    2. TL Beaton
    3. Dear June, I'm a little late at sorting through all our e-mail but your message of Feb 4th caught my eye again. We also have roots with Alexander MANSON and Ephie MCKAY. My husband, Tom, is descended from Jennet MANSON, b Oct 22, 1817, m George MCKAY Jan 27, 1837. One of their children was Hugh MCKAY, b Aug 1844, married Margaret MCLEOD and down. It is amazing at how often the MCKAYs and MANSONs married. Our family settled in Huron County, Ontario. I have not had much success developing the interest of our family in their MCKAY/MANSON roots! Best regards, Lois Beaton

    1. [SUT] Highlander designations
    2. George A Murray
    3. I am from the state of Montana in the USA..... What significance is the word 'tribe' vs 'clan' in the Highlands? Here is footnote from the Statistical on Sutherlandshire: About the year 1567 George Earl of Caithness, who claimed wardship of Alexander Earl of Sutherland then a minor, had got the person of the later into his possession. A tribe of Murrays, inhabiting this part of the country, who were firmly attached to the noble family and beheld the conduct of Caithness with a jealous eye, contrived to get the minor conveyed from Caithness and put under the protection of the Earl of Huntly. Caithness in revenge invaded this country, by his son John, who, invested the town and Castle of Dornoch, of which the Murrays had possessed themselves. Several skirmishes took place with various sucesses. The Murrays no longer able to maintain the ground they had occupied, retired to the castle. Upon this, the master of Caithness burnt the town and cathedral; but still the besieged defended themselves in the castle for month longer. At length, however, they were obliged to capitulate, having undertaken to depart out of Sutherland within two months, and delivered three hostages into the hands of the conquerors. The Murrays fulfilled their engagement; yet the a hostages were treacherously murdered. George Alexander MURRAY III Kalispell, Montana USA

    2. George A Murray
    3. hope this isn't a duplicate - I have a distant male MURRAY......perhaps Alexander of Sutherlandshire, but I heard this story many years ago. Just prior to 1938, my father George Alexander MURRAY II (1906-1965)gave railroad fare to his father George Alexander MURRAY (1861-1938) to 'see the pipes for one last time'. The 'pipes' were in the custody of grandfather's brother Gilbert MURRAY (1864-x), in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. They were two sons of Robert P MURRAY (1821-1896) of Suthlandshire and Annie nee Matheson MURRAY (1835-1886) of West Zorra Township, Ontario, Canada. All seven children were born in Zorra Township. These bag pipes were an honorary presentation from a high English noble (king?) to a g? g grandfather who was a 'Piper Major in the Gordon Highlanders'. I hate to gilt this story TOO much, but I was told they were 'gold plated'. Does any part of this story make sense? George Alexander MURRAY ||| Kalispell, Montana, USA 59903-2176
