    2. Am I not correct in saying that many people are buried in graveyards in un-marked graves, as they were too poor to afford headstones? I have a number of ancestors who were marked as 'paupers' in their death certs. in Stoer/Assynt. Interestingly, this was particularly noted in certs. around 1900. Was there a particular local economic 'slump' at that time, or was there a growing awareness of how poor the crofters were, thereby having it highlighted on the certs.? edward Limpsfield, Surrey

    2. Pam Thomson
    3. Dear Listers I am trying to establish where the Rev Andrew Murray's father, Rev Andrew Murray senior was born and if he is in fact related to my line of Murray's. I do not have a year of birth but would put it circa 1800 - he died in Wellington SA, in 1866. For the last 40 odd years, my Mother has been adamant that he is, however, I have the feeling that he is from another family of Murray's, possibly from Aberdeen. Murray, Andrew (1828-1917) Dutch Reformed minister in South Africa; born in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa; studied in Aberdeen, master's degree (1845); to Utrect U. to study theology and formed Students' Missionary Society; served in Bloemfontein, South Africa (1850-60), Worcester (1860-64), Cape Town (1864-71), Wellington (1871-1906); moderator of Dutch Reformed Council; founded Huguenot Seminary (1874); established missionary training school (1877); father of South African Keswick (1889); greatly influenced by William Law; evangelistic meetings in United States, Canada, England, Iceland, Scotland, Holland, South Africa; writings: Spirit of Christ, Abide in Christ, Like Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, and many others. Any clues will be greatly appreciated. I rather be spending time looking for family that are mine. Pam

    3. Hello Christine, My story has far too many gaps in it yet for inclusion in the book! Some basic stuff missing - like where Ewan MCMILLAN came from before he turned up in Sutherland and fathered two children and married one of the mothers. And I still don't know on which ship John came to Australia. BUT these little things will fall into place eventually. With the wonderful help from the list, I have Ewan's occupation of foxhunter. CIVIL HISTORY (page 140) to Sir Robert Gordon's History of the Earls of Sutherland. The Rev states it 'the most authentic, of the general correctness of that remarkable local history,'. The feud between the Keith and the Gun clans is indexed page 142. The footnote at the bottom of the page attests to the Rev's thoroughness. 'The history of the clan during these early centuries, as collected from tradition, and partly borne out by detached narratives in Sir Robert Gordon' history, is replete with incidents, which, in the present age, have more of the character of wild romance than of reality, and exhibits, in many startling details, the ferocity and implacable fury which distinguished the feuds of the clans in the remote Highlands, * even down to near the close of the seventeenth century.' *Sir Robert Gordon, whose history was written in 1630, thus alludes to "the inveterat deldlie feud betuein the clan Gun and the Slaight-can-Aberigh," (a branch of the Mackays). He remarks: "The long, the many, the horrible encounters which happened between the two trybes, with the bloodshed and infinit spolls committed in every pairt of the diocy of Catteynes by them and their associats, are of so disordered and troublesome memorie," that he passes them over.---P.174. 3. Hello all, Speaking as an anthropologist, tribes are more often used by our North American first nations people. The term, as with any, can have a negative connotation. The first usage may have been THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL. The Latin is Tribus. Clan, I believe is more of an English variation for words that imply direct relationship to the head of the families with the same name.
