Hello all, Today I viewed the reel for Rogart at our local LDS centre. Is it possible that the records for this era (Late 1700's- middle 1800's) were rewritten, years ago? The reason I ask is that there was a set of records, fairly well kept, and then a second on what appeared to be on smaller paper that were quite poorly done and water damaged, with the same information. The records, of certain family members, started in 1795. There is a record of a William born to James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell, residing at Craggy Strath Brora(I believe this is the place) on April 8, 1795. The second record is for Duncan born to James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell, Dalreavoch, on February 26, 1797. Some questions then came to mind. Would it be reasonable to assume that this was the same couple(James and Katherine) living at different locations? How far apart are these locations? I know there was a daughter, but alas, there is no record for her. She was supposed to have emigrated with Duncan and their mother, Katherine, to Pictou County, Nova Scotia in 1831. I have no information for William. Can anyone shed some light on this? I too would love to hear what others do as I still feel "so green" at my knowledge collection and storage. Must have a better look at Legacy - maybe I am missing something ! When I see names even remotely interesting now I am saving - just incase it becomes a lead at some later stage. I have created an Excel spreadsheet for this purpose and find it makes things easier when doing a search. Pam >>> <Epaxton@aol.com> 04/15/03 02:12pm >>> As I build up my records and data, I'm looking for advice/comment as to how others store theirs. I presently use the freeware from Ancestry.com and Legacy to keep my 'tree' up to date, but how does that compare with other systems? Does anyone have Family Tree or other systems? Is it good or better than the freeware? I've recently managed to obtain lots of family pics from cousins, so I eventually want to have some stored with my tree. Any views on that? I heartily recommend Legacy. It is one of the best, maybe even the best, programme available. I have tried many, Family Tree maker, generations etc., but this is the best. You can download free the basic programme at www.legacy.com There are upgrades available and well worth the small amount of money they cost. Edward can even save his photographs in Legacy and everything is there in the correct place. I even scanned in copies of birth certificates, etc. Regarding those who are not on your tree - this is more difficult - some people use Excel spreadsheets etc. I use my own method laid out in Microsoft Word. It is easy to update and can be read by most computers. Hope this helps. Will be interesting to see what others use. Malcolm What a wonderful piece of information on Alexander Bannerman. As you can see below he did not emigrate after all. From a poor man he seems to have completed his life in a much better state. Sheila Mackay, Edinburgh, has this family on her own tree. She will be thrilled with this new information especially the link to Inchcape which is where her immediate family were. ALEXANDER BANNERMAN [c1820-9/8/1912] married SARAH GUNN [21/11/1825-13/9/1904] Alexander was born circa 1820 in Loth or Kildonan to John Bannerman crofter and Catherine Sutherland. Sarah was born at Fourpenny, Dornoch in 1825 daughter of Gilbert Gunn, mason and Helen Gray. Alexander and Sarah married at Pitfure, Rogart on 11 February 1848. They had the following children all born at West Helmsdale, Kildonan, except the youngest two who were born at East Langwell, Rogart: JOHN born circa 1849 [died 28 August 1928 Meigle Perthshire] [married firstly to Elizabeth Mollison and secondly to Jemima Meiklejohn]; GILBERT born 1851 [died May 1927 Wisconsin USA] [married Mary Julia Parrent]; WILLIAM born circa 1852 [died 29 April 1911 Glasgow] [married firstly to Mary Ann Mollison and secondly to Margaret Ferguson Hucheson]; CATHERINE born circa 1854 [died 31 March 1907 Blairmore Rogart] [married William Mackenzie]; ROBERT born 11 March 1856 [died 10 October 1936 Glasgow] [married Rachel Morrison]; DONALD born 12 February 1858; GEORGE GUNN born 18 December 1859 [died 21 February 1919 Hawick] [married Mary McBurnie Greenwood]; DAVID born 29 October 1861; HELEN GRAY born 6 September 1864 [died 26 August 1940 Bonar Bridge - a nurse and single]; ALEXANDER born 15 October 1866 [died 27 October 1945 Tain] [married Christina Margaret Ross]; CHRISTINA born 12 December 1868] [died 27 September 1881 Rogart] and THOMAS GUNN born 29 January 1872] [died 12 December 1935 Dundee] [married Jessie Ann Henderson]. In the 1851 census at West Helmsdale Alexander, shown as a crofter, and Sarah were at home with their children John and Gilbert. A Sarah Mackenzie, age 18, born in Rogart was their general servant and they had a nurse aged 12 years, Margaret Polson of Kildonan. In 1861 still in West Helmsdale Alexander was shown as a lotter of three acres. John and Gilbert were with him and Sarah plus Catherine, Donald and George. They now had a Margaret Sutherland of Kildonan as a domestic servant. The house had two rooms with windows. By 1871 the family were at East Langwell, Rogart having gone there in 1867, where Alexander was a crofter of 22 acres, ten of which were arable. He and Sarah had William, Catherine, Donald, George, David, Helen, Alexnader and Christina at home. This new house had four rooms with windows. Still at East Langwell in 1881 Alexander's holding had increased to fourteen acres arable and he was now shown as a farmer. With him and Sarah were their children Robert, Ellen, Alexander, Christina and Thomas. They had a visitor from Glasgow, a Walter Gunn aged 4 years. The house had grown to seven rooms with windows. In both the 1891 and 1901 census records at East Langwell Alexander was not at home. His wife Sarah was and in 1891 her son Alexander was with her and in 1901 her daughter Helen, son Alexander with his wife Christina and their children were with her. Around 1904 the family left East Langwell and returned to the Brora area. Alexander died in 1912. The 'Northern Times' printed an obituary which read: "It was with extreme regret we have to record the death under tragic circumstances of Mr Alexander Bannerman J.P., Clynemilton, Brora. Mr Bannerman was out for his usual walk on Friday morning last and made several calls on his way home, and while on the highway at the foot of his own farm, and walking along, was overtaken and run over by the foremost of two cars from Clynelish on their way to John O'Groats. Mr Bannerman was caught by the mudguard and knocked down, receiving fatal injuries, his hat was found on one side of the road and his staff on the other. When aid waas rendered it was found that life was extinct, and it is presumed that death was instantaneous. The deceased had reached the patriarchal age of ninety two years. Mr Bannerman was a native of Helmsdale and went to Langwell, Rogart, in 1867. During his residence in Rogart the deceased took a very prominent part in the land agitation in that district and throughout the county. He was familiar and popular at all political meetings and he always attended the Highland Land League Conference as delegate for the Parish of Rogart. After the passing of the Education Act of 1872 Mr Bannerman was elected to the School Board of Rogart of which he was Chairman until he left for Brora eight years ago. He was repeatedly elected to the Parochial Board and was a member of the Parish Council. He was for many years President of the Liberal Association and for a considerable period Vice President of the County Liberal Association. The funeral of Mr Bannerman took place on Monday. There was a large turnout of farmers and crofters..... a funeral service was conducted at his house . . . the coffin was carried to Brora Railway Station and conveyed by the 11 o'clock train to Rogart where a very large number of parishioners were awating to convey the remains to the churchyard at Rogart, the burial place of the family." I use Family Tree Maker version 10 & love it. It is totally user friendly & has space for 15 pictures for each person. You can put in photos of the person or any scanned image (i.e. marriage certificates, pages from books etc). It is very easy to crop pictures if you just want to include one person from a group shot. You can print out trees with a picture of each individual, do a slideshow of pictures, etc. I started with version 3 many years ago after using PAF & find Family Tree Maker just keeps getting better with each new version. I just started out a friend who wants to start genealogy with Family Tree Maker & she had no experience at all & loves it & has her little tree full of pictures & notes already. Here is some information on this family. ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND [born 2/1756] married MARION MACKAY [died 22/7/1830] There is an entry for a marriage between Marion and Alexander on 29 December 1785 at Dornoch (IGI). However, as this is after the date of the first children's births I wonder if there is an error here. Maron or Marion died at Birichen, Dornoch, on 22 July 1830. This death is shown on the Old Parish Register and names her as Maron, wife of Alexander Sutherland. (editor's note: some of these children appear born too close together - we must assume that these are either baptism dates or there were two couples in Dornoch with the same names). Marion and Alexander had the following children born or christened in Dornoch (SCR/OPR): James SUTHERLAND, born 13 January 1782; David SUTHERLAND, born 16 December 1785; James SUTHERLAND, born 21 November 1790; John SUTHERLAND born 11 April 1791; Margaret SUTHERLAND, born 19 February 1793; James SUTHERLAND, born 24 May 1795; John SUTHERLAND, born 26 July 1795; Helen SUTHERLAND, born 16 June 1804 [married Donald Munro] Kenneth SUTHERLAND, born 29 January 1809. DONALD MUNRO married HELEN SUTHERLAND Donald was born in Dornoch son of Angus Munro and Christian Graham. Helen Sutherland was born in Dornoch daughter of Alexander Sutherland and Marion Mackay. She and Donald married in Dornoch on 17 January 1826. Donald and Helen had five children, two daughters born in Golspie, then a daughter and son born in Clyne and another son born at Lochiver. Donald and his family all emigrated to Australia in 1837. A member of this list in Queensland has further information on this family. I will send you her email address privately. On the subject of books, I got an interesting book about Patrick Sellar in the Dornoch book shop last summer. It was written by his g-granddaughter(?) in an effort to shed a better light on him. I am sorry I cannot remember the author's name - perhaps someone else knows the book. I left it with a friend in Sutherland and cannot make the reference. The thing that impressed me most was the extraordinary speed with which he travelled from Morayshire up to Loch Fleet and back - going most of the way on foot. Elspeth

I also bought the Trial of Patrick Sellar by Ian Grimble expecting it to be about the trial but interesting nonetheless. Another view on an old subject well written. I find the Statistical Accounts fascinating. I did a comparison on Rogart between all three Statistical Accounts and found little real basic change but a fascinating insight into how three different writers viewed the parish. I am always interested in books about the Highlands and have recently bought "The Trial Of Patrick Sellar by Ian Grimble" this is an excellent book perhaps miscalled as I expected a book about his Trial which it is not but I would still recommend it . Another buy has been " The Third Statistical Account Of Sutherland " done in 1988 yet to be read. Iain, I'm currently reading "From Rebel To Hero, The Image of the Highlander 1745-1830" by Robert Clyde, 1995, Tuckwell Press Ltd. and I've recently completed: "Highland Clans & Tartans" by R.W. Munro, 1977, Crescent Books Ltd. and "James IV A Renaissance King" by Ruth Blackie, Graham Donaldson & Douglas McKenzie, 1996. I've enjoyed each of these so far, so maybe you would also? However there are still some gaps. William was born about 1852. He married Ann Allan (sic) on 23 June 1876 in Leith, Edinburgh where they were both working. I managed to view their marriage entry. They were both born in Sutherland according to the marriage entry and the census schedules for 1881, 1891 and 1901. William and Ann came back to live with his parents at Marrel and later owned the croft after Flora's death. The eldest two of their children were born in Edinburgh. According to her marriage entry, Ann was the daughter of Sinclair Allan and Mina Bannerman. Sinclair is described as a mason. They were married in Loth Parish, Sutherland on 16 July 1847. Mina may well be short for Williamina. William and Ann's eldest daughter was known as Minnie. Does anyone recognise this family? Did Ann have siblings? Hope someone can help. My great-grandfather John ROSS was born at Durness and christened there in 1844. In the 1851 Census he was living with his parents Alexander ROSS and Barbara CAMPBELL at Sangomore. After a lifetime as a police constable in Leith, he returned to Durness, died at Sangomore in 1918, and is buried (I think) in the Balnakiel cemetery. Is there any way of finding out: 1) just where in Durness he was born 2) just where in Sangomore the family was living in 1851, and 3) just where in Durness he spent his retirement years? Or is it a case of the town's name being all the detail available? Finally, how can I verify that he is buried in Balnakiel cemetery, and how can I locate the position of his grave, if there is no headstone? I sense that my questions demonstrate a considerable lack of understanding about the whole situation, so please bear with me! John Ross Albury NSW Australia
