    3. I also use Family Tree Maker and like it but ....... would love to know how to get this programme ( and others)to organize and print the data in direct descendant format. Organising by generations is confusing. Data based programmes should be able to sort the information in various formats. Is there a programme that sorts the data by direct descendants? Any suggestions? 3. I agree, back up frequently, and be careful of transferring data. I bought a new pc, and was trying to copy all my data from Family Tree Maker onto a zip drive, and in the transfer all was lost. Over 1,500 people...gone. I could have cried. This was last week. I use Excel to create pedigree and family charts, but my husband created Family Group Data Sheets in Dreamweaver, and we store everything there. You can see an example of it at www.familypangea.net (needs updating, very seriously, but it takes so much time) Luckily, I copied a good deal of the data from Family Tree Maker onto the website, so I actually kept about 30% of the information. The only problem with this method of storing records is that it isn't compatible with other's software, so it can't be imported. But it looks so much nicer on a website than just plain text! 3. I have a couple of software programs, but none of them display all of the information that I want to see. I can put an individual in and get a list of direct ancestors, or I can put an individual in and get a list of direct descendants, but I am unable to see the whole tree all at once. Its just a small point but its annoying when I know my tree is so much bigger than it looks! Does anyone know of a program where you can see the whole tree (ie : all the brothers and sisters of ancestors and descendants)? Claire Atkinson in gloriously sunny Somerset, England.

    2. L Sutherland
    3. Hello all, I posted this message before. By now I thought there would be a response. Maybe not all got it. So here goes again. Today I viewed the reel for Rogart at our local LDS centre. Is it possible that the records for this era (Late 1700's- middle 1800's) were rewritten, years ago? The reason I ask is that there was a set of records, fairly well kept, and then a second on what appeared to be on smaller paper that were quite poorly done and water damaged, with the same information. The records, of certain family members, started in 1795. There is a record of a William born to James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell, residing at Craggy Strath Brora(I believe this is the place) on April 8, 1795. The second record is for Duncan born to James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell, Dalreavoch, on February 26, 1797. Some questions then came to mind. Would it be reasonable to assume that this was the same couple(James and Katherine) living at different locations? How far apart are these locations? I know there was a daughter, but alas, there is no record for her. She was supposed to have emigrated with Duncan and their mother, Katherine, to Pictou County, Nova Scotia in 1831. I have no information for William. Can anyone shed some light on this? Donald Lee Sutherland, Hamilton, Ontario _________________________________________________________________

It is nice to have all the siblings of the ancestors showing. Bit difficult to see everyone or to print it out for large trees though. 3. I have decided to have a go at doing a story. Helped this week by finding John McMILLAN's missing Irish wife. She remarried two years after his death. She had no more children (to anyone) after the death of Flora McKay - her second daughter, aged 1 year. Apart from Flora McKay the 2nd, who was already on the way. Being before civil reg. here in Victoria, I'm hoping to find a newspaper report for a clue as to death. Sometime after this, 1851, and 1862 (when John actually had his illigitimate child registered as a child of his marriage!) they became estranged. John had another "spouse" on his death certificate and the extra kid. He was named Gillespie Rankin McMILLAN, but brought up as Oscar. Luckily, on his mother's death certificate he is listed as "Rankin". Who cares why! it made our day! proof that the two were the one person. (There was a Gillespie RANKIN christened in Durness around the same time a John) Needless to say, this was a bit of a shock to the descendant's of Oscar McMILLAN - explains why they hadn't found a birth certificate. But, every time you find a bit of the jigsaw, it certainly creates a whole new set of questions. Thanks for your encouragement..... I'll pop off to the archives, as I'm pretty sure you did post a suggested guideline to size, etc some time back. 3. Hi all I use FTM 10 and find it is a good program. I have some cd's of theirs so find that it is important to have the program as they are some very good cd's. We have had a strange week here in Sarnia, Ontario, yesterday the city was put under containment, as the chemical valley had lost its hydro and had released some dangerous chemicals into the air, the wind was coming directly toward the city so as a result the entire city was pretty much shut down with everyone locking windows and shutting down furnaces etc....even the city buses quit running. Apparently it was some sort of chemical that takes oxygen out of the air......or at least one of the releases, heavens knows what else was released.........lol, we will probably never be told. The containment last maybe about 5 hours.......at which time they told us it was ok to go back outside. I personally have never had anything quite like that happen to me before. Well back to family tree programs, I have tried a couple of others, generations....and one other cant recall the name of it and they all seem really good and have their own personalities......I stick with FTM mostly because of the other cd's I have, the only thing I find is that if you have someone else that wants to send you a file of FTM it wont load unless you have at least the version they have, if you try to load a lower version into a higher one it will not work. I guess that is their way of forcing you to buy the next version of their software Cathy Wagner Sarnia, Ontario
