Hello All! These two people, among others, can be found in the book "Eldon Connections" by Rae B. Fleming as I had mentioned in an earlier post. Here is some of the juicy parts.... This is the Donald GRANT b.1777 husband of Catherine MACKAY mentioned in the information that I had provided you, Christine. Donald and Catherine GRANT emigrated with their six children in 1831. Their daughter Christine GRANT married John GUNN b.1829, brother of Rev, Robert F. GUNN. Their parents, Donald and Flora GUNN who came with their sons to Ontario in 1830, also had a daughter Elizabeth born in Ontario. The father was said to have been a minister in Scotland who had been shamed supposedly because of an affair(with Flora?) and had lost his ministry. In Canada, the father had to be persuaded to preach at McMurchy's Church. As there was no one to lead the congregation at that time and Robert was rather eloquent, he took over the duties though he was not himself ordained. 'Rev.'GUNN lead the congregtion for years. The book can be found at the library here in Victoria County. I will gladly check it out again for anyone who requests. Regards from warm and sunny(whew!) After tracing my ancestors back to the mid-1700's (James Sutherland, b 1749 Wick and Margaret Forbes, b abt 1755 Latheron), and getting a bit stuck there, I've been trying to locate living relatives. I've found 5 so far, which is very exciting. Ironically, my biggest difficulty so far is finding out where some of my closest relatives have gone, namely my grandfathers siblings. Maybe YOU can help? Due to lack of census and death records, I believe they may have emigrated from the Edinburgh area to the Nova Scotia area, sometime between 1890-1920. Here is their info: The parents were William Sutherland, b 1846 and Amelia Bain, b 1850. They stayed in Edinburgh. Their children, whose records I'm searching for, were: James, b abt 1870; Robert, b abt 1872; John, b abt 1879; William, b 1884 (my grandfather); Daniel, b 1886; Margaret (aka Peggy), b 1892 (she was an actress in New York, stage name: Gertrude Roye) and Isabella, b 1882. When my grandfather emigrated to Canada, he was o! nly about 14-16 years old. I thought that quite strange, that is until I realized that he most likely came over and met up with older siblings (or came over with them?). If anyone can help me find some emigration records for any of these individuals, that would be greatly appreciated. Robert Sutherland Seattle, Washington, USA
Pat - in Winnipeg In your letter of enquiry 9 April you mentioned that you had Volumes 1,2 and 3 of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before 1867. I assume that the list includes all Canadian ports of entry. Would it be too much of an imposition to ask for a "look-up" of two names? I have reached a blank wall in searching Nova Scotia entries. Thanks for any help you can give. Donald - in BC
I wondered if SKS who had access to 1841 Census for Durness would mind checking an entry for me? I am interested in the household of Barbara SCOBIE of Keoldale aged abt 66. Many thanks Judy Wonderful clear mild morning here near Toowoomba! Happy Easter to all!
That's me Pam, although I didn't know I had said anything about it to the Sutherland list!! Thanks for thinking of me, though in this case it is actually my transcription of the log and the muster roll of the Weymouth that appears on the Ships List. Actually if your ancestors emigrated around 1820 it might be of interest to view the log even if your ancestors went to USA or Australia, as it gives you an idea of how long it took and what they had to eat etc. I'm lucky to have been able to go to the PRO and study the actual log of the ship my 3 x great grandfather Philip Hobbs (not from Sutherland) emigrated on - a rare treat. I know the journey can't have been a rare treat for Charity Hobbs as she embarked on the voyage while pregnant and with two small children, lost one child on board to a measles epidemic and then gave birth to a daughter at sea who lived for only three weeks. Can some please explain the exact connections of Ascolbeg , Brora , & Clyne. I know Clyne is relative to the location of the church . When I put my family information such as that of Donald S. Grant , do I put Clyne ,Sutherland ,Scotland ? Strath Brora , ???????// Ascolbeg? The geographics are kind of confusing . If there are past messages posted in regards to this I would be happy to refer to them. Thanks for help. Andrea

I am wondering if this is because they were (a) very young at the time of his (Donald) birth or (b) lost children in between ? I have used the database (IGI) through the SRO website : http://www.scotsorigins.com/igi-search.aspx I tried finding also marriage date & in search of parents of Janet and of John and would like to take this back further . Hi all I was surfing at a site that is a cost at the LDS last nite and of course there is no point in sending the url out as it costs money to view it. However the LDS centre gets it for free so I took down the info and thought I would send it I am thinking of taking a bit of a break, so much is happening, it will be odd to not be on list but I have company coming and also a preggie dog, grandchild having surgery, me having the rest of them at night for a while. so Christine if you could unsubscribe me I would appreciate it as my info stuff is also on my reg computer which is still not up and running, (just another snag in life) MARIPOSA TOWNSHIP , ONTARIO , PIONEERS GRANT, Donald, farmer, grain dealer, and stock breeder. Thank you Christine, Your response cleared a couple of mysteries. Would it be reasonable to assume that during any period, not all records were kept? Duncan's brother or cousin, John was supposed to have been younger, yet I have never found a record for him until his marriage to Janet Murray in the Dornoch area. Second point, might a record of marriage have been recorded in two parishes, one for the groom, the other for the bride? This arises from the entries of marriage for John Sutherland and Janet Murray, on or about the date of April 24/25, 1829. He was John Sutherland Lothbeg, she Janet Murray,Berichan, Dornoch. This entry is from the reel including Loth records. There are also entries for Kildonan and Dornoch for the same day. This is the only John Sutherland/Janet Murray record for Sutherland in a 40 year period! Dalreavoch and Craggy are situated very close to each other in Rogart parish near to Strath Brora. James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell are the only couple of those names shown on the Rogart register at this time. A thought - frequently the wife went home to her mother to give birth to her first child. Perhaps this is the case here? Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com email rhemusaig@tiscali.co.uk -----Original Message----- From: L Sutherland [mailto:lsuth27@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2003 1:49 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SUT]Rogart Records Again Hello all, I posted this message before. By now I thought there would be a response. Maybe not all got it. So here goes again. Today I viewed the reel for Rogart at our local LDS centre. Is it possible that the records for this era (Late 1700's- middle 1800's) were rewritten, years ago? The reason I ask is that there was a set of records, fairly well kept, and then a second on what appeared to be on smaller paper that were quite poorly done and water damaged, with the same information. The records, of certain family members, started in 1795. There is a record of a William born to James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell, residing at Craggy Strath Brora(I believe this is the place) on April 8, 1795. The second record is for Duncan born to James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell, Dalreavoch, on February 26, 1797. Some questions then came to mind. Would it be reasonable to assume that this was the same couple(James and Katherine) living at different locations? How far apart are these locations? I know there was a daughter, but alas, there is no record for her. She was supposed to have emigrated with Duncan and their mother, Katherine, to Pictou County, Nova Scotia in 1831. I have no information for William. Can anyone shed some light on this?
