The following has been posted to the Ayr, Bute and Argyll lists, and I recollect a few people on this list may have interests with East Lothian. Courtesy of course of the original message sender: The list of completed transcriptions on-line for the East Lothian 1841 Census with their addresses is shown in the signature block on this email. They can also be reached via links on our home page. Please note these transcriptions have been checked and validated but may still contain errors and researchers are advised to check the original film if in doubt. The transcriptions are provided on this temporary site by courtesy of Rootsweb as a service to researchers and will be moved to a permanent site when our main project is completed. In his testament (following his death in Nov 1843 in Dingwall), Alexander MACKENZIE is described as Sheriff substitute for the Western District of the shire of Ross. Can anyone explain what this would entail? What sort of tenure would the position have? Many thanks Judy Qld
Hello Listers, Does anyone on the list have ready access to an 1851 census? I have found a "stray" Mary MCMILLAN age 36, born Durness, Sutherland enumerated in Ardrossan, Ayrshire. [posted in McMillan archives, 2001] She is about the right age to be the illigitimate daughter of my Ewan [or Evander] MCMILLAN, who remained single. If possible, could someone look up to see if she was in Sutherland in 1851? In 1881 & 1891 she was at 25 Durine, Census Place: Durness This COULD be an important clue to Ewan's origins! When we were there last year we found that many of the Public Libraries - certainly in the main centres ( Inverness etc) had E-mail facilities and that there were also Internet Cafes scattered around the various towns. An inquiry usually lead you to one but, be careful, some of them are in bars and THEY are quite expensive to use. The only problem I did find in one place was that they would not allow you the use of the facility unless you were a member of the library. York, for instance also had this proviso, but also allowed you to take out temporary membership for the cost of five pounds which was refunded at the end of the specified time. Others libraries need to adopt this method for the international traveller, too. Hope this helps, Herbert. ----- Original Message ----- From: <FraserMacK@aol.com> To: <SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 25, 2003 8:53 PM Subject: Re: [SUT] going home---off topic > Lochinver also has an Internet cafe sans cafe. A good comparison of various packages is provided at the Reunion page. See . . . http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/Comparisons.html This site compares the Reunion package with each of the 4 most widely known PC genealogy progrsms. Unfortunately for most people, Reunion stopped being developed for both PC and MacIntosh about 4 levels ago. Fortunately, I have always been a Mac user. Still these are pretty useful comparisons. --- Ray
As there appears to be no children during the period 1790 and early 1800s it does seem to me that this couple were not in Sutherland. Possibly Donald was in the army or they went south returning later. John Grant or Wright was in fact a John Grant who was a Millwright. The Wright is his occupation. This can be confusing. I am wondering if this is because they were (a) very young at the time of his (Donald) birth or (b) lost children in between ? Hi everyone Returned from Easter break which gave us a few days in the beautiful countryside of SUNNY England. Quite an unusual event but the weather here in Britain has been really nice. Hope it continues! To answer Andrea's query - Clyne is the parish, Ascoilbeg, Brora etc are in the parish. Correct address is Brora, Clyne or Ascoilbeg, Clyne etc. Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com email rhemusaig@tiscali.co.uk -----Original Message----- From: Andrea [mailto:agatha63@netzero.net] Sent: Saturday, April 19, 2003 5:36 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SUT] Clyne, Brora , Ascolbeg? Hi Shane, After temps in Cairo, I expect you will need a coat anywhere in the UK, not just in the Highlands! Temperatures in East Sutherland have been up around the high teens C for the last few weeks, so we all in shirtsleeves here. I went to the beach today in just a tee shirt today - I thought it was lovely and warm. You should have no problem finding internet access up here. Even Embo has (its own form of) an internet cafe - just without the cafe - it's in the shop I think. Which way will you be 'gazing' over the Dornoch Firth? I think the best view is from the north side - that way you KNOW you are in Sutherland, boundary changes not withstanding. Give me a shout if you actually get up this far. Denise Sutherland
Giving the list a rest for a while. Returning to Uk until July, so don't know if I'll have access to a computer regularly. Not sure if I can find net cafes in the Highlands. Continue with the interesting messages. I'll check archives when I get chance. Hope I'll get a chance to get up to Helmsdale.... but at least I can gaze across the Dornoch Firth. Shane in Cairo where it's getting hot. Will I need my coat? __________________________________________________ Yahoo! Plus For a better Internet experience http://www.yahoo.co.uk/btoffer

Our local Family History Soc is having a discussion day shortly on record storage. Sorry to raise the (off) topic again but does anyone know of a web site with comparisons of the various software programmes ...preferably a checklist? We are going to take laptops along with displays of our families on software that we have, but I am sure their are other programmes that we will miss. Thankyou Judy Qld
