    1. Re: [SUT] Pre-clearance village - Blaid
    2. Tom Thanks very much. That is very helpful. Copies of the extracts would be very welcome as I hope to visit the area again next week. I will be looking at the area round the now abandoned 'modern' house with great interest. For the record, my geat great grandfather and mother (Kerr and Janet Armstrong) lived at Mussel (now part of a cowshed!), my GG grandfather and mother (William Grant and Mary Armstrong) married there and my grandfather (Donald) was born there. My GGF/M then moved up to the shepherd's house at the modern Allnabad (now roofless and abandoned except by sheep) which stands on or close to the site you describe. A daughter (Janet) was born there before the family moved to Freisgill south of Whiten Head. Details at http://members.aol.com/donjgrant. I am currently reading 'The Highland Clearances' by John Prebble and he writes about Thomas Gillespie, a lowlander grazier who came to Glengarry in 1872. Does anybody on the list have any further information the Thomas Gillespie John Prebble was writing about? I am trying to establish whether there is any connection with my gg grandfather Thomas Gillespie who was born in Farr on 20 Apr 1818. His parents were apparently George Gillespie and Sarah McLean. He was living in Halkirk Caithness in 1839 when he married Elizabeth Laing who, was born in Roxburgh and whose parents were supposed to have brought sheep from Roxburgh to Caithness. Also all my Gillespie relations who immigrated to New Zealand appear to have worked with sheep here in New Zealand, either as shepherds, shearers or sheep farm managers. To add to my curiosity on this subject I have poems written by by my g grandfather's brother in which he writes nostalgically about Strathnaver and the McKays. I would appreciate any help anybody on the list could give on this query. 3. Don, Don't have any information on the village but I do have it on a couple of map sections that I downloaded (I think from the Charting the Nation website) South from Loch Hope is the village of Mussel. South again is the Dun Dornadilla or Dun Dornigill. Continuing south the road shows a fork going westward into Glen Golly and ends at a shooting Lodge. Blaid is on this small fork. None of this is on the modern map, but I would think it is not far south of Altnacaillich in Strathmore. Let me know if you would like a copy of the map sent off list. My interest in Blaid is that my GG G-Father Donald McKay's (b abt. 1798) family seem to have come from this area. He was later evicted or cleared to Strath Melness. 3. Nice to see that work continues as we all hoped it would at Clyne Kirkton. The graveyard looked a lot different in September last than in March last year when I joined the clean up crew ! Mention of the beautiful flowers reminds me of the fantastic sight of thousands of snowdrops in and around the inside of the old Church this inspired me to make a discovery in September. We met the late Willie Gunn ( only just over a week before his untimely death) at Clyne Kirkton and had a good look round I had resolved to plant some snowdrops over the grave of my 2 time Great Grandfather Neil Macbeath as it looked lonely without but in doing so we found a cover stone over the grave covered with thin turf which is probably why know snowdrops grew ! funny how small things lead to discoveries! any way we put some snowdrops round the edge and I hope to see them grow on. Many people may wonder why my c.d. of "Memorabilia Domestica" is dedicated to Willie Gunn this is because of our discussion that day when he was so keen to POSH have this on c.d. I personally felt it a great honour to dedicate this to him. 3. Hi everyone Please forgive me if some of these answers seem old - I am trying to catch up on a huge batch of emails. The dreaded work has taken all my time during the past month but hopefully things will now calm down. Donald - regarding records - there are periods when no records exist. I always work on the assumption that most folks will turn up sometime - if not at birth then census, marriage, death. When two people from different parishes married the Banns were normally called in both parishes not always on the same day. This is what the IGI show - Banns and not the actual marriage. However it is fair to say that 99.9% of Banns called ended in a marriage. The OPRs generally show the actual marriage. Christine -----Original Message----- From: L Sutherland [mailto:lsuth27@hotmail.com] Sent: Friday, April 18, 2003 2:36 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [SUT]Rogart Records Again Thank you Christine, Your response cleared a couple of mysteries. Would it be reasonable to assume that during any period, not all records were kept? Duncan's brother or cousin, John was supposed to have been younger, yet I have never found a record for him until his marriage to Janet Murray in the Dornoch area. Second point, might a record of marriage have been recorded in two parishes, one for the groom, the other for the bride? This arises from the entries of marriage for John Sutherland and Janet Murray, on or about the date of April 24/25, 1829. He was John Sutherland Lothbeg, she Janet Murray,Berichan, Dornoch. This entry is from the reel including Loth records. There are also entries for Kildonan and Dornoch for the same day. This is the only John Sutherland/Janet Murray record for Sutherland in a 40 year period! 1. [SUT] GUNN IN EAST CLYNE
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. A descendant in New Zealand has written to ask which hotel in East Clyne would the Hugh Gunn shown below have been the keeper of. Can anyone help? If anyone relates to this family or can add any information please get in touch and I will supply email address of researcher. JOHN GUNN married ISABELLA GORDON [8/5/1824-14/1/1900] [11/8/1825-13/4/1917] Isabella (Bell) was born in Rogart, daughter of Donald Gordon and Janet Mackay – see Gordon Families GN167. She and John married on 6 or 7 May 1847. Banns were called in both Rogart and Clyne (SCR). John was born in Clyne, son of William Gunn and Anne Melville (IGI). The 1881 census shows John Gunn, a crofter in East Clyne, with his wife, Isabella, sons George and Hugh, who were both domestic builders, daughters Annabella, a dressmaker and Sarah who attended school. James Grant, who later the same year married Annabella, was living with the family as a visitor. He was a Mercantile Clerk. John and Isabella had a number of children including: Hugh, born 24 June 1853 [died 9 May 1934 East Clyne, hotel keeper]. Many thanks Christine --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Great to read that their work is lighter this year following the mega clear up last year. The enclosure which contains Gabriel Reed's stone certainly did need attention. I wish you could all see the carpet of spring flowers which cover the ground at this time of year. Ron Patrick's gates certainly deserve recognition - a long way to come to paint some gates. We still need lots of help to carry on the work of POSH. We need donations to allow our work to go forward. Next month we are having a meeting with Rogart Heritage Society to discuss ways in which POSH can help with the large number of stones which have fallen and broken in St Callan's. We will also be looking at burial grounds in Assynt and Durness to gauge where POSH can be of most use. Your committee are dedicated to this worthwhile cause but can only do so much without funds. We do so very much appreciate all those who have helped us raise a good sum but as always need more. If you are not yet a POSH member please consider joining us. Every penny goes towards restoring the graveyards of Sutherland, final resting place of many of our ancestors. We found this very confusing!! Wondering whether Euphemia and Elspth are Murray names in particular, our Murrays certainly used them, family of Angus Murray and Euphemia Campbell. regards, Ann & Ken ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== Please visit our NEW POSH web site at www.sutherlandheritage.com ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    3. There's always talk of change in some areas of local government, but certainly haven't heard any demand expressed here in the northern highlands. With a population of 13,778 at the census in 2001, Sutherland would struggle to afford its own unitary authority. The population fell slightly on the 1991 figure of 13,842. Denise, Sutherland
