Donald, You're right, of course. However, the 'rule' refers to *Scottish* customs, and not English or Welsh. Moreover, it refers to the 18th and perhaps early 19th centuries, and not, say, 1830 or later in Scotland. But there are all sorts of reasons why the custom was not followed in the early period. Even so, I've found it an enormous help, alerting me on several occasions to a 'missing' child, and pointing me towards the right parents. No, I think the inventor of cat's eyes was a Yorkshireman (it would be!) but I can not remember the name. Donald Massey ----- Original Message ----- > Was that the same one who invented Cats Eyes for roads?
I hope nobody takes this too literally: the "rule" is never more tha a guide, perhaps useful if one is not sure which of similarly named people is likel;y to be the one one is researching. In my Scottish, Welsh and English ancestry, I have found as many exceptions as follwers of the "rule." I am researching the Munro family in Durness/Thurso and Ullapool. I have: Donald Munro (sailor) born Durness 1805 married Jean McKay 1828 in Durness. Jean was daughter of Hugh McKay (shepherd). Donald appears to have been the son of Alexander Munro (tailor) and Katharine Morrison but that has not been verified. The name Alexander is not present in any of his children. Children of Donald Munro Hugh Munro Peggy Munro James Munro Donald James Munro Izzy Johnson Munro Murdoch Munro James Munro born circa 1835 married Hughina Campbell - they were married in Durness in 1861 Jan but were living in Thurso by the 1861 census with Donald's wife who was "Former Wife of a sailor" Jean/Jane McKay Munro was living at 36 Shore Street Ullapool in the 1851 census and was "a sailors wife" Their daughter Peggy was married to Malcolm McLeod and lived in Ullapool in the 1851 census. Neither Donald Munro or James Munro were mentioned in neither census and have not yet been found for that year. James Munro was a master tailor and had a drapers shop in Thurso during the 1870's which I believe was called MUNRO & McKay his daughter Jane McKay Munro married Adam McKay Tailor and later lived in Talmine area. I have been unable to find out anymore about Donald Munro after his sons wedding in 1861 when he was alive I have been unable to find James Munro after his daughters wedding in Feb 1895 Can anyone help me find further details? I have quite a long listing of the Durness marriages and christenings between 1755 and 1840 (some pages missing) if anyone needs any info - please contact me.
I notice that there was another Donald Munro born in the Parish of Durness in 1805. Baptised at the West Moine Mission on Oct 14, 1805 was Donald Mackay Munro, son of James Munro and Mary Munro. No occupation given for the father, James. West Moine is east of the Town of Durness, the area in the vicinity of Loch Hope/Eriboll. I think. While the marriage of James Munro and Mary Munro is not recorded in my transcript of the Durness OPR, I do have some other extracts which show a marriage on Dec 20, 1804 and another on Dec 6, 1805. I've learnt something new from a book recently bought --- Eliz. Haldane: 'The Scotland of Our Fathers', 1933 (a study of Scottish life in the 19th century). She says (p. 31): The only exception to the regular [naming] rule was when the male child was the first to be baptized by a new minister, in which case he invariably received the latter's name.' I hope this explains an odd name in somebody's family. I've got one example in my Fife line --- I thought the parents were trying to put things right with the minister! Sara

Oops Sorry Nancy, that just came out being a common word used around here for "ball point pens" as others have explained. Do make sure you are storing your photos in archival safe photo albums that use page protectors made of polypropylene. The protectors protect the photos was finger prints, dust, spillages and the like. The albums need to be lignin free (natural substance in wood that turns paper yellow), acid free (most paper contains acid) and buffered to prevent migration of acid through the pages if adding memorabilia to your album, eg theatre tickets, newspaper cuttings etc. Also write your memories down with your photos. Obviously if they are old historic ones, you may not know the Who, When, Where, What and Why, but at least write these details down with your current photos as one day they will be historic too. Cheers Jenny Geraldton WA > Excuse my ignorance......but what is 'biro'? Hope to get at a ton of photos > marked if I get some spare time??? > > Thanks, > > Nancy Sutherland Greig..... Hi Nancy, funny how one is suprised when a word that is in common usuage in one's own country isn't known everywhere else! "Biro" is a ball-point pen - I think it known thus because this was the brandname of the first ones here. Goodluck with your photos - but dont use ink!
