Dear Sheila, I'm very happy to find someone searching this family too. My husband Alex is the descendant and I am the family history searcher. I have limited information but what I did find in the L.D.S records is the following: 1. I was not sure that the 'Nelly' Sutherland who married Alexander Matheson was also called 'Helen'. If so--this is great for now I have their marriage date! 2. The Alexander born to them on 3rd Sept 1819 must have died young because they had another son named Alexander--born 0n May 25th 1831 who is the g.grandfather of my husband. This Alexander married Elizabeth 'Betsy' McKay Oct 29th, 1872 and they had 2 daughters and a son-Alexander David James. Alexander D.J. married Elizabeth Fraser McBeath on April 25th, 1902. They had 8 children--the 3rd who is Isabella McKay Matheson--mother of my husband Alex. Back to Alexander and Helen Matheson-- I have their children listed as-- 1. Alexander (Sept 3, 1819) died 2..John (March 1823) m.Margaret McKay 3. Marion (abt 1829) m Thomas McBeath 4. Alexander (May 25, 1831) m Elizabeth McKay 5. James (abt 1832) 6. Helen (June 30, 1833) m Angus Fraser Murray 7. Mary (abt 1837) m Colin Grant 8. David (Feb 28, 1838) not married 9. Katherine (abt 1840) m. Donald Ross 10.Jessie (abt 1843) not married 11. George (abt 1846) m Isabella Murray I would very much appreciate help in sorting all these people out. Hello Kathleen Thanks for the info on Isabel. I will update my references. I would love to read the details of the Last Will and Testament. They tell us so much about life then. Margaret Baillie spent a lot of time trudging through Little Rogart and the old church records trying to find further information on Alexander Murray a few years back. I have also searched, searched and searched again but we find no more. As Alexander goes back to 1738 the chances of finding further information is now becoming slender. But we keep on looking! Hi List One of the problems with being a list manager is knowing what to do when I receive notes about threatened virus attacks on our computers. I have received one this morning which I feel I should tell you about but equally I know that sending out virus warnings to hundreds of people is a good way to spread one. As you know virus normally travels in attachments and as this list (and all Rootsweb lists) do not allow attachments you should always feel safe using it. I am therefore not going to send out every little alert which is passed to me as quite often they are not for real. The current virus is named Budweiser so look out for it. If anything arrives on your computer with that name then dump it. At the bottom of this message (and all my messages) you should see a note certifying that my emails are Virus Free. For anyone who does not have a good reliable virus checker on their system I strongly advise you visit the grisoft web site and take advantage of their absolutely free system. Believe me it works. If anyone feels that I should be passing on every alert please let me know. This is a situation where I am very unsure of what to do. Kathleen Is this any help? Have the names of two further researchers on this family if you wish more information. Christine 6-112/1 WILLIAM MURRAY married CATHERINE ROSS [1770-24/4/1873] [1787-8/7/1864] William was born at Little Rogart, son of Alexander Murray and Margaret McIntosh - see 1-100/1 (OPR). He emigrated to Nova Scotia with his parents in August 1800. William became known in Nova Scotia as "Billy Sheep" due to his habit of gifting newly weds at West Branch River John, where the family settled, with a sheep. Billy lived to be 103 years old. He and Catherine had eleven children, eight sons and three daughters, born in Canada. One of those was WILLIAM, born 1817 Nova Scotia [died 1902 Nova Scotia]. Young William married in 1849 Agnes Rae [1815-1888], who was born in Scotland daughter of William Rae of Dumfries. They had a son: WILLIAM [1853-1912] - married Margaret McKenzie in 1883 - had a son THOMAS [1889-1965] who married Georgia Mackay in Pictou. Thomas and Georgia had a daughter, MARGARET ELIZABETH MURRAY, born 1916 in Canada. 1-100/1 ALEXANDER MURRAY married MARGARET McINTOSH [1738-11/4/1825] Alexander was born in Rogart. He and Margaret had the following children born at Little Rogart: ALEXANDER, born circa 1758 [married Margaret Murray - see 1-106/1]; CHRISTY, born 1760 [died 27 June 1863] [married William McIntosh - see 2-084/1]; WILLIAM, born 1770 [died 24/4/1873] [married Catherine Ross - see 6-112/1]; JOHN, born 25 May 1771 [died 29 April 1866] [married Ann Sutherland - see 4-148] (OPR); MARGARET, born circa 1781 [died 1887] [married Andrew Munro - see 5-029/1]; DONALD, born 1785 [died 9 June 1873] [married Catharine Douglas - see 2-118]. Alexander and Margaret left Sutherland with their family around 1800 and settled in Nova Scotia. A book "The Scotsburn Congregation - Pictou County" by Reverend John Murray, gives us the following information on Alexander: "It was in the year 1800 that the settlement of Scotsburn, by Gaelic speaking people from the Highlands of Scotland, really began. The writer's great grandfather was the first of these Highlanders to arrive in Scotsburn. His name was Alexander Murray. He reached here, with his wife and part of his family, in the month of August, 1800". (editor's note: I believe that the Alexander Murray shown on the 1745 Fencibles List [see 1-010A] may be the father of this Alexander Murray. He appears to be the only Alexander Murray of the correct age in the parish of Rogart at that time. The naming pattern is correct. The young Alexander naming his first born son for his father. The elder Alexander appears to have a brother named John [see 1-010A] - the younger Alexander named a son John.) This family is currently being researched by Margaret Baillie [born 1916] of Canada, great, great, great granddaughter of Alexander and Margaret. Tom Murray in the U.S.A. is a great-great-great-great grandson of Alexander and Margaret. He is currently researching this family. Tom's great, great grandfather, Duncan Campbell Murray, emigrated from Nova Scotia to Minnesota in the 1860s and later homesteaded on the prairies of western Minnesota in 1873. He froze to death in a blizzard shortly after arriving. Hi listers Could anyone tell me how I could find out the details of a relatives (Thomas MCBEATH) army record, without having to go to London? I presume he was in one of the Highland regiments, as he lived in Dornoch most of his life. The 1841 census had him in the army The 1851 census had him as a Chelsea Pensioner May I take this opportunity to thank Christine for setting up this list. I have managed to find out more information than I can cope with in a very short space of time! Regards Carole McBeath
Christine: Thank you for the info on Alexander Murray and Margaret McIntosh - some of which is new! I was also very interested in Tom Murray's e-mail which followed closely behind yours. I am still hoping to find info on the parents of Catherine Ross (1787-1864) who married William "Billy Sheep" Murray (ca. 1770-1873). I have been in touch with Margaret Baillie over the past few years and have received valuable info from her. She once lived in Pictou County, NS, as I did, and I remember visiting her as a small child. This site is wonderful and I thank you again for your quick and accurate responses! Mary, To obtain a certificate for a marriage that occurred in Ontario after 1920*, you must contact the Office of the Registrar General in Thunder Bay. Go to the following Ontario government web site for information and to download the appropriate request form. www.ccr.gov.on.ca/mccr/english/forms.htm There is a fee of $22. Cdn. for the long form and, note, you must be an "authorized" person eg. child of the bride or groom or next of kin, assuming bride and groom are both deceased. The Ontario Gov't is sticky about this. *Marriage records prior to 1920 are on microfilm at the Ontario Archives and are available through Family History Centres. Each year, one more year of records is microfilmed and transferred to the Archives from the Registrar General. So you could wait a few years until the records are transferred if you want to bypass the gov't red tape and the fee. Hope this helps, Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Lee <Leekid@btinternet.com> To: <SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2001 4:37 PM Subject: Anyone out there in Windsor Ontario please?? > Hi lists . > Anyone know how I would trace Marriages late 1920 30s in Windsor Ontario help appreciated. > between Thomas Abbott and Alma??? > They had a daughter called Dorothy living time of his death 1934/5. > He died in the Grace Hospital and was buried in Veterans Cem. > Ifo as to how to get mar cert>> he committed Bigamy as his wife in N Wales was still alive 1975. > Thanks . > Mary N Wales > > > ============================== > Shop Ancestry - Everything you need to Discover, Preserve & Celebrate > your heritage! > http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog > >

I don't know if he is the correct Allan Gray but you could try that email address. Also Paul Gray who responded to a query on Grays of Sutherland on 4th November 2000 on the Sutherland Genweb Project has had contact with this Allan Gray previously and may know his email address.
