    1. RE: [SCT-SUT] (no subject) CULKEIN DRUMBEG AND NEDD ASSYNT
    2. I think Janet was born in Culkein Drumbeg in Assynt. Using estate records and other lists the story appears to be as follows: Neil Morrison is recorded as a tenant in Culkein Drumbeg in 1781. There were Morrisons in that township in 1774 (see my booklet Population Lists of Assynt) Neil becomes a tenant in Nedd in 1809. He dies in about 1813. In February 1814 his widow is recorded as Catharine Graham relict of Niel Morrison. She gives up the tenancy that year when her son-in-law becomes a tenant. Donald Stewart was tenant in Nedd until his death in about 1845 (the last year he is in the rental as a tenant). He is succeeded by his widow Janet Morrison who continues until her death in about 1869. Her son, known as Murdo Stewart, Donald (showing he was the son of Donald) took over until his death on 7 October 1902. His son Hugh Stewart succeeded to the family croft. Donald's son John is recorded as a "boy" in 1830. Another son Alexander is on record in 1834. In 1855 widow Janet Stewart is noted by the estate management as having 2 sons with their families living with her - against estate rules. 1. [SCT-SUT] SUT URQUHART/ROSS - Malcolm Bangor Jones
    2. Emma Young
    3. Hello Malcolm Many thanks for that interesting information. I found Alexander Urquhart on the 1881 census, ( obviously he was retired then as he was 77 but he was also blind - I have been told that the blindness was caused by working in a cold room where they kept the salmon!) but there was no address - it just stated the census place ( Lochbroom, Ross & Cromarty) - I also found his son John who was farming at Farmers House At Square, census place Lochbroom R&C. he had one brother Findlay living with him, another brother David went down to London to live - the fourth son Thomas I am not sure if he went into farming. Obviously I would like to research back as far as I can with the family, but with information like yours it make the family really interesting - again many thanks Regards Margaret

    1. [SCT-SUT] RE: SUT - URQUHART/ ROSS
    2. The Rosehall estate contained two townships with the name Altass: Meikle Altass, now known as Altassmore, (meaning big Altass) and Little Altass. There were no Urquharts in Altass in the 1820s and early 1830s. A rental for about 1842 which appears in a Private Act of Parliament of 1847 lists Alexander Urquhart as one of about 6 small tenants in Meikle Altass. Alexander had about 16 acres and paid just over £9 rent, which makes it a fair rather than a small holding. There were no Urquharts there by 1875 (I have not checked the 1871 census). It would be very interesting to know when the family left and where they went to? The reason I ask is that the estate was bought in 1870 by three speculators who proceeded to sell land to the crofters. Some crofters refused and left. (The estate had been sold by Lord Cranstoun to James Matheson of Achany, the man who had made a huge fortune out of the opium trade, in 1844). 3. Hi Christine, Here is a source for the book you mentioned: http://www.globalgenealogy.com/books/2181460.htm There a link to information about author Norman Crowder, also. The blurb begins: "This books is intended to serve as an index to the Chelsea regimental pension registers of British Veterans who settled abroad with an army pension." Details are as follows: "351 pgs/index/list of military units/notes on sources/ hardbound, 1995, ISBN 0806314605." It would be helpful to have a description of the contents from someone who has actually seen this book. (Any volunteers out there?) The Public Record Office online has an informative leaflet at: http://www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/ri2006.htm (Army: Soldiers' Pensions, 1702-1913). 2. www.old-maps.co.ok <http://www.old-maps.co.ok> gets you to the 1st edition of the 6 inch maps - say about 1870 for Sutherland. Points to bear in mind: arrangement of parishes in Reay estate dates from 1720s; coastal part of Loth transferred to Kildonan in 1840s; boundary changes in 1890s removing outlying districts - I seem to recall this affected outlying district of Dornoch; and transfer of parish of Kincardine from Ross and Cromarty to Sutherland following local government re-organisation in 1975. 2. Jerry Munro
    3. Looking for info on George MUNRO, blacksmith who was born in Scotland, place and date unknown. He married at Pictou, Nova Scotia on 25 Dec 1834, Margaret McKENZIE. Margaret McKenzie was born at Edderton, near Tain, Scotland circa 1808, parents George McKENZIE and Margaret ROSS. Margaret ROSS subsequently married John THOMPSON. Children of George Munro and Margaret McKenzie were Margaret, Ann, John, George Sinclair, Alexander William, Sutherland, and Jane, then possibly a William. George died 04 Feb 1854, possibly Albion Mines, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. George was living at East River, Pictou County at the time of his marriage and birth of the first child, subsequently living at Albion Mines. Parents of George Munro, blacksmith are possibly John and Ann (or Anne, Nancy etc, also possibly Ann Jane or variation) This is based on Scottish naming tradition which runs strongly in this family. Hoping that someone recognizes this family line. Thank you. Jerry Munro

    3. Hi Evelyn, I am very interested in your line of research having just stumbled across a copy of your book, "McBeath Memories." which I currently have on loan from the owner, Margaret H Murray, in Glasgow. It is the Matheson, Clashnagrave connection that particularly interests myself and Margaret. The focus of our interest is the MURRAY family of Inchure, Rogart. Alexander Murray (1773-13/9/1862) married a Helen MATHESON (21/12/1808-27/3/1858) from Clashnagrave, daughter of Alexander Matheson and Janet Sutherland. They married on 25th Dec.1830. Do you know if there is any connection with your Alexander Matheson of Clashnagrave who married Helen (Nelly) Sutherland in 1818? Am I right in thinking that 'Clashnagrave' is one particular house, rather than the name of a township? ----- Original Message ----- From: Evelyn Palmer <evpalmer@home.com> To: <SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 02, 2001 4:06 AM Subject: Re: Research Canada > Dear Sheila, > I'm very happy to find someone searching this family too.
