    3. This map is the 1inch/1mile OS sheet 22 dated 1958 --were acquired it from Ken's father years ago. However we also have the modern Lairg & Loch Shin OS Landranger 16 which we got in Dornoch last year, 1:50 000 scale, which is also good for Rogart (but not Dornoch) There is also a place Achnaluachraach near the West Langwell area too, so does looklike this area. regards, Ann

    3. Hello to Ron and Bill & Diane This is really exciting as both your messages have filled in quite a few little points I have been chasing for years! I checked and I think Ron is correct and that you are both talking about the same Christian (Christina) Ross. I can add a little to Ron's information - Catherine Ross who married Alexander Murray, daughter of Alexander Ross and Marian Calder, and granddaughter of John Ross and Euphemia Murray died on 12 May 1878 in West Zorra, Ontario. I have quite a bit of information on this family and will be happy to pass it on by email if you (or any other interested party) wish to see it. I have been corresponding for many years with a descendant in Ontario. You may recall in earlier messages that I was searching for an Alexander Calder who married Ann Grant and left Dornoch for Zorra in the early 1830's. I have full information on Ann but nothing on Alexander. I now wonder if Marian Calder may be a sister of 'my' Alexander? Anyone any further information on the Calders? Following Alexander Calder's early death in Zorra Ann Grant then married an Alexander Sutherland - Bill and Diane have a Sutherland in their information - did they have an Alexander? A very large party left the Dornoch area around the same time for Canada and the Catherine Ross and Alexander Murray family were part of this group. I believe my Alexander Calder and Ann Grant were also. Would be fun to follow this through. 3. Colin Could this be related: William ROBSON, Torroble, Lairg, died 22 November 1926, aged 78 years; his wife Diana MACKAY, died 4 November 1918, aged 76 years; their sons, Donald J. ROBSON, died Culmailly, Golspie, 17 July 1897, aged 17 years; Walter ROBSON, killed in action, 21 March 1918, age 32 years; daughter Johan ROBSON, died Polly, 7 November 1879, aged 3 years. Diana, born 1842, and William, born 1848, were at some time living in Torroble, Lairg. In 1881 they were at Polly, Clyne, where William was a shepberd. He was born circa 1850 in Inverness. Diane was born in Reay. They had the following children (Robson): Ann Mackay, born 1872 Killearnan, Ross & Cromarty; Clyne; Jessie, born 1874 Clyne; Walter, born circa 1877 Clyne; Donald, born 1880 Clyne. Living with the family in 1881 was Colina McPherson, born circa 1863 Clyne - she was said to be a stepdaughter of William. If this is part of your family will you let me know? 1. RE: [SCT-SUT] James Murray
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hello Ivan I have some information on the James Murray who travelled on the Hector: Walter Murray, born circa 1735, and his wife, Christian, were born in Sutherland. In 1770 Walter was serving with a regiment in India. In July 1773 he and his wife left Loch Broom for Canada aboard the "Hector". They arrived on 17 September 1773 in Nova Scotia. Travelling with them was a James Murray, reputed to be a brother of Walter. Walter, settled at East River, Pictou County. He later moved to Merigonish eventually dying in 1812 at Lower Barney's River, Pictou County. He is buried in Murray Point Cemetery. James Murray, born circa 1730, and Margaret (who may also be a Murray) had a son: GEORGE, born circa 1765 in Sutherland [died 1845 Canada]. James, Margaret and George left Sutherland for Pictou, Nova Scotia, aboard the 'Hector' which left Loch Broom arriving in Pictou on 17 September 1773. They settled in Londonderry, Colchester County (WHY10038). A Londonderry Township Book [reel 12648] shows that George Murray was entrusted with 50 pounds British to build a school in Portapique in 1824. It is believed that James Murray is a brother of Walter Murray who also travelled on the 'Hector'. Also on this voyage was an ABIGAIL MURRAY, born circa 1750-60; ELIZABETH MURRAY and an ADAM MURRAY of similar age to Abigail - see 1-001. An Abigail Murray [c1750-1825] married Aaron Crowe in 1776 in Nova Scotia - daughter of James? An Elizabeth Murray married a William Hall in 1788 in Nova Scotia. She died at Onslow in 1816. Daughter of James? There are many descendants of this family currently researching who can probably answer your query better than I can. I will send you email addresses privately. 1. [SCT-SUT] RE: SUT - ROSEHALL
    2. Carole McBeath
    3. Hi Malcolm, I saw your reply about the Rosehall Estate, which reminded me of a newspaper clipping I have. It is supposedly written by my husband's great, great grandfather, Thomas McBeath, but he appeared to use the alias of John Sutherland for this piece. I have copied it out below for you. The CLAIM OF THE ROSEHALL COTTARS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE NORTHERN ENSIGN. SIR,--Seeing by your last two issues that this case is still before the public, I beg through your valuable columns to give a correct, truthful statement of this long-continued case. Some years ago the proprietor of Rosehall built some slated cottages and a smithy, which are rented by trades-men and others as yearly tenants. These cottages never had the right of any grazing attached to them when let. I can confirm this the more, as I rented some of them for 18 years, and still continue to rent one of them, and during this time I paid £157 of rent, as my receipts will show, but never had a right to any grazing with them. Four of these cottages are tenanted by the alleged cottars who claimed a right to the Westpoint Park grazing. Their names are George Ross, blacksmith-rent until Whitsunday last, £13, reduced then to £6; William M’Leod, carpenter -rent until Whitsunday last, £4, reduced then to £3; William M’Leod, ploughman, only became tenant at Whitsunday-rent £2 12; Hector Cameron also became tenant at Whitsunday last -rent £3. At Martinmas 1880, Mr M’Leay, late of Achness, took a lease of Achness, Rosehall Meadows, and Westpoint Park, which lease terminated at Whitsunday last. There was no clause in the lease binding Mr M’Leay to give grazings to any one. Neither of the four alleged cottars had a cow when Mr M’Leod got the lease, but sometime afterwards Wm, M’Leod, carpenter, and George Ross, blacksmith, got cows, and Mr M’Leay gave them grazing in Westpoint Park at 30s each a year. In October, 1887, some of the Altass crofters petitioned the Scottish Provident Institution to restore to them some meadow- pasture of which they were deprived some years ago. They got a reply that they could not get this, as it was let on lease to another party, but that they would get the Rosehall Meadows and Westpoint Park when Mr M’Leay’s lease expired, it being necessary to have the Westpoint Park attached to the meadows, as the latter are in the time of floods covered with water to the depth of several feet, so that the cattle have to be removed to the park for safety. The extent of the park is about 50 acres. It becoming known that these grazings were offered, other crofters applied for a share in the grazings, and, after a great deal of correspondence, a bargain was concluded and a lease given in February last. During all this time the crofters never applied for a share in the grazings or for the Westpoint Park, but no sooner did the crofters get the lease than the cottars applied to the Scottish Provident Institution for the park. They got a reply that it was on lease to others. They then valued the park for themselves at £4, and sent the money to the Scottish Provident Institution, stating that they were to keep the park. The money was at once returned to them. On 26th May last the crofters put a lock on the gate and took possession of the park. The crofters offered grazing to them at £1 for each cow, their cows to graze with the crofters’ cattle. This offer they refused. The proprietors offered them grazing in an adjacent park, but this offer they also refused. The Scottish Provident Institution afterwards applied to the Sheriff to have them interdicted from putting their cattle into the Westpoint Park, and this the Sheriff granted. The cottars now say that they have been led by other parties’ advice to act as they have done, and that these persons now leave them to the mercy of the lawyers. The law expenses of the case amounts to about £20. These advisers, in place of securing milk for these poor people’s weak families, and which they so very much require, only succeeded in plunging them into difficulties. I am, &c., JOHN SUTHERLAND. Durcha, Rosehall, Dec. 15, 1888. There was also a Rosehall Land League, (Thomas McBeath was a member), which met on a monthly basis to campaign for the crofters.
