    1. RE: Exciting time on the list

    3. Hi Mary See if we can make it simple. It always sounds so difficult but it isn't. The way I do it: Put the list address in your address book and call it something simple - I use "Suth list" Address is SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Now, to send a new message to the list just open a new message as you would normally and at To: just type 'Suth list' Your address book will sort it out from there. To answer a message to the list: Choose REPLY TO ALL Look at the address which comes up in To: you will see the name of the person who sent the message, click on this and delete. This will leave only the address of the list. Write your message and press send. Please feel free to test this by trying it out. Just put testing and we will all know what you are doing. If you have any further problem let me know. 1. Adding my names to the list
    2. With all the names, places and dates being added to this list of late I thought I'd put mine on to see if any connections come along. My Grandmother was Catherine Sinclair McKENZIE born 1896, Glenmore Lodge, near Aviemore. Her parents were Hector McKENZIE born 1853, Farr and Johan MUNRO born 1856, Tongue married 3 May 1878, Tongue. Hector's parents were John McKENZIE and Isabella McLEOD. Hector was a gamekeeper who appears to have been moved to Aviemore by his employer The Duke Of Zetland, possibly as a promotion, possibly as part of the policy of using outsiders as gamekeepers. Johan's parents were Robert MUNRO and Janet McKAY married 28 Mar 1845, Tongue. Robert was a ferryman at Tongue in 1856 and was still a ferryman there in 1881. I think Robert's parent were Donald MUNRO and Catherine MCKAY married 10 Jan 1812, Durness, but I am still waiting to confirm that from more than one source. I only found out about my Sutherland connections a couple of years ago and had only just started following them through when I had to take most of last year out of family history research because of a family illness and bereavement so the listing above is just about as much as I know. As and when I get more information I shall post it to the list. A' the best to you and yours Jim Fowler Gateshead UK http://members.aol.com/chieflymurder

    1. Re: MacKay\Munro\Sutherland from Rogart and Dornoch, Sutherland
    2. Lynn Munro
    3. Hi Christine, Thank you for the welcome. It is my understanding that when Angus MacKay went back to Scotland in late 1828 he commissioned a ship himself to bring his friends and relatives back to Zorra. There is a possibility that the ship was called the "Kate of Newcastle". I do not know if this has been confirmed by anyone. I just found a note in our Mackay history that has been quoted from a book called "One Hundred Years in the Zorra Church" by W.D.McIntosh. It states that Angus returned in 1828 and in 1829 commissioned a "small sailing vessel" with money that was left to his mother Janet Gordon MacKay. The voyage took 13 weeks. After landing in Quebec they had a "usual tedious and dangerous trip of 2 weeks up the St. Lawrence in small open boats towed by Oxen. By ox-cart and along blazed trails through the forests of Ontario they made their way to their future home, arriving in the autumn of 1829." There is another book called History of Zorra and Embro- Pioneer Sketches of Sixty Years Ago by W.A. Ross that gives a similar account but no ship name. I do have some names of people who were probably on the ship but these will not be confirmed. I will include them anyway; Alexander MacKay (farmer), Donald MacKay(blacksmith), Hector MacKay, Angus MacKay, John MacKay (wagonmaker), Donald Murray of Cleargay, McIvor MacKay, James Macleod, W.C. MacLeod and his brothers and sisters, Mrs. Donald MacKay(Leavat) and 6 sisters and four brothers Donald, John, James, George. George MacKay of Relochan Robert Matheson Alexander Munro Squire Gordon Alexander Matheson Hector Ross Alexander Rose William MacKay I have a large amount of information on the original MacKay family that I just received from a great MacKay genealogist. I am still working my way though it. 1. RE: EMIGRATION AND A SAD TALE
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Malcolm this is great. Just checked the families we are all looking for who took a boat. The sailing date of this one fits. I wonder if there is a passenger list for the 'Sylvanus' in Canada?? That poor lad falling off the coach. Imagine heading out to a new life and being killed on the way - tragic. Christine -----Original Message----- From: Malcolm.Bangor-Jones@scotland.gsi.gov.uk [mailto:Malcolm.Bangor-Jones@scotland.gsi.gov.uk] Sent: Monday, March 19, 2001 1:34 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: EMIGRATION AND A SAD TALE **************************************************************************** * This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. **************************************************************************** * On 11 April 1832 it was reported that a lad of the name of Leslie from Sutherland had broken a leg falling off a coach. He had been on his way from Banff, "where he had been for some time past", to Cromarty where he had a passage to America. Leslie had been alighting from the back while the coach was at speed, a common practice at the time. The coach drove on without taking notice. He died a week or so later. It appears that Leslie had a berth on the "Headleys" which sailed on Monday 16 April from Cromarty for Quebec with 230 passengers mostly from Banffshire and Morayshire. The next ship to leave Cromarty was the Sylvanus which was expected at Cromarty between 5 and 10 May The voyage appears to have been organised by William Allan & Son Cromarty. Intending emigrants could obtain a berth from a network of agents, including two in Sutherland: John Fraser, merchant in Dornoch and William Gordon, at Pittentrail, Rogart. The Sylvanus appears to have sailed for Pictou and Quebec on 12 May. I am assuming that the Sylvanus included passengers from Sutherland? 2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** This is Langdale in Strathnaver - midway down the strath on the west bank. It has crossed my mind in the past that Colin Mackenzie may be related to or one of the Mackenzies of Letterbeg in Strathnaver, on the east bank of Loch Loyal. They were related to the famous Dr Mackenzie of Worcester but I cannot as yet tie them into any particular branch of the clan. A marriage with a Gordon of Langdale would make sense. My four times great grandparents are Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon. No matter how many years and how hard I have searched I have not found their beginnings. Family tradition states that Colin was from Reay but I have always questioned that. There were very few Mackenzies in Reay country and I certainly have failed to find Colin. He married Barbara Gordon and together they made their life in Rogart. From 1771 to 1787 their children were born in Rogart. My three times great grandfather being their first son Kenneth, born 1771. I believe that Barbara Gordon is the daughter of William Gordon of Langdale and his wife Bessie Munro. However I have been unable to prove this and as Langdale appears to be a long way from Rogart I could be wrong. Now, today, on this list Lynn Munro from Zorra, has mentioned in her message about Angus and William Mackay taking a boat load of people from Rogart and Dornoch to Zorra. The Janet Gordon she mentioned is also a daughter of William Gordon of Langdale and Bessie Munro! My questions: Am I correct in thinking that Langdale was in the north of the county and not around Rogart? Does anyone know if 'my' Barbara is a daughter of the same family? 3. Hello Lynn Welcome to the list. Would you know if there is such a thing as a passenger list of the people who travelled on the boat which Angus Mackay arranged after he returned to Sutherland in about 1828? A lot of folks very interested in this sailing. Christine -----Original Message----- From: Lynn Munro [mailto:ornum@execulink.com] Sent: Monday, March 19, 2001 2:32 AM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: re: MacKay\Munro\Sutherland from Rogart and Dornoch, Sutherland Hi, I would also like to introduce myself to the list. My interests include the Munros from Dornoch, the MacKay's from Rogart and the Sutherlands also from the same area. I live in West Zorra, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada where a large number of Sutherlandshire people emigrated to following the Clearances. The settlement started about 1819 with William and Angus MacKay, brothers who made their way to Zorra because of land opening up in the township. William had been a Captain in the ninety-third Sutherland and Argyleshire Highland Regiment and at the close of the Peninsular War had been granted his discharge. Angus returned to Sutherland in about 1828 and hired a boat bringing back to Zorra many of his relatives that had been evicted by the Duke of Sutherland. The Munro's may have been on that original boat or they came shortly after. William MacKay was born in Rogart about 1794 and Angus MacKay about 1798. Their parents were George MacKay and Janet Gordon. George's parents were Angus and Isobel MacKay. Isobel at the age of 80 came on the boat in 1829 to Zorra but died within 3 months and was the first person buried in the Old Log Cemetery. Charles Munro married Ann Ross in Scotland and I believe that all their children were born in Canada. If anyone has connections to any of these families I would love to hear from you. 3. Dear Mary-Ann, You are probably aware of an excellent on line data base of emmigrants to Victoria, Australia 1852 to 1875(?). I dont know the website off hand but you can find it with key words such as "Shipping", "Emmigrant", "Victoria". I'm happy to help anyone with any Melbourne, Australia research for emigrants from Sutherland 1850's. 3. Howdy Rick, I don't have any info at all. Other than, like you have, birthdates which bracket Golspie, Sutherland and Vaudreuil, Quebec. I have an IDEA that my gggrandfather and family went to Canada in a big group with others from the Sutherland area. The idea came from Christine Stokes's note of 2/12/2001 "SUT-TO CANADA", that you may already have seen. Maybe someone will dredge up a passenger list with our families on them. 3. Many thanks for this. It is wonderful having people on the list who lived in the area. It shows Corshellach - which is on the Balblair property (where I grew up). It is spelled Coirshellach on the map but I think it is the same place. Adjacent to it, less than a mile away is Coire Buidhe and there is small hill there called Cnoc a' Choire Bhuidhe. This could be Corbuie - I'm sure you know better than I do - the pronunciation is almost the same. I remember the Coirshellach house but that is as far as I go. 3. Hello everyone! My name is Donald Lee Sutherland and I share the same background origins with Glen Matheson. We attended the same little white church at the foot of the Cobequid Mountains at The Falls in Nova Scotia. I am descended from John Sutherland (1804 Rogart) who was a coachman to the Duke of Sutherland. John came to Earltown (Spiddle Hill) in 1831. He married a Janet Murray in 1829, daughter of George Murray and Janet Murray. Their firstborn was William in Dornoch(3 Jul 1830). We know that John came to Nova Scotia with his cousin Duncan Sutherland. Duncan was born to James Sutherland and Katherine Campbell being registered in Rogart 1797. We have no proven record for the birth of John or who his parents were. As his first son was William, we have always assumed his father must have been a William. We look forward to any light on this family puzzle.
