    1. RE boat to Zorra, 1829
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hi Lynn What wonderful information you gave us all. The list of names includes two brothers from my own family: Alexander Mackay, farmer, and his brother Donald, blacksmith. These are the sons of David Mackay, blacksmith of Torbreck, Rogart, and his wife Christian Anderson, my great, great, great grandparents. If anyone else is researching this family I have loads of information. Alexander was born at Torbreck in 1799. He married firstly Catherine Campbell in Rogart and their first child, Marrion was born in 1828 in Rogart. Unfortunately she died as a baby. Catherine died in Zorra in 1857 and Alexander then married Catherine Mackay, daughter of William Mackay and Charlotte Mackenzie. Alexander died in Zorra in 1877 and the second Catherine died there in 1903. Alexander's obituary tells that he was of West Zorra and was a pioneer of this section of country having lived in West Zorra since 1829. He was a native of Sutherlandshire and was held in high respect by all that were acquainted with him. He is buried with his wives in the Old Log Church Cemetery, West Zorra. In 1903 Catherine Mackay, second wife of Alexander, passed away. Her obituary tells that ten sons and daughters survived her. As you can see I know quite a bit about Alexander but virtually nothing about Donald apart from he is supposed to have married and stayed in Zorra for his lifetime. Any information on him would be great. Best wishes Christine chris@northants26.freeserve.co.uk Highland Hearts http://www.highlandhearts.com/ --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. My Great Great Grandfather was JOHN GRANT (Carpenter) who married ELIZABETH(BETSY)MACKENZIE (she is a child of COLIN MACKENZIE and BARBARA GORDON ancestor of Christine Stokes). Their children were born in Dalmore, Rogart. 1. BARBARA b. 13 December 1803 married 1) John Mackenzie 2) John Ross 2. ROBERT b. 20 March 1805 3. ELSPET b. 12 December 1806 4. COLIN b. 16 August 1808 married 1) Christian GUNN 2) MARY MATHESON ( my Great grandmother) 5. WILLIAM YOUNG b. 5 April 1812 6. GEORGE URQUHART b. 23 October 1815 unmarried in 1841 census Since John and Betsy named 1st daughter and 2nd son after Betsy's parents it seems reasonable to assume that John's parents were ROBERT GRANT and ELSPET. QUESTION: Do any other GRANT families of that era have both these names in their list of offspring. JOHN GRANT was said to be of Clashnagrave but presumably his sons would have settled somewhere in the ROGART area where they were born. Does anyone know if any of the others married? Liz

    3. Hallo Malcolm and Christine, we would be very interested in any lists of emigrants from Sutherland/Dornoch area to the Zorra/ Woodstock/East Williams area. We know that William Mackay and his wife Christine Matheson went to East Williams, Middlesex Co. Ontario around 1831-41and lived at 16 Concession East Williams. Also, William had cousins, Donald, Sandy (Alexander) John, Christine Mackay who went to Zorra, Also Angus who went to Goderich. We have copies of letter sent back by William and his son Angus from 1861-1892. regards, Ann & Ken Mackay

My great great and my gt gt gt grandfather on my mother's side were from Durness in Sutherland. John Ogilvie and his wife Jessie McIntosh who lived in Durness and were married in Tongue 10/3/1864. John's father William Ogilvie married Jane Ogilvie but I have no further information about William & Jane. Any information abouth them would be greatly appreciated. The Ogilvies then moved south to Morayshire where they have been to this day. Why they were up in Sutherland is a mystery to me and has baffled the rest of the family. It has crossed my mind in the past that Colin Mackenzie may be related to or one of the Mackenzies of Letterbeg in Strathnaver, on the east bank of Loch Loyal. They were related to the famous Dr Mackenzie of Worcester but I cannot as yet tie them into any particular branch of the clan. A marriage with a Gordon of Langdale would make sense. Malcolm Bangor-Jones -----Original Message----- From: Christine Stokes [mailto:chris@northants26.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: 19 March 2001 14:11 To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Colin Mackenzie & Barbara Gordon ******************************************************************* This email has been received from an external party and has been swept for the presence of computer viruses. ******************************************************************* Here is my absolute brick wall! My four times great grandparents are Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon. No matter how many years and how hard I have searched I have not found their beginnings. Family tradition states that Colin was from Reay but I have always questioned that. There were very few Mackenzies in Reay country and I certainly have failed to find Colin. He married Barbara Gordon and together they made their life in Rogart. From 1771 to 1787 their children were born in Rogart. My three times great grandfather being their first son Kenneth, born 1771. I believe that Barbara Gordon is the daughter of William Gordon of Langdale and his wife Bessie Munro. However I have been unable to prove this and as Langdale appears to be a long way from Rogart I could be wrong. Now, today, on this list Lynn Munro from Zorra, has mentioned in her message about Angus and William Mackay taking a boat load of people from Rogart and Dornoch to Zorra. The Janet Gordon she mentioned is also a daughter of William Gordon of Langdale and Bessie Munro! My questions: Am I correct in thinking that Langdale was in the north of the county and not around Rogart? Does anyone know if 'my' Barbara is a daughter of the same family? You can be certain that when and if this brick wall is fixed I will be a happy lady! 3. I am heading for the Nova Scotia archives on Wednesday pm and will enquire about shipping lists for Pictou sailings but I don't hold out much hope. The names of the Hector contingent for some reason survived but unfortunately the Presbyterian church records up to the mid 1800's were lost in a fire so one cannot even work anything out that way. There might be a list of the ships that called and where they sailed from. Liz Mason
