    3. Hi Liz Wondered if these little pieces of information might just give a clue: ROBERT GRANT of ROGART Robert Grant or Miller is the father of: ELIZABETH, born 30 May 1770 or 1776 Rogart (IGI). ROBERT GRANT of ABERCROSS, ROGART [born between 1685-1729] Robert is shown on the 1745 Sutherland Fencible list What the above does prove is that there was a Robert Grant in Rogart at the time you are seeking him! QUESTION: Do any other GRANT families of that era have both these names in their list of offspring. JOHN GRANT was said to be of Clashnagrave but presumably his sons would have settled somewhere in the ROGART area where they were born. Does anyone know if any of the others married? 3. By accident found in a lecture transcript that my ancestor's brother Wm Paterson Mackay sent a letter from Adelaide Australia back to the "northern papers". When I went to check these for a full version, the letter could not be found, as the dates may have been incorrectly transcribed. Has anyone seen this and can they advise? Per below: - Prof Richards: WP Mackay sent a letter to papers in the north of Scot., (John O'Groats Journal, Inverness Courier), espousing the virtues of the new colony. (ref Prof Eric Richards article Highland Emigrants to SA in the 1850's which cites this letter of W.P.'s pg 8 & 9). Prof Richards states ... "Most of the attractions of the antipodes to a prospective Highland migrant, even before the gold fever, were encompassed in a letter written from Adelaide in 1847 by W.P. Mackay who had left Sutherland two years before. His letter was widely publicised in the northern newspapers. He wrote: The time has now arrived when emigrants from Caithness, Sutherland, Ross, Orkney and Zetland, may get a free passage from their own country if they choose ... [to] this country, which is replete with plenty. Here is no starvation, no seizing your goods for taxes, no begging for work, but plenty of good meat at 2d. per lb., bread 6d per loaf. The poorest Zetland fisherman, were he here, could actually live more sumptuously than the best gentry in these islands; for here, on 30s. per week (labourer's wages) a man may have meat every meal, bread cheaper and better than in all Scotland. He spoke glowingly, and for his readers incredibly, of peaches, figs, grapes, melons and wine in profusion. He spelt out the dream further: To the mechanics and farmers of Caithness I would say, take your ploughs, harrows, and farming implements, and tools and come here as quickly as possible. You, in a few years, will be independent. You may buy a section of 80 acres for £80, fence it in, build a house, plough, sow and reap. In a few years, yes, in one year, you may pay your family's expenses with the growth of wheat and potatoes. "You can worship as you think proper here. Religious sects of all kinds and persuasions are on an equal footing. Government will give them aid, if they petition, either for building churches or schools, and also aid teachers. Here are no taxes, the taxes being raised on goods imported." To the Highland Scot in the midst of famine, it must have sounded like paradisiacal music. But in reality it was a description rose-tinted by the current conditions of boom in South Australia, by a man who had landed on his feet and had some capital to give him a start. &c." Prof Richards. (Richards dates this letter as 1849 but says it appeared in 1848? Anyone come across this or know how I might find the full "letter". John McKay in Australia

    3. Hi I have been researching this family for some time without being able to definitely pin down our line. James and Alexander McKay are such common names. Anyhow, my ancestor James Rose McKay was born in the Parish of Dornoch in June between 1819 and 1822 (can't define a date as he seemed to change his age on different documents). I have no idea if he had any brothers or sisters but it is likely there were. According to the family bible, James father was Alexander McKay born 1787 died 1852 (where I have no idea possibly Dornoch). Alexander's occupation as given on James Death Certificate in 1893 was a blacksmith. I can't confirm this info. Again, according to the family bible (and I have not sighted this as it was transcribed for me) Alexander's wife was Ann Sutherland no date of birth but a death date of 1826. I have not been able to find any marriage between Alexander and Ann on the IGI or OPR so this info might not be accurate either. Now James enlisted with the 71st Highland Light Infantry Regiment in 1835 giving his age as 18 (but he could have stretched the truth a little in order to be able to enlist) because in 1858 he stated his age on the birth certificate of one of his children as 39 putting his date of birth as 1819. Following discharge in Lachine, Lower Canada (now Quebec) James married a Mary Peck in 1839 and there was two children, Alexander born 1842 and James E. born 1845. Mary Peck died in 1845 in Odelltown, Quebec Canada. James Rose remarried an Elizabeth Barbour in 1848 and I found James Rose McKay and Elizabeth living in Woodstock, East Zorra township, Oxford County, Ontario in the 1851 Census. James junior was living with them but Alexander was not shown on the census? Anyway, James and Elizabeth decided to emigrate to Melbourne Australia but did not bring James E and Alexander to the new country with them. They remained in Canada with Elizabeth's parents, Robert and Mary Barbour (nee Orr). This is a mystery I would like to clear up - possibly there are descendants of James and Alexander still in Canada. Anyway, you may be interested to read all of this and if no connection can be made now, who knows at a later stage. 3. Hi Lynn Am interested to see in your list an Alexander Rose. My ancestor James Rose McKay travelled with the 71st Highland Light Infantry regiment to Montreal in 1835 where he served until his discharge in 1838. I can find no connection with a Rose family. Supposedly James father was Alexander McKay. Thanks for any help you are able to offer. Mary-Ann Farr Lynn Munro wrote: > > Hi Christine, > Thank you for the welcome. 3. Hi Janet Welcome to the list. Do you want a map of Scotland on the internet? If the places you are going to look up are from Sutherland or the Highlands in general you may not find them as a lot of the old places are gone now. Try www.streetmap.co.uk I use that and find it very helpful. Please do not hesitate to post your queries anyway. We will soon tell you if you are in the wrong county. Someone may even be able to tell you where they are. We are quite a friendly, helpful bunch. 3. There is also a list for Midlothian on RootsWeb. It is a much smaller and less active one that this list, but a good one, none the less. MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com There is an Edinburgh list, too. Lyndall Canberra, Oz. ----- Original Message ----- Hi Florence, Leith is the port for Edinburgh and is in the County of Midlothian. Kelso is in the County of Roxburgh. I dont know any email addresses for either but I believe there is a list for Roxburgh on Roots Web. I suggest you log on and search their list of lists. If by any chance you are interested in the Blyth family from Kelso, I have a lot of info on them. Good hunting, Ian Morrison ----- Original Message ----- Hello everyone My name is FLORENCE PATTERSON and I live in Stratford, Ontario, Canada Can anyone tell me the email address for a couple of the Counties in the south portion of Scotland? Namely, Leith and the county in which Kelso is located? Would greatly appreciate any information. Florence

    3. Hi again Lynn Do you have any further information on Janet Gordon, wife of George Mackay of Rhelochan, Rogart? I believe this Janet Gordon may be a sister of my 4 x great grandmother, Barbara Gordon. Any info would be helpful.
