You say much has been written on John Sutherland and the boys but not much about "their brave mother, Catherine Grant" - tell us more? 3. Hi Rhonda I have a bit on Catherine Grant. Catherine Grant was listed as age 46 when she came over on the 1813 expedition on the ship Prince of Wales. Her husband died of typhoid fever 2 Sept. 1813 and the remaining family and passengers wintered at Churchill in sub-zero weather with few rations. The eldest three children snowshoed from Churchill to York Factory in April 1814. Catherine and her youngest Alexander joined them on 25 Aug 1814. Catherine went east to West Gwillimbury, ON with her sons Donald & Alexander on 16 June 1815. Hope this helps. It is taken from The Lord Selkirk Association of Rupert's Land 1812 - 1997 Book. 3. Hi Sheryl Vic Oz (?): I would guess that Roberta was a daughter of the following Robert Pope of Loth? From the Sutherland Papers: (these two entries are notes of Patrick Sellar) Vol2 p6, note 1: 'Robert Pope, tacksman of Navidale, received a wadset of Gartymore, Achintou and Liriboll on 27 September 1799'. Vol1, Table III, pp238-240: Wadsets in existence in 1802 but redeemed before 1816: #11. Gartymore (Loth); held in 1802 by Robert Pope, who disponed to trustees in 1808; redeemed in 1815. There was another Pope family in the area; I think a brother of Robert Pope. There are others who would recognize this family on the list. 3. Hi Ronald Patrick, I thought someone on the list told me that Patrick Sellar, manager of Culmaily, destroyed his papers. If there are Culmaily papers I would like to know about them. Why? Because my 3rd great grandfather, Stephen Clark, herded sheep for Mr. Sellar from about 1820 to 1832. I would be most pleased to find anything about Stephen during his Culmaily/Golspie period, before he went to Quebec. Thanks, Bob Eckerman On Sat, 24 Mar 2001 16:18:10 -0500 "J. 3. Hi Listers In the IGI is an entry for James MCDONALD supposedly baptised to Hugh MCDONALD & Elizabeth ANDERSON at Rogart parish on 21 March 1809. The entry is WRONG. I saw microfilm of the register in 1988 and the name of the father was in fact extremely difficult to decipher. His name was much scribbled upon and it was most likely Philip but could also have been Finlay and even Ralph. No way was it Hugh! the transcriber must have been on something. The location of the parents in Rogart parish was Dalnessie. I asked the LDS to do something about the entry some time ago but nothing has been done. Given the name of the mother, the father is most likely Finlay MCDONALD who was also known as Philip. Finlay MCDONALD & Elizabeth ANDERSON are my great-great-great-grandparents. They had further issue in Rogart parish in 1811 (William) and 1817 (Janet). Earlier issue were born Laig parish. There is no substitute for viewing actual registers. Don't rely on the IGI even if it says it is parish register data. Peter DILLON

    3. Hi Listers I have previously written to the list re Finlay MCDONALD & Elizabeth ANDERSON of Lairg parish who took most of their family to Canada in 1830, except for son Angus who stayed behind to marry Margaret MCCOLL, the latter two taking their large family to Victoria Australia in 1853. Finlay had a brother William whom Florence PATTERSON reports went to Canada also with his wife Lillie and issue Philip, Hugh & Neil. A quick search of the IGI reveals NINE issue baptised at Rogart parish to William MCDONALD & Lilias MACKAY, Philip, Hugh & Neil being the youngest. Does anyone think they have connections with or information about these people? ie Parents: Father: William MACDONALD Mother: Lilias MACKAY 1. There is no record of his birth or baptism on the IGI; nor is there a record of his parents' marriage. Robert died in Grey County, Ontario in 1874 at 79 years of age. We think maybe Elizabeth died in Scotland. Any help is much appreciated. Sincerely, Carol Small

    3. Thanks for the info, Dick. I will check it out. There are several of us who would like to attach Stephen Clark and family to a specific boat. Re Party from Sutherland to Canada circa1832.As this would have been about 16 years after the original Red River Settlement was wiped out, restarted the following year,it is possible!that the passenger lists were better kept.To that end if you key http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=82767820 into your browser. It will not get you anything as the number has been removed from their database. However in the Search panel enter "New World Immigrants",without the " and you will be amazed at what pops up.It is some sort of Bidding Forum. There appears to be at least a thousand different Genealogy Books and Ship Lists. You never know. 1. McKay from Dornock to NB(Havens) to Zorra
    2. Anderson
    3. I'd like to fill in some blanks in my McKay family tree. Ruth Havens (b. 1831, Shediac, New Brunswick; d. 1907, Stratford, Ont.) married James McKay (Dornock). Had 4 children: 1. Catherine McKay (m. James Priestly, 1882), 2. Samuel G. McKay (m. Charity Ann Meadows, d. 1920, Ailsa Craig, Ontario), 3. Susan Ann McKay (b. 1850, m. William Arthur Brown in West Zorra, d. 1950, Ailsa Craig) 4. John Havens McKay (b. abt 1854, West Zorra) Ruth then married William McKay (Dornock, supposedly James brother). William was born 1832, and died 1909 in Stratford, Ont. 4 children. 1. Ruth McKay (b. 1865, m. David Wilton) 2. Willena (Willemena?) McKay (b. 1867, m. William Martin) 3. Andrew Alexander McKay (b. 1869, m. 1896 to Edith Mary Baumgartener) 4. Marion McKay (b. 1871 West Zorra, m. Robert Thompson, d. 1967, Vancouver). Christine Stokes kindly sent me information indicating that James and William could be brothers, sons of John MacKay and Merran MacKay of Dornock. They had a James, born 1820 and a William born 1832, with additional sisters and brothers, especially John and Andrew. We had heard that John and Andrew came to Canada with William, but census information provided by Christine seems to indicate that William and John left the area before Andrew. I am trying to determine where and when James McKay and Ruth Havens married. And what happened to James that allowed Ruth to marry his brother William. Also, when and on what ship(s) James and William arrived in Canada. David Anderson Hopewell, NJ
