    1. SUT: Lachlan ROSS and Hannah MATHER
    2. Sue Mackay
    3. I am new to this list and would be interested to hear from anyone with information about Lachlan ROSS, grieve/bailiff for Alexander CLARKE at Eriboll, Durness. Lachlan was born in Kincardine, Ross in 1791 and died aged 88. His first wife was Anne FRASER (1791-1837) and his second wife was Hannah MATHER, born in 1815 at the height of the Clearances as the illegitimate daughter of Thomas MATHER (manager of a sheep farm who came from Northumberland) and Kit McKENZIE, thought to be in his employ. Lachlan and Hannah had 6 children (Lachlan had 5 from his first marriage) The eldest, John Clark ROSS (b.1841) and his younger brother William (b.1850) emigrated to Texas and founded Rossville in Atascosa County. Annie Fraser ROSS is our ancestor and moved to London after the death of Lachlan in 1879 to work in service for a Mary Elizabeth JONES. She later married Alexander MACKAY (also from Sutherland) and settled in Glasgow. Thomas died aged 15 and is buried with Lachlan and Hannah in Arnaboll Burial Ground I would be interested to hear from any descendants of the other two children James (bap.12 Aug 1844 Durness Free Church) Alexander Robert (born 23 Feb 1856 Eriboll Sue Mackay South Wales

    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** Kildonan manse was close to the church. In those days there were not such things as excavation reports. Some artefacts from early "digs" in Sutherland found their way into Museums - the Dunrobin Museum contains various artefacts as do the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh. The National Monuments Record at the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland should be able to point you in the right direction. You can search online at the Commission's site using CANMORE. The Record is arranged by current 1:10,000 map sheets, so you need to know the sheet reference number. Royal Commission pre-afforrestation survey of Kildonan only covered an area to the north of the church/manse. However, the brief publication does include maps of the remainder of the Strath. No sign of any cairn near the church. 3. I will check the Ritchie list of cemeteries on my next trip but I don't recall seeing a list from Three Brooks. I don't know what area of the county it is in and it is not on the old ( pre 1870 ) map I have on hand. I will check a current map as it has probably survived. Remember he only did 33 out of 150. Also some of those were just little clearings in the woods not adjacent to the church and used for the one or two families in the area. Keeping Grandpa in the barn until Spring when the grave could be dug was also standard practice, I believe. Once I establish the exact location I could see if records have survived in that area. Liz

    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** Patrick Sellar did destroy his papers. The information about the Popes comes from the two published volumes of Sutherland Papers covering the period c1800 to 1816, edited by the late Robin Adam and published by the Scottish History Society). These volumes draw on the Sutherland Papers in the National Library of Scotland and also on documents in the Staffordshire Record Office in England. The chance of finding something about one of Sellar's shepherds in the Sutherland Papers is very very slim, particularly for the period you are interested in. If there are Culmaily papers I would like to know about them. Why? Because my 3rd great grandfather, Stephen Clark, herded sheep for Mr. Sellar from about 1820 to 1832. I would be most pleased to find anything about Stephen during his Culmaily/Golspie period, before he went to Quebec. Thanks, Bob Eckerman On Sat, 24 Mar 2001 16:18:10 -0500 "J. 3. Hi Marla, Rhonda, There is a IAGenWeb site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iajones/scotch/scotch.htm that hosts a segment dedicated to the Scotch Grove (Iowa) Pioneers. This group moved down from the Red River Settlement in 1837. JOHN SUTHERLAND, CATHERINE GRANT's eldest son was a member of this party. The story was written by JOSEPHINE SUTHERLAND and, in most respects, is well-researched. However, it includes some wonderful myths about CATHERINE GRANT and her children, "Little JANET" (Rhonda's ancestor) and ALEXANDER that you might find amusing. When reading this, bear in mind that, as Marla stated, Catherine and her children (except John) came to Ontario in 1815. The events described are historical facts. They occurred after the family left the colony. Catherine Grant did not take part in them. When I have encountered stories that contain incorrect information, I have sometimes wondered whether it would have been better if nothing was written. Repeatedly, I have been surprised to find a wealth of information buried in them. I was sent a copy of this story when I first began researching the family. I had not made a firm connection from my known ancestor, DONALD SUTHERLAND to CATHERINE GRANT until I noted Josephine Sutherland's comment about her correspondence with MARY BRADEN, Catherine's granddaughter. That was a key clue. I did know that Donald's daughter, MARY had married JAMES BRADEN. I had found a firm link between my Bradford, Ontario family and the Scotch Grove family. I learned that Catherine Grant had lived with Donald's family until her death. There are no records of her death and burial, no tombstone but I am fairly certain that she is buried in the same plot as my gg-grandparents. 3. Hi Ian Thanks for the information unfortunately I already had that and it here I have hit a black hole. Its the information on the William and Jane who were married on 30 Mar 1831 that has me stumped as I don't know where they came from or what they were doing so far north as Ogilvie is not a name that is usually associated with Sutherland. Williams grandson another William moved down to morayshire circa 1890 and the family have been there ever since. If you have any info from Durness that could poss help I would be most greatful.
