Hi All Your right Christine it is awfully quite, I'm still waiting and hoping some information will come through for me on Donald Gibson, and periodically I stick my nose in and try to help someone else. 1. RE: A MURRAY DEATH LEADS TO A DISPUTE
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Malcolm I think this is the family you speak of: Donald Mackay married Ann Murray. They had a daughter: Helen MACKAY, born circa 1792 [died 16 April 1857 Golspie - spinster, pauper]. Helen's death certificate was signed by John Grant, Inspector of Poor. She is buried in Golspie. At least part of the family stayed on in Golspie but this does not say if Helen remained at the Glen. No doubt a look at the death certificate in Edinburgh would give an address. A single child, William, had been born to the marriage before she died in September 1794. Polson claimed that, on 24 September, Helen's sister Ann Murray, wife of Donald MacKay alias Taylor tenant in the Glen of Dunrobin, in the parish of Golspie, had come with her husband to Polson's house and carried off some of Helen's clothes and a small quantity of wool. It subsequently emerged that Polson had given the clothes "partly as a Complement, and so much of her deceased Sister's Cloathing, in the way of remembrance of her, and partly for a Service of Fifteen days" which Ann's daughter was to perform "in Cutting down and Ingathering his Crop". He claimed that he had given his sister-in-law a gown on condition that she would clothe his boy "with a Coat and Kilt". She had refused. The result was that Ann Murray had to pay for the wool. Donald Mackay is recorded as living in Leadreoch or Leadreavach, a part of the Glen of Dunrobin, in 1798. Did he move or did he stay when the Glen was turned over to the landlord's sheep? 3. Hi Ray, If one takes university classes, you receive your 'masters' and should that if you are female become 'mistress'??? It is no big matter to me whether it is webmaster or webmistress, whatever makes you happy Ray! Christine and I created Highland Hearts together as a partnership web site, the arrangement being that she provides the genealogy research and Scottish content and I as webmaster do the programming, designing and maintenance. It was at Christine's suggestion that I make people aware by advertising I am webmaster that people would know that I do the web site creation. Christine started this mailing list as a resource for people to be able to post queries and she went out of her way to get some good knowledgeable people such as Malcolm Bangor-Jones, and Sheila MacKay, or Glen Matheson or one of the many other good informative people to come on the list and help people. I am sorry to see the list being reduced to this. This mailing list is a wonderful resource for people. Thomas MacPherson the other day posted a warning to us all of problems with Rootsweb (Genforum) and Christine said that everyone is aware that they do employ these unscruplous methods, but I when I started out was unaware and everyday there are people getting their first computer and going on the web for the first time who are not aware of the methods they employ. It was in fact Christine who used those exact words of caution to me about not posting too much information to message boards and mailing lists. The good side of message boards and mailing lists far outweigh the poor side. You receive worldwide exposure to your query and the opportunity to locate family links and have good knowledgeable people assist you. I myself participate in message boards and mailing lists and will continue to do so, however I am cautious about the amount of information I give out and always ask that they contact me by email if they have pertinent information. Once bitten, twice as shy. In fact Christine and I first met through a message board posting to which she replied to me, but after our initial contact, we corresponded our information only through email. We have a wonderful friendship, a great partnership and are heart sisters and Highland Hearts was a result of our friendship. So let us use this mailing list as a great resource as it was intended to be instead of using it for trivial matters. 3. Hi Sheila, As Malcolm says NAS hold all the rcords of the Northern Lighthouse Board. You can consult the Register of Lighthouse Keepers in the Historical Search Room at Register House (if that's what they still call it?) in Princes St. The indexes are in the wee room off where the Will records are on the 1st floor (Ref. nlc4/1/1-5) and the microfilms are through beyond the enquiry desk in an unmarked, metal, filing-cabinet drawer. I was consulting them a few weeks ago. So long as you don't ask a novice (which I did) you will find them easily enough. Perhaps by now they will have put a label on the drawer with the m/films!! Apart from the registers I don't think they have much instantly available; other records have to be ordered from storage. Hope this helps. 2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hello all I feel that I must add my twopenny worth to this warning. Firstly without the ability to read Genforum and similar type message boards very few of us would have made contact with others researching the same names. So long live the message boards, forums, etc. They are a very useful tool especially when you first start out. However, it has been known for a long time that Family Tree Maker and others do copy these and record the information as fact rather than a simple query. To later sell this information without contacting the person who raised the message is both wrong and immoral. It has to be said that the internet is full of wrong information and we must check, check and check again before taking anything as fact. Genealogy on the internet is fun - lists and message boards are useful - but never accept anything without checking and then checking again. Nothing beats having a certificate in your hand! If you do not want to end up on a CD then 'forget to fill in' the surname list box on genforum!
