Hi All, Just reposting my family interests. The first being the family of ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND. He was born February 1756 Golspie and in December 1785 married MARON MCKAY (MACKAY) in Dornoch. Maron died July 1830 at Birichen, Dornoch. They had the following children: David born 1785 Dornoch . James born 1790 Dornoch. John born 1791 Dornoch, Margaret born 1793 Dornoch. John born 1795 Dornoch. Helen born June 1804. (My gg grandmother) Kenneth born 1809. I have not yet been able to verify who their spouses were with the exception of Helen. The surnames I think may be possibilities are ROSS, MACKAY, GRANT, MATHESON, MCLEOD and MCDONALD. My other family is the family of ANGUS MUNRO and CHRISTINA GRAHAM. Angus was born September 1770 in Cromarty and married Christina Graham in 1787. Their first three children William 1788, Hector 1790, Hugh 1793 were all born in Ross & Cromarty . Their next son Donald was born c 1801 Sutherlandshire, but I can find no record of his birth. The next three children Margaret 1802 Dornoch, James 1805 Skibo Dornoch and Christian 1808 Cyderhall Dornoch. Spouse possibles for the above except Donald who married Helen Sutherland in 1826 Dornoch are ROSE, MANN, FRASER and MCKAY. If anyone has a connection with these families or any of the surnames mentioned I would like to hear from them. I know that Sutherland and Munro are very common names but I hope that someone may be able to at least let me know if I am on th right track. Regards, Judy. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
Hi Amanda I see you are looking for someone in NZ who is researching the same name as you. Have you looked at the NZ Society of Genealogists site: http://www.genealogy.org.nz/ Select Resources Then Members Interests Good luck Mary-Ann Farr Christchurch, New Zealand
To add insult to injury here - on researching the NZ Death Indexes at the Registrar General's Office - all Mc and Mac names are spelled Mac e.g. McKay would appear as Mackay. I would have thought in the 1990's we would have paid more attention to detail. Hi list, I have been reading the list for a few weeks and think it is time I posted some of my family from this area. Peter Murray b. Kildonan m. Mary Rose in abt.1792, daughter of William Rose and Marjorie Henderson, Mary was b. 1763 in Watten, Caithness. Son: Anderson Murray b. 1802 , Kildonan M. Esther Gunn, daughter of Donald Gunn and Esther Sutherland, their daughter Roberta Murray marr. John Murray son of William & ?. Their oldest son John Murray was my great grandfather, he married Christina Smith from Lerwick,Shetland Isles. John and Christina remained in the islands for the rest of their lives, they had four children. My question is this, John Murray who married Roberta is listed as a Chelsea Pensioner and as far as I can tell is dead by 1856, I have been unable to find his death, who his mother was and anything about his time in the service, so he is my brick wall. Any information at all would be welcome, and I would be glad to share what I have on the rest of this family, (which is quite a bit) with anyone looking for the same 'roots'. Catherine. p.s. I love this list, congratulations Linda and Christine.
Lyndall: Here's some Cluness info that I found in some writings of Rev. A.M. Sinclair which may have been printed in the Eastern Chronicle, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada(don't have any dates). Not sure if any of these are connected to yours or not but thought I would post them anyhow. "The first Cluness lived at Cracaig, in Loth, came from Ross-shire. He was factor to the Earl of Sutherland. His son, who succeeded him as factor, had two sons, Gordon and John. Gordon entered the army, and rose to the rank of colonel. He had three sons, Archibald, William and Gordon. Archibald died in the West Indies. William was major in the army. He was a tall, stout and handsome man. He retired from the army at quite an early age. He resided at Cracaif, where he died in 1829. Gordon, youngest son of Colonel Cluness, was a captain in the army. He fell from his horse at Bonar Bridge and was drowned." Another: "I was told that Angus McKay, Donald McKay, of the Woodhouse, Donald Bruce, Donald Douglas, John McLeod, Alexander Grant, and George, son of Major William Cluness, came to Pictou on the same ship. Donald Bruce came by the ship Harmony in 1822. This information I have from Hector H. Bruce - a man who has taken more interest than any one else in the history of Barney's River and to whom I feel very grateful for his efforts in collecting historical facts. His letters in the Eastern Chronicle in 1886 were exceedingly interesting." Good morning, Buried next to my gg-grandparents at the Auld Kirk in Bradford, Ontario, Canada, are ANGUS SUTHERLAND and his mother, ELIZABETH SUTHERLAND. I have no idea on whether there is a connection between our families, so this is a shot in the dark. ANGUS, his mother and a sister, BETSY came to Canada with Selkirk's settlers on the Prince of Wales in 1813. They came from Auchraich. The passenger list gives ELIZABETH's age as 60 (b. 1753). According to her tombstone inscription, she was a native of Sutherlandshire, who died 19 Feb. 1841 at age 90 (b. 1751). BETSY SUTHERLAND died on tuberculosis shortly after the ship landed in Canada. The passenger list gives her age as 18 (b. 1795). The passenger list gives ANGUS' age as 20 (b. 1793). According to the tombstone, ANGUS died 24 Mar 1885, aged 103 years (b. 1782). The Simcoe County Archives has a receipt for a money order that ANGUS and another man named (William???) Sutherland sent to Scotland. The recipient was CATHERINE SUTHERLAND. I did not copy the details, since I did not consider the possibility of a connection (nor the extent that I would succumb to genealogy). Does anyone know this family? With thanks, Rena

Just had to annouce this---this is my GGG Grandfather, the last entry you posted. I'm still searching for his ancestors and siblings. I do know that he had one sister Ann McKenzie who married William Sutherland and they emigrated to Barney's River, NS, in 1820. My William McKenzie married Catherine Sutherland in Scotland. Still trying to find her ancestors and siblings. Oh well I have just proved that I really do make mistakes. I misread 1918 for 1818. I shall keep quiet in future Liz
Did you find a passenger list for the Ann Sheilds? if so where. Also 50 people will probably email you to point out the typo of Kitty dying before she was born! Glad to know others make mistakes Liz
In my line I have a Nelly (Helen) SUTHERLAND married to a Alexander MATHESON 19 Dec 1818 Dornoch This would mean she was 14 if she was yours born in 1804 which seems a tad young but I daresay legal in those days. Her first child that I found was born in a respectable 1825 but there maybe others before that. The children are all baptised in Dornoch Mary 22 Mar 1825 Alexander 25 May 1831 Janet 10 Oct 1835 Helen 16 Oct 1837 David 27 Feb 1838 Don't know if this helps Liz
Yes, Darthy, IGI does stand for Internation Genealogical Index. A very useful tool but one that needs careful checking back to source - normally old parish registers. Thank you Christine, I will search that site out too. I have been very fortunate in others sharing their research. I have Information from Pat Mccloy's research, and of course HBC, which he (Pat)also did a lot of research for. Have yet to check out Glen Bow Museum in Calgary. Robin, Not sure if you misread my email, but the first letter of Iestyn is an 'i' (not an 'l'); it's pronounced as if it were a 'Y' --- as in English 'yes-tin'. I have often wondered about that typical Armenian personal name ending '-ian' --- so now I know! The Welsh for 'son' is 'mab', earlier, 'map'. You'll have guessed that it's the P-Celtic (Welsh/Cornish/Breton) version of Q-Celtic (Scottish/Manx/Irish Gaelic) 'mac'. Best of luck in your search Sara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robin VanBelleghem" <robinvb@home.com> To: "Sara Thomas" <sethomas@btinternet.com> Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2001 4:58 AM Subject: Re: Gosh it is quiet Hi Everyone I checked on the IGI for Lestyn there was 2 of them from Wales there is a couple also of Jestyn and Jestin, they are exactly how you suggested Sara with the ap in them. So both you and Jim are most likely right, since the earliest version I can find is in Wales, this aught to be fun trying to link all these names together. I am of Armenian decent and it seems our last names are the same, they take the father's first name and add ian on the end of it [ian means son of] my last name was Humpartzoomian, it is pronounced Hum- part-zoom-ian but I've come across a lot of interesting variations of this one this one as well. And you right Jim it would take all the fun out of researching if it was easy. Thank-You for your suggestions. Hi all Just thought I would put my piece in seeing as we are talking about the census. At least historians are starting to see the value in the census returns in New Zealand. For the first time ever, they are telling people the forms will be kept for 100 years and then could be published. Anyone can ask that their details are not published - unlucky for someone. All previous years census in NZ have been destroyed. However, we have our electoral rolls - everyone over the age of 18, (used to be 21) have to register to vote and everytime you change your address at the post office your details are amended. This roll is published every 4 years so it is a very valuable source of info. Thats all from me for now. Regards Mary-Ann Farr
