    3. Dear Franklin, I am looking for Mathesons from Pictou County. As I am a "newbie" to this I still need to get the birth date of my Great Grandfather James W. Matheson probably born between 1865-1880 and married Christina Frazer (or Fraser). My grandfather Clifford E. Matheson was born in 1907 in Poplar Hill Pictou County.I seem to have more information on my Grandmothers side the Falconers as I found a small box of photos. I'll post more when I have it Regards, Julie-Ann Matheson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Franklin Fiske" <ffiske@north.nsis.com> To: <SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 04, 2001 6:55 PM Subject: Sutherlands, Matheson > Help needed; > Birth, marriage, where intombed. > Christian MacKay w/o Alexander Matheson whose children were; John b 1784, Thomas b 1787, John b 1791, James b 1793, > Catherine b 1796. > Margaret MacKay w/o Alexander Sutherland whose child was b 1789. > They would be in the Dornock, Skelbo, Torboll area. > I live in the Pictou Co. area of Nova Scotia could look up the Sutherlands, Mathesons, Mackays in that area for any one interested. > Frank ffiske@nsis.com > > > ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== > You may, at times, wish to check out previous messages to this list. 1. Re: SUT- 19th century parish populations
    2. Liz Mason
    3. The drop in population might not seem so much but if you compare it with a community of any size elsewhere in Britain, the 19th century saw an enormous %increase in the population as families were huge and infant and adult mortality rates were improved as hygiene and diet changed for the better. Some of these improvements would not have been so noticable up in an area like Rogart but instead of saying " the population dropped by 40% in 80 years" it would probably be more accurate to say" the population would have been 5 times higher by 1881 than in 1801 had it not been for the Clearances" . Of course people probably would have moved away South for better employment prospects anyway because of the fact that they couldn't buy their own land and had to put up with the nasty landlords. I have always wondered why my lot managed to stay put when so many were thrown out, but those statistics put it all in perspective.. in fact you had a fairly good chance of remaining provided you didn't annoy the folk in charge. Which is perhaps why my G-G-grandfather called one of his sons after the agent William Young just to keep on his good side. By the way Christine did you say something about the site being too quiet? Don't do that again!! Liz

    1. 1863 Gaelic book re Donald SUTHERLAND
    2. Frances Bishop
    3. Greetings to all. This is a recycled query, originally sent to the Nova Scotia List (1998). Title Details: Cumha d'athair: Domhnull Sutherlan a bh'ann am Brora an Siorrachd Chatabh, agus a dh'eug sa' mhios Mhaigh 1863. Does anyone on the SUT list have the Gaelic? I would dearly love to know how this title translates into English. During a visit to the National Library of Scotland (on holiday from Canada), my husband and I found reference in the Sutherland Estate Papers to a Donald Sutherland who was a water bailiff at Brora, County Sutherland (sorry, I have no other details). I wonder if there could be any connection between this man and the man in the book's title. I will be grateful for any help at all with this one. This title is held by Glasgow University. The citation given on the excellent COPAC web site for UK university libraries is "Main Library; Celtic, JG120, SUT; No 1 of 8 pamphlets bound together". The COPAC web site (university research libraries in the UK and Ireland) for searches by author/title, periodical and subject is at http://copac.ac.uk/copac Does anyone know of a Canadian library source for this publication? Best wishes, Frances bishad@direct.ca

    3. Hello I also have this book and others which show these population figures. I do not know what others think but I have often wondered if the figures have been 'doctored'! We all know how devastating the Clearances were but looking at the figures not so bad! Apart from Kildonan of course which was virtually emptied. In Rogart it was said "that the tenants were rooted out at will" yet looking at the figures it did not drop by much. Would like to hear other opinions on this subject. 3. Lyndall Very interesting information. Would the increase in population in Creich between 1811 and 1821 be due to workers in the Spinningdale factory? (I'm uncertain of my dates.) When I went to check these for a full version, the letter could not be found, as the dates may have been incorrectly transcribed. Has anyone seen this and can they advise? Per below: - Prof Richards: WP Mackay sent a letter to papers in the north of Scot., (John O'Groats Journal, Inverness Courier), espousing the virtues of the new colony. (ref Prof Eric Richards article Highland Emigrants to SA in the 1850's which cites this letter of W.P.'s pg 8 & 9). Prof Richards states ... "Most of the attractions of the antipodes to a prospective Highland migrant, even before the gold fever, were encompassed in a letter written from Adelaide in 1847 by W.P. Mackay who had left Sutherland two years before. His letter was widely publicised in the northern newspapers. He wrote: The time has now arrived when emigrants from Caithness, Sutherland, Ross, Orkney and Zetland, may get a free passage from their own country if they choose ... [to] this country, which is replete with plenty. Here is no starvation, no seizing your goods for taxes, no begging for work, but plenty of good meat at 2d. per lb., bread 6d per loaf. The poorest Zetland fisherman, were he here, could actually live more sumptuously than the best gentry in these islands; for here, on 30s. per week (labourer's wages) a man may have meat every meal, bread cheaper and better than in all Scotland. He spoke glowingly, and for his readers incredibly, of peaches, figs, grapes, melons and wine in profusion. He spelt out the dream further: To the mechanics and farmers of Caithness I would say, take your ploughs, harrows, and farming implements, and tools and come here as quickly as possible. You, in a few years, will be independent. You may buy a section of 80 acres for £80, fence it in, build a house, plough, sow and reap. In a few years, yes, in one year, you may pay your family's expenses with the growth of wheat and potatoes. "You can worship as you think proper here. Religious sects of all kinds and persuasions are on an equal footing. Government will give them aid, if they petition, either for building churches or schools, and also aid teachers. Here are no taxes, the taxes being raised on goods imported." To the Highland Scot in the midst of famine, it must have sounded like paradisiacal music. But in reality it was a description rose-tinted by the current conditions of boom in South Australia, by a man who had landed on his feet and had some capital to give him a start. &c." Prof Richards. (Richards dates this letter as 1849 but says it appeared in 1848? Anyone come across this or know how I might find the full "letter". 3. Hello Frances As always what you put forward is a very good idea. However, I think this has to be a personal choice thing. We do not want to frighten folks away. Most people will have their sources recorded and if they do not come up on the list a quick email will normally bring them although there are a few people who prefer not to give source info or specific fact. We must respect those wishes also. For myself all my work has source codes on it. One of the most noticeable differences today from when I first started out is certificates! I own loads and loads! Used to be the only way to be sure until I learned that there are children in this world who cannot remember their own Mum's maiden name when they go to register her death!! You can't win. I rather like your idea of discussing new sources. This could be most useful to all. We have all learned so much from this list already. The Sutherland Estates book - brilliant. Many people also thought that the 1841 census was the first in Britain - we now know some of the 1811 survived. There was a census every ten years so what became of the 1821 and 31? The Hearth Tax lists of 1691 survived in many places also. Those of you with either my book on Murray Families or my CD will see frequent reference to the 1745 lists. These lists were drawn up in each parish and showed all the able bodied men born between 1680 and 1729. Well worth searching out. The Golspie list is included in the Golspie Story; The lists for Farr are in Population Lists of Strathnaver, Strathy & Strath Halladale, 1667 -1811, by Malcolm Bangor-Jones. Christine -----Original Message----- From: Frances Bishop [mailto:bishad@direct.ca] Sent: Wednesday, April 04, 2001 11:57 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: SCT-SUT - Definition of "SCR"/research sources Hi Christine, Thanks for explaining that "SCR" is short for "Scottish Church Records". It's always a bonus to know which source is being quoted when a kind soul such as yourself posts family details to the list. We rely so heavily on the kindness of strangers. It would be great if everyone who shares information would tell us where they found the details they're quoting - and we did the same in return. That way, everyone would learn more about which sources are actually available. For instance, when baptismal or marriage information is posted to the list, a source note such as "OPR" or "old parish/parochial records" and the LDS film number, if applicable, could be added. I'm willing to get into the habit, when/if I am fortunate enough to have news of this kind to contribute <grin>. Most members of this list already indicate information that was taken from readily accessible sources such as the IGI, Scots Origins, the Family History Library Catalogue at www.familysearch.org and so on - for which I thank them! The Internet is a blessing, but sooner or later most of us must resort to doing our own research (those endless "hours in research rooms" that you mentioned <grin>). Sometimes we share information of unknown origins -- usually because we forgot to record the source when we were making our notes. To increase its value to fellow researchers, we could attach the words: "Source unknown". "Family Story" and "Personal Correspondence" would cover personal sources, which are inaccessible to fellow researchers (generally speaking). "Speculation" or a similar warning should be used for queries in which rough dates are given. Mind you, it's only a problem if someone else chooses to take the dates at face value, enter those dates into a database, then distribute them as fact. (Imagine the brick walls in store for the unwary!) Well, enough of my 'bright ideas' -- and a very long post. With best wishes to all, Frances ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Original message (FROM SCT-SUTHERLAND-D Digest: Volume 01 : Issue 74) >Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 06:45:21 +0100 >From: "Christine Stokes" <chris@northants26.freeserve.co.uk> >To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: RE: SUT - RE: Sutherland, MacKay, Matheson - "SCR" > >SCR = Scottish Church Records >These were what the LDS issued in the days before the IGI became >international. 1. Mathesons in Dornoch
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Frank Wonder if any of this will help you. Firstly Christian Mackay and Alexander Matheson do not appear in the Graveyard inscription book in Dornoch. They will undoubtedly be buried in Dornoch but without a stone the chances of finding where are remote. There are more people buried without stones in Sutherland than with. I would love to be able to give you info on wealthy relatives in Sutherland but would struggle. These were crofting families who did not even own their own piece of land and in many cases survival alone was difficult. At Achavandra, Dornoch, there was a James Matheson who had a son Alexander. This Alexander Matheson married Jane Murray of Achvaich in 1793 and they had a son James, born 1807. This James Matheson married Helen Murray, daughter of Donald Murray and Elizabeth Gordon. James and Helen left Sutherland in 1858 and made their home in New Zealand. A large Matheson family in New Zealand flourishes today. As Achavandra, Achvaich, Skelbo, etc are all in the same area I would think your New Zealand cousins belong somewhere in this family. I cannot give you the name of my New Zealand contact as she has now gone into a care home and no longer wishes to deal with enquiries. Her successor as Clan Matheson Genealogist in New Zealand is a guy called Don something (Matheson?). If any of our New Zealand listers know who I mean perhaps his name will pop up and you can contact him. I have a very large amount of information with all sources etc on these families on my Murray Families CD. Christine --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. Re: Cemeteries in Dornoch
    2. Hi Robin, There are three cemeteries in Dornoch - Golf Course Road Cemetery, St. Barr's (at the Cathedral) and Proncynain which is the newest one. I and many others on the list have the pre 1855 Tombstone Inscriptions book so if you want someone looked up just ask. Sheila Mackay

    3. From Vol 1,p.xii: "Outside the ancient earldom, the estate included all of Assynt, but in Creich, only Invershin and Achinduich, the remainder of this parish being divided between six independent proprietors." Then is gives as a note these six: Sir Charles Ross of Balnagown (Strathoykel) William Baillie (Rosehall) Robert McLeod of Cadboll (Inveran) Hugh Houston (Creich) Dugald Gilchrist (Ospisdale) George Dempster (Skibo) Hope this is of some interest.
