    3. Hi Everyone I just found out that it is possible that my Donald Gibson of Dornach is not related to Thomas Gibson of Dornach after all. I have to Thank everyone who helped me with this search I really appreciated all your help, no wonder we could not find a connection. But my search still has to go on but obviously in a different direction but at this moment I don't know which way to go, so I'll have to think on it. A special Thank you goes out to Christine, you are absolutely invaluable. Thank you Robin

    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** At least one member of the Clarke family went out westwards but I am not aware of any information relating to a connection with a Jones family. There are no family papers for the Clarkes and it is unlikely that you will turn up much in the Sutherland Papers about people working for the Clarkes. The Sutherland Papers contain much about the Clarkes themselves, however. Evander MacIver was factor for the Scourie district of the Sutherland estate from 1846 to 1895. He encouraged many people to emigrate. He wrote a rather tedious volume revealingly entitled Memoirs of a Highland Gentleman (1905). Malcolm Bangor-Jones -----Original Message----- From: Sue Mackay [mailto:sue.mackay@virgin.net] Sent: 19 April 2001 13:23 To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: SUT: Alexander CLARKE of Eriboll ******************************************************************* This email has been received from an external party and has been swept for the presence of computer viruses. ******************************************************************* Can anybody give me more information about Alexander CLARKE of Eriboll, and whether or not he had any connection with a JONES family with lands in Demerera, presumably a sugar plantation in British Guyana? Our family goes back to Annie Fraser ROSS, daughter of Lachlan ROSS and Hannah MATHER. I have in my possession a solid gold signet ring which belonged to Annie, and is beautifully inscribed AFR, then on the reverse the dates 14 Feb 1867, 28 June 1872, 4 May 1879. I now know that these are the dates of death of her younger brother Thomas, her mother and her father, all of whom are buried in Arnaboll Burial Ground. I have not been able to see the grave as yet, but A.S.Cowper gives the MI as Lachlan Ross, native parish of Kincardine, Ross-shire, faithful servant more than 50 years in family Clarkes of Eriboll, d. Thurso 4:5:1879 aged 88. Wife Ann Fraser d.Eriboll 1837 aged 46, second wife Hannah Mather d Eriboll 28:6:1872 aged 57, children Isabella 1829 12, Thomas 14:2:1867 15 Annie's brother James had married and moved to Thurso by 1879 (probably where Lachlan died) and her brothers John Clark ROSS and William Fraser Mather ROSS (the former was the eldest son and presumably given the name Clark as a mark of respect) had emigrated to the USA, so Annie would have been suddenly on her own. She next appears in 1881 on the census as a domestic servant with Mary Elizabeth JONES, born Demerera 'with landed property' in Paddington, London. The following year, in 1882, Annie married Alexander McKAY, a policeman from Tongue, Sutherland. The marriage took place in London and was witnessed by a William Henry JONES. Annie and Alexander settled in Glasgow and called their daughter Mary Elizabeth Jones McKAY. I now speculate that after the death of her father somehow the CLARKE family found her the job in London, and as the family had very little money it seems likely that either Alexander CLARKE or Mary JONES gave her the ring that I now have so that she could remember her family far away in Sutherland if she couldn't visit the grave. Would there be estate papers for Eriboll - if so, where? I would also like to know more about an Evander McIVER. John Clark ROSS (who founded Rossville in Texas) named one of his sons Evander McIver ROSS, supposedly after a mentor who had helped him get established as a blockade runner during the US Civil War and eventually emigrate to Texas. 3. I am interested in any information about Thomas MATHER. He was born in Northumberland and married Jane CRAWFORD on 9 June 1805 (Northumberland IGI, unverified) Shortly afterwards he moved to Sutherland Durness Parish Register gives: Births 1806: Thomas Mather, shepherd in Balmnaceil...& Janet Crawford both from Northumberland, Edward 12 November After Edward came John (1809), James (1811) and then 1814: Thomas Mather, shepherd in Balamulich...& Janet Crawford, Margaret 5 April Almost 9 months to the day after Margaret was born, Hannah MATHER was 'born in adultery' at Balamulich to Thomas MATHER and Kit McKENZIE. Kit was 31, hardly a naive maiden, and Hannah was given the name MATHER and in later years had her cousin John MATHER register the death of her son, so she was openly acknowledged. I think she must have been the housekeeper or some such to whom Thomas turned when his wife was temporarily 'inavailable'!! 9 months later again Janet produced another legitimate son! Hannah's marriage OPR entry lists her father as Thomas MATHER, shepherd of Kerscaig, and her death certificate says her father was the 'manager of a sheep farm'. Does anyone recognise the names as I would like to know who Thomas' employer was and whether there would be any estate records. I have no idea where or when he died. Sue Mackay

    1. Donald Gunn(s)
    2. Joan & Wayne Wilton
    3. My Donald Gunn was 69 years old when he left Scotland for the Selkirk Settlement in Manitoba, Canada on the second load of immigrants bound for that place. They sailed from Dornoch. The Prince of Wales passenger list says he was a shoemaker. He and his children who were part of the group who left Manitoba for Elgin. county, and the Talbot Settlement in Ontario are my ancestors. Later in Elgin co., no less than 4 Donald Gunns are to be found who are first cousins -- to confuse matters further, there were 2 Donald A Gunns. However, there was a different Donald Gunn who remained at the Red River Settlement. He was reputed to be a botonist and went on to be one of the first members of the Manitoba Legislature. I'm typing this from memory which is why it's so sketchy. Hope it helps. Joan Wilton

    1. Esther Gunn
    2. Cheryll, You may well be right, the Esther Gunn I am interested in was born on 24th April, 1807, Kildonan, to Donald Gunn and Esther Sutherland. She married Anderson Murray on 25 Feb, 1830 in Loth, Esther died in 1839 and is buried in Loth cemetary. I have no information on her parents other than their names, so far have been researching the Murrays. If you know for sure that the Donald Gunn that Rena was talking about is a different one, then I will have to look again for her parents. Thanks for taking the time to let me know, you may have saved me a lot of repeat research. Catherine

    3. Hi Angi, I have not followed-up my MacKay ancestors, mainly because Durness is in "MacKay country" and distinguishing between MacKays with the same christian name seemed a daunting task. However, my gg grandmother was Henrietta (Henny) MacKay b.1824 to John MacKay and Flora ?? (probably Flora Sutherland, who had a daughter Henny McKay on Jan 14, 1824. Siblings: Christian c. 16 Sept 1819 and Isobell c. 20 August 1821. John and Flora married June 2, 1815 in Durness.) My Henny MacKay married Donald Morrison in Durness, September 24, 1843 and they are buried at Balnakeil. By 1891, they were living on a croft at Lerin, where my cousin now lives. 3. Hi folks At the risk of becoming boring on this virus issue I am posting this email which has come in from one of our members. It is vitally important that we all understand DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS. Ensure your virus checker is up to date. Most, if not all the companies like Norton, etc. have already put out an update on this virus. If you do not have a virus checker then please, please, go get one. There is a very good absolutely free one at http://www.grisoft.com Christine Dear Christine, Unfortunately, this particular virus is one which RootsWeb subscribers *should* be worried about! Although the virus cannot be transmitted via RootsWeb itself, it can be (and IS being) transmitted to subscribers via the infected system of another subscriber. The virus picks up addresses from unread e-mails and replies to them using the same subject line and has the same message in the body, plus the phrase "please look to attachment". Today it arrived at my place in response to a message which I had posted to the Sussex-plus list. Fortunately, I was on the alert and immediately deleted the thing. There have been postings from people who have been caught on the Genanz list, the Aus-Qld list, and, of all places, on the Virus-discussion list! It is very apparent that many RootsWeb subscribers have caught this evil thing. Here's the page from the Symantec site which explains just how insidious this virus is: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/w32.badtrans.13312@mm.html McAfee also has a full description of this latest nasty as, I'm sure, will all the anti virus companies. Rather than telling people not to panic, I think that it would be more advisable to suggest to people NOT to open any attachments and to ensure that their AV is right up to date. 2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** The Ross of Balnagown collection is not only large, it contains large sections which are uncatalogued, especially the earlier material. However, one Mr McGill did produce 2 volumes of documents in about 1909 and 1911 titled Old-Ross-shire. They draw on the Balnagown Papers and also Tain documents and include material which has now disappeared. The volumes contain a mine of information on the N Highlands. Apart from some legal material, there is, as far as I'm aware, no Matheson of Ardross archive. It appears that papers were destroyed. The family has, of course, no link with earlier Ardross families. 3. Hello Bob, You'll be pleased to know that the CD does contain an entry for your Euphemia DOUGLAS and Stephen CLARK. In my previous posting on this subject, I think that I omitted to mention that MACKENZIE families also feature. I say...go for it! I'm sure that you will have no regrets. :o) Lyndall Canberra, Oz. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi Lyndall...or whoever else on the list that can give me an answer, I would buy this CD in a minute if Euphemia Douglas, born about 1792 "in the Orkney Islands" who married Stephen Clark in about 1816 [no later than 1817], was on that CD. Why? One, I'm desperate for a clue and two, seven of their kids were born in Golspie. Maybe they went "home" to Golspie from England until 1832 before sailing to Quebec. No, I don't know their parents' names. I would be forever indebted if someone would peep into that CD and give me a sign. Thanks, Bob Eckerman On Thu, 19 Apr 2001 02:39:02 +1000 "Lyndall" <lyfrah@goldweb.com.au> writes: Hello everyone, Tuesday's post brought me something wonderful - a copy of the CD, "Families of Sutherland - a Genealogical Study" This CD is packed with info; in addition to raw data about members of the GRANT, ANDERSON, GORDON, DUFF, DOUGLAS, and, of course, MURRAY families, there are lots of interesting personal snippets about individuals. In addition, there are maps and articles about the more general history of Sutherland. I have so far only spent a couple of hours happily exploring this CD and have much more to explore. Please note that I have no connection with this product; I am merely a very satisfied user, who believes that I have received excellent value for money.
