I hope I didn't confuse everyone. The Donald Gunn who married Margaret Swain was the Donald Gunn who remained in Red River Settlement. I know it's not grammatically correct, but the (s) is meant to indicate more than one Donald Gunn at the Selkirk Settlement, Manitoba. I have as his wife only Janet and that she died c 1814, Canada. The source of much of my information stems from a newspaper interview of 1906 given by the above Donald's very elderly grandson living in Elgin Co. Facts nearly a hundred years old were related to in that interview with D A Gunn, information that I now suspect was only as accurate as the memories of the people who handed the tales down from one generation to another. That newspaper account said Donald and Janet Gunn were the parents of 9 children, William being the eldest and who refused to take his turn in the British military and may have been a contributing factor in the Gunn's decision to leave Scotland. A younger brother, Alex or Alec, stepped in and took William's place. Angus was already a young married man; Benjamin came out to Manitoba with the Hudson's Bay Co.; Katherine Gunn died at Ft. Churchill upon the Prince of Wales putting in there to put sick passengers and sailors off the ship and George. There are 11 children in total who could be Donald and Janet's children found in the IGI records: including those already named, Esther, Margaret, Christian and Helen. I never considered Robert Gunn the piper from the ship's passenger list their child, or his sister Mary, because of their reputed Irish birth. I haven't had time to check my sources yet for where I found that information. But in light of Rena's information about the Robert Gunn who died at the RR Settlement, I will have to take another look at that; one more possible son, Donald. I have as Angus' wife, Janet Matheson; Benjamin Gunn' wife Eliza Currie; George' #1Jane ____, #2Margaret also unkown; Christian/Christina mar Charles McBeath. Some of the birthdates I have, I now think must be christening dates and that the children may've been older than infants and toddlers at the time. How common might it have been in the Highlands of the late 1700s and early 1800s to baptize children of some age? I have no record beyond his name and placement in the family, of William Gunn nor any military records of Alec/Alex who was probably Alexander. Some day when I have more time, I will transcribe the 1906 newspaper interview for the list if it will help anyone track a relative -- and if you'd like me to do it Joan Wilton
I was interested to read the section on Golspie in Chris and Linda's 'Highland Hearts' site. Many years ago I bought a book in a secondhand bookshop called 'Golspie - Contributions to its Folklore'. This book, by the then librarian of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, E.W.B. Nicholson, has much more than folklore in it --- historical and pre-historical background, languages, children's games and singing games, surnames, etc. etc. I wonder if the Opies ever saw it. The children who contributed their games, stories and superstitions are named--- Nicholson was there in the early 1890s (book published 1897). One rhyme goes as follows: I've a lad at Golspie; I've a lad at sea: I've a lad at Golspie, and his number is twenty-three. Nicholson points out that the houses in Golspie are not numbered, but presumably they did have numbers in estate records, as shown in the Highland Hearts list; would these have been known by the tenants/occupiers? Could someone tell me if this book is in Golspie Library? If not, and if I can bear to part with it, I feel I should send the book there. (Hope I won't have to!) I'm assuming the library is a venerable institution with "serious" books! Sara
Hi everyone, I have been searching for Christina or Christian Murray's birth for some time now and have always hit a solid wall of brick. Today on the gro I played a long shot and low and behold she appears (I HOPE). Christina married Duncan Munro in Dornoch circa 1796 and had a son John Munro born Dornoch 1799. Now John was Duncan's fathers name, and since Neill was her second son I punched in Christian Murray and father Neill Murray and it listed her as being born in Kilcalmonell/Kilberry in March 1780. It listed her mother as Mary Mccarrnak. I can find nothing for that surname. Does anyone have any guesses as to what it might be. Could this be my Christian Murray???Only time can tell? Carolyn

Hi Joan Do you have a name for the wife of this Donald Gunn? Christine -----Original Message----- From: Joan & Wayne Wilton [mailto:panther@elgin.net] Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2001 6:20 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Donald Gunn(s) My Donald Gunn was 69 years old when he left Scotland for the Selkirk Settlement in Manitoba, Canada on the second load of immigrants bound for that place. They sailed from Dornoch. The Prince of Wales passenger list says he was a shoemaker. He and his children who were part of the group who left Manitoba for Elgin. county, and the Talbot Settlement in Ontario are my ancestors. Later in Elgin co., no less than 4 Donald Gunns are to be found who are first cousins -- to confuse matters further, there were 2 Donald A Gunns. However, there was a different Donald Gunn who remained at the Red River Settlement. He was reputed to be a botonist and went on to be one of the first members of the Manitoba Legislature. I'm typing this from memory which is why it's so sketchy. Hope it helps. Joan Wilton ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== You may, at times, wish to check out previous messages to this list. Hi Christine, The reference to Fiddlag Gordon is short just one paragraph. "Closely associated with all my recollections of olden times at Kildonan, is an individual who largely contributed to our amusement. She was a Mrs. GORDON who died at Golspie, a daughter of the Rev. MURDO MACDONALD of Durness. She was then a widow with an only daughter called PEGGY. Inheriting her father's taste for music, she played beautifully on the violin, and was a periodical visitor, and an almost constant residenter at the houses of the Sutherland gentry. Many a time and oft have we tripped it to her heart-and-heel-stirring reels and strathspeys in the low easter-room at the manse at Kildonan. She was universally known under the name "Fiddlag". Her fiddle was her god. When on her death-bed nearly her last words were to "spread a cloth over the fiddle." When told that it was her soul that should then be her chief concern, and not her fiddle, she replied, "O I leave all these good things, as I ever did, to the worthy man, Mr. KEITH." Mem. Dom. (1889), page 136. Hi Christine Thank you very much for all those Gordon's. It will take me a while to digest it. I will get in touch with the NZ lot as soon as I can. I can't immediately see his address in your letter. I will be busy for the next couple of weeks with one of my English branches, which is bearing fruit too. It never rains but it pours! ! Shirley
