    1. RE: OPR for Dornoch

    3. Hi again Meant to add that neither Donald or Janet appear on the 1881 census in Sutherland. Christine -----Original Message----- From: Christine Stokes [mailto:chris@northants26.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: Monday, April 23, 2001 7:39 AM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: OPR for Dornoch Hi Robin The OPR should be available through your local LDS on order. Failing that you can access it through the GRO web site but you do have to pay for this. I have seen the OPR for Donald's marriage and the IGI for his children as follows: Janet Mackay in Strath Achvaich and Donald Gibson at Skibo, married in Dornoch on 3 December 1823 (OPR). They had the following children (GIBSON) born in Dornoch (IGI): Catherine, born 9 February 1824; Alexander, born 28 August 1825; Marion, born 18 October 1826; Margaret, born 1828; Joanna, born 25 February 1830; Helen, born 8 November 1832 and Mary, born 22 October 1835. The OPR will give you no more on the marriage than what is above. It will tell you exactly where in Dornoch the children were born and may give you Donald's employment but that is a big may! What you really need is the census records after 1861 which tell you where a person was born. You can access those at your local LDS also. I think you have to order the film. If Donald died after 1855 in Scotland he will have an official death certificate. This will give you the names of his parents. You could look for this on the GRO web site but again it can be expensive. Do you have any idea when or where he may have died? 3. Thankyou so much for this Rena. Should be able to put up some info on this family as soon as time allows. Hi Christine, A list member wrote to me, tongue-in-cheek, asking that I take my time in preparing the notes on her family. The Andersons and Gordons were not the families of interest to her but I certainly had to write slowly in organizing this information. I found this section confusing and was forced to analyze Sage's sentences in order to understand them. Here's what he said: "About the middle of summer, after I returned from Stempster, two young female relatives of ours paid us a visit, Miss ALEXA ANDERSON and Miss FAIRLY GORDON. LEXY ANDERSON was the daughter of Mr. JAMES ANDERSON, brother of the overseer of the salmon-fishings at Invershin. He first held the farm of Rispond in the Reay Country, where he not only carried on agricultural but also commercial speculations, dealt much in the cod fishery, in which he employed much shipping, and for the accommodation of which he built a pier and formed a village at Rispond. Mr. Anderson afterwards leased the farm of Ausdale in Caithness from Sir John Sinclair. After building upon it a most substantial dwelling- house, office-houses, sheep-fanks or folds, and cultivating not a little of the surrounding moor, he gave it up in disgust and took a farm in the Orkneys, which, in a few years thereafter, he also relinquished and then retired to his native county to end his days. He was thrice married. Of his first wife I know nothing. His second wife was my cousin-germain, FAIRLY GORDON of Clerkhill, daughter of GEORGE GORDON of Pulrossie. By her he had a son CHARLES who entered the army, also a son THOMAS who resides at Stromness, a decidedly pious man. Mr. Anderson's only daughter by this marriage was ALEXA, who, along with FAIRLY GORDON, second daughter of Captain WILLIAM GORDON of Clerkhill, was our visitant at Kildonan. She was exceedingly good-humoured, and in her manners very pleasing and attractive." Mem. Dom. (1889), pp 240-241. Pop quiz: Did Sage mean that Alexa or Fairly Gordon was good-humoured? 3. As always during a virus scare there are silly people who think they should 'join in'! This morning a message arrived warning me that I had been sent the virus in what turned out to be a totally harmless email. Time to put an end to all this virus talk on the list. Enough to frighten people away. For the last time: make sure you have a virus programme; make sure you update it when you know there is a virus out there and delete files from anyone when you do not know who sent it. Now back to family history - it is much more fun! Christine -----Original Message----- From: I.L.Singleton [mailto:rena@pathtech.org] Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2001 1:12 AM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Virus Checkers Having been informed that the Norton program "guaranteed" that a private email that I had sent contained a virus, I re-scanned my files using my McAfee program. No virus was detected. I also went to the McAfee site (mentioned in Sue MacKay's note) for their free on-line virus scan (It seemed like hours and involved some 47,000 files). Again, no virus was detected. With my brother's consent, I sent him an email, asking him to check it through his Norton program. No virus. But, he said, this was not the email that I had sent to my contact and asked that I forward it to him. I did so. It was a text file and contained no attachments. No virus. I do not use Microsoft Outlook. I NEVER, ever open ".exe" files. I rarely open any attachments unless they are jpegs and then only if I know the sender. I could not understand how my program might have been infected and, in fact, the tests indicate it is not. It seems that some warnings are "false positives". But, as always, "better safe than sorry". 1. RE: Memorabilia Domestica, Chapter 13.
    2. I.L.Singleton
    3. 1. Re: Virus Checkers
    2. I.L.Singleton
    3. Having been informed that the Norton program "guaranteed" that a private email that I had sent contained a virus, I re-scanned my files using my McAfee program. 3. Hello Marla, The names for which there are specific sections on this CD are MURRAY, MACKAY, MACKENZIE, GRANT, ANDERSON, GORDON, DUFF, and DOUGLAS. Other names are to be found if they married into anyone of these lines. However, there is so much data on this CD, that it would take me hours, which I don't have to spare, hunting out individuals. The Cd is not expensive, and I consider it to be a worthwhile investment. You will be able to learn more by going to www.highlandhearts.com Sorry that I didn't post this URL earlier, but the link which I had stored in my favourites was broken. I've just done a google search and have updated my favourites list, so now , all is well. Lyndall Canberra, Australia ----- Original Message ----- Hi Lyndall Are the Alexander & Christian McBeth/ MacBeth/McBeath families of Sutherlandshire on the CD? I would buy it also if my GUNN & SUTHERLAND families are there. I would like to have an order form for this CD so will have to contact Highland Heart. Marla in BC Canada

    2. Sue Mackay
    3. Just to re-iterate what Christine said, if you do not have a virus checker you should a) get one immediately b) update it on-line at least once a week - last week alone saw 26 new viruses added to the list Also go for either Norton or McAffee. I had a brand new computer last year which came complete with a virus checker called PC-Cillin, and it failed to protect me from the Kakworm, which had already been known about for 6 months at the time I bought the computer. By the way, the dreaded Kakworm is about again and my Norton checker has intercepted three infected e-mails from mailing lists recently (not the Sutherland list). It is particularly nasty because you do not have to open an attachment or even click on the e-mail to be infected, you only need to download the e-mail. It attacks users of Outlook Express (I never use OE now) and sets itself up as a default signature, which is INVISIBLE and is sent out with every message you send, so that you infect people in all innocence. With Eudora (the e-mail program I now use) you can immediately see that the message takes up far more bytes than the text should warrant, but with OE there is no clue as to what size the incoming message is and everything seems to be normal. To check whether your computer is infected press Start/Find/Files and type in KAK.HTA. If you have this file you are infected, and deleting the file is insufficient as it will simply return when you boot up the computer again. If anyone gets it and needs step by step instructions on permanently removing it let me know. Sue Mackay

    3. Thanks very much for doing this Cathy. I am interested in the family of Donald "Mor" McDonald. His daughter Jessie (b. 1845) married Roderick Campbell (b. 1842, Isle of Lewis, R&C).
