    1. Sutherland Papers
    2. Barbara Stirling
    3. Hello List, Requests a few weeks ago re Sutherland Estate Papers & I have finally located my info. If you orde ficher No. 6028792 from LDS Family History Centres this will give you a full cover of the bundles with explanations. There are I believe more than one fiche but are very cheap to hire. I have written off them that " After death of 2nd Duke in 1861, all papers were deposited in the National Library of Scotland by the Countess." There seems to be a considerable amount of these bundles, some of which were used or referred to by Sir William Fraser for his Sutherland Book.[This book available at FHC on microfilm]. As I am descended from James, 5th Lord Duffus[yes, he had a considerable number of "natural" children he owned up to] I was particularly interested in the Skelbo & Duffus papers. Not that from here in New Zealand I can access them. There is Household & Personals. Estate Management Tacks. Legal Papers Titles Estate Plans Misc. Under Estate Plans I have noted -box 3587. Vol.27. Slelbo Farms 1778. Box 135, Factors vouchers for Skelbo. 1720-27 + 1726-34 + 1756-86. There are so many things i.e Box 5- 1015 & 1016 Sutherland Removals 1819-1820 +1820. Theres wadsets.inventories of tacks, proposed purchase of Skibo, sequestration of Skibo. John 15th Earl versus Skibo tenants 1716. Dornoch has 6 boxes. Other areas & names. Langwell & Kildonan Marches. Geanies, Clyne,Dunrobin,Tongue,Scourie, rentals. Letters of Sutherland Removals, Emigration South, even Removals in Coigach & Loch Broom 1853.. Under Military - Lists of able bodied men in Sutherland Parished 1745. Plus Sutherland Volunteers & militia & on it goes. Fair makes you drool!!!. Have fun, Barbara

    2. Ian Morrison
    3. Hi Angi, I have been trying to locate Achins ( of Cnoc Breac) on the map. Do you know where it is/was? Keep in mind that I have a transcription of the Durness OPR from 1764 to 1814, in which many of the patronymics are recorded. This sometimes helps in identifying parents. Regards, Ian ----- Original Message ----- From: Angela Lamb Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2001 10:58 AM To: Ian Morrison; SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: My family interests - Durness Dear Ian, I see what you mean having transcribed a fair bit of the census: out of 417, top surnames are MacKay 111, Morrison 39, Campbell 34, Sutherland 29, Munro 22, McDonald 21, McLeod 21, Swanson 16, Gunn 14, Levy 10, McIntosh 10 I've transcribed Sangobeg, Lerin, Smoo, Sangomore, Achins, Glebe, Balnakiel, Balvoolich. Durine is to come and I probably end up doing the whole parish in an attempt to sort out my MacKays and Sutherlands. From: "Ian Morrison" <ianmorrison@msn.com> > I have not followed-up my MacKay ancestors, mainly because Durness is in "MacKay country" and distinguishing between MacKays with the same christian name seemed a daunting task. However, my gg grandmother was Henrietta (Henny) MacKay b.1824 to John MacKay and Flora ?? (probably Flora Sutherland, who had a daughter Henny McKay on Jan 14, 1824. Siblings: Christian c. 16 Sept 1819 and Isobell c. 20 August 1821. John and Flora married June 2, 1815 in Durness.) > > My Henny MacKay married Donald Morrison in Durness, September 24, 1843 and they are buried at Balnakeil. By 1891, they were living on a croft at Lerin, where my cousin now lives. I don't these on the census but haven't looked that closely. Many Morrisons too! 2. Bill Dean Myatt
    3. Between 1923-78 the Beltona record label issued over 3000 x 78-rpm records as well as LPs and EPs. Most of these were by Scottish artists and I am anxious to find out something of their lives and careers. Scottish popular culture as represented on commercial gramophone records has been almost totally ignored and my researches aim to rectify this state of affairs. Visit my web site at www.beltonaproject.co.uk for a complete list of artists and more details of the project. I am always willing to help anyone with a query about a 78rpm record of Scottish interest (i.e When was it recorded?) Bill Dean-Myatt. bill@beltonaproject.co.uk

    1. RE: Memorabilia Domestica, Chapter 13.
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hello This is a little bit of info on the Fairly Gordon of which Sage wrote: James Anderson in Kealdale, Durness, married firstly Ann Innes (1751-1783). He and Ann had at least one child: WILLIAM, born 1 October 1780 Durness (IGI). Following Ann's death in 1783 James then married Fairly Gordon (born circa 1765), a widow. This marriage took place on 23 January 1784 in Durness (IGI). They had the following children born in Durness (IGI): CHARLES, born 9 December 1784; THOMAS, born 26 May 1786; JOHN, born 9 August 1787; ALEXIE, born 30 June 1789 and JOSEPH, born 1 July 1790. Fairly Gordon died the day her baby Joseph was born. She is buried with Ann Innes in Balnakeil, Durness (GY202/149). I believe James then married again to Barbara Gordon, possibly another widow: Barbara is referred to on the Scottish Church Records as Mrs Barbara Gordon. She and James Anderson married on 9 November 1793 in Durness (SCR). They had the following children born in Durness (SCR): ELISABETH, born 22 October 1794; HUGHINA, born 7 March 1796 and her twin MARGARET; ANN, born 8 February 1798; GEORGINA MACKAY, born 8 June 1799; CAROLINE, born 6 May 1801 and RUPART, born 9 November 1802. Life was not easy then. Hi Christine, A list member wrote to me, tongue-in-cheek, asking that I take my time in preparing the notes on her family. The Andersons and Gordons were not the families of interest to her but I certainly had to write slowly in organizing this information. I found this section confusing and was forced to analyze Sage's sentences in order to understand them. Here's what he said: "About the middle of summer, after I returned from Stempster, two young female relatives of ours paid us a visit, Miss ALEXA ANDERSON and Miss FAIRLY GORDON. LEXY ANDERSON was the daughter of Mr. JAMES ANDERSON, brother of the overseer of the salmon-fishings at Invershin. He first held the farm of Rispond in the Reay Country, where he not only carried on agricultural but also commercial speculations, dealt much in the cod fishery, in which he employed much shipping, and for the accommodation of which he built a pier and formed a village at Rispond. Mr. Anderson afterwards leased the farm of Ausdale in Caithness from Sir John Sinclair. After building upon it a most substantial dwelling- house, office-houses, sheep-fanks or folds, and cultivating not a little of the surrounding moor, he gave it up in disgust and took a farm in the Orkneys, which, in a few years thereafter, he also relinquished and then retired to his native county to end his days. He was thrice married. Of his first wife I know nothing. His second wife was my cousin-germain, FAIRLY GORDON of Clerkhill, daughter of GEORGE GORDON of Pulrossie. By her he had a son CHARLES who entered the army, also a son THOMAS who resides at Stromness, a decidedly pious man. Mr. Anderson's only daughter by this marriage was ALEXA, who, along with FAIRLY GORDON, second daughter of Captain WILLIAM GORDON of Clerkhill, was our visitant at Kildonan. She was exceedingly good-humoured, and in her manners very pleasing and attractive." Mem. Dom. (1889), pp 240-241. Pop quiz: Did Sage mean that Alexa or Fairly Gordon was good-humoured?
