    1. Found Gibsons of dornoch
    2. Robin Van Belleghem
    3. Hi Christine and Everyone I found the Gibsons of Dornoch, they must have moved to ROC sometime between 1841 and 1851. But still no information about Donald, I say the man was elusive. Now the question I have is according to the 1851 census, it has my Janet MacKay as 55 born in Dornoch, so this would make her birth in around 1796 and not in 1792. Is it possible that she may not be David MacKay and Marran McIntosh's daughter or could the 1851 census be wrong? I looked in the IGI and found a Jannet MacKay born 1796 in Dornoch to Robert MacKay and Eliza Dunbar and also a Jannet christened in 1797 in Dornoch to Andrew MacKay and Margt MacKay, there could be more but these are the only ones that say Dornoch. How can I tell if one of these are her parents? Here is the 1851 census for the Gibsons, any help would be appreciated.. 1851 Fearn 5.26 Balmuchie. Janet MacKay, Head, Widow, 55, Spinner of Hemp, b. Sutherland, Dornoch. Alexander Gibson, Son, Unmarried, 24, Agricultural Labourer, b. Sutherland, Dornoch. Joanna Gibson, Daughter, Unmarried, 20, Farm Servant, b. Sutherland, Dornoch. Thank You Robin

    3. Hi everyone I am interested in the McKay/Sutherland families as well. Am trying to locate an Alexander McKay in the older age range i.e. 43-53 years. 3. It was suggested to me that I inquire on this site for information on my family. I'm looking in the Inverness area. I realize this is the Sutherland area but possibly someone may have some information that could help. I'm looking for the parents of John McCay/MacKay born approximately 1750-60's. He was married in Dores, Inverness in 1775. His children were born in Boleskine so that possibility exists that he was also, however, being married in Dores also lends a possibility. I went through the IGI in the LDS library yesterday but can't find any information on his birth only marriage and his children. Can anyone lend a hand with helping me solve this problem. I would be most appreciative. Sincerely Bella Christensen

    1. RE: Parish Records
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hi Cathy The alias which you say is like Latin is normally a patryionic in Gaelic. For those lucky enough to read these a patryionic gives genealogy a head start. Transcribed they usually read something like John, son of Fred, son of Joe, etc. Hopefully another person who understands these better than I do will respond. There are many items like this on the parish registers of the northern parishes particularly Farr. Each time I have read them I have wished I knew the Gaelic! Hope this helps a little. 2. Christine Stokes
    3. Frank There is no Robert Turner born in March 1854 anywhere in Scotland on the IGI. There was a Robert Turner born in Edinburgh on 20 Jan 1855 to James Turner and Margaret Gilbert. As official registration did not begin until 1 Jan 1855 there is always the chance that his parents did not have him christened and therefore will be no record of him. Best bet is the 1861 census if they would still have been in Edinburgh. If you orde ficher No. 6028792 from LDS Family History Centres this will give you a full cover of the bundles with explanations. There are I believe more than one fiche but are very cheap to hire. I have written off them that " After death of 2nd Duke in 1861, all papers were deposited in the National Library of Scotland by the Countess." There seems to be a considerable amount of these bundles, some of which were used or referred to by Sir William Fraser for his Sutherland Book.[This book available at FHC on microfilm]. As I am descended from James, 5th Lord Duffus[yes, he had a considerable number of "natural" children he owned up to] I was particularly interested in the Skelbo & Duffus papers. Not that from here in New Zealand I can access them. There is Household & Personals. Estate Management Tacks. Legal Papers Titles Estate Plans Misc. Under Estate Plans I have noted -box 3587. Vol.27. The enumerator descriptions say: Part of the civil parish of Durness, and of the School Board district of Durness, is bounded on the south by the boundary of Keoldale farm but including Achins, on the west by the Kyle of Durness, on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the east by a line from the sea along the march separating Durine from Sangomore on to Loch Calladale. This is called the Durine district and includes Achins [6 households], Glebe [2 including the manse], Balnakiel [4 farm house, grieve's house and manager's house], Balvoolich [7] and Durine [31 including hotel and school house]. (They are listed in that order) Part of the civil parish of Durness, and of the School Board district of Durness is bounded on the West by a line from the sea along the march separating Durine from Sangomore on to Loch Cealladale, on the South by the Keodale march dyke on to the Ceannabuinn Hills, on the East by the Ceannabinn Hills on to the sea, and on the north by the Atlantic Ocean. This is called Sango district and includes Sangomore [34], Smoo [11 including Smooside], Lerin [13], Sangobeg [12], and Ceannbuinn [1]. (order is Ceannbuinn, Sangobeg, Lerin, Smoo, Sangomore) > Keep in mind that I have a transcription of the Durness OPR from 1764 to 1814, in which many of the patronymics are recorded. This sometimes helps in identifying parents. I'm not sure what you mean by patronymics in this context? I'm sort of new to Gaelic culture/naming. Regards Angi

    3. Dear Ian, I see what you mean having transcribed a fair bit of the census: out of 417, top surnames are MacKay 111, Morrison 39, Campbell 34, Sutherland 29, Munro 22, McDonald 21, McLeod 21, Swanson 16, Gunn 14, Levy 10, McIntosh 10 I've transcribed Sangobeg, Lerin, Smoo, Sangomore, Achins, Glebe, Balnakiel, Balvoolich. Durine is to come and I probably end up doing the whole parish in an attempt to sort out my MacKays and Sutherlands. From: "Ian Morrison" <ianmorrison@msn.com> > I have not followed-up my MacKay ancestors, mainly because Durness is in "MacKay country" and distinguishing between MacKays with the same christian name seemed a daunting task. However, my gg grandmother was Henrietta (Henny) MacKay b.1824 to John MacKay and Flora ?? (probably Flora Sutherland, who had a daughter Henny McKay on Jan 14, 1824. Siblings: Christian c. 16 Sept 1819 and Isobell c. 20 August 1821. John and Flora married June 2, 1815 in Durness.) > > My Henny MacKay married Donald Morrison in Durness, September 24, 1843 and they are buried at Balnakeil. By 1891, they were living on a croft at Lerin, where my cousin now lives. I don't these on the census but haven't looked that closely. Many Morrisons too! Regards Angi
