    3. Hi Chris, I was an inaugural reader. Just to freshen your recollection...Stephen Clarke, Culmaily shepherd, wife Euphemia Douglas, 9 kids by the time they left for Canada in about 1832. They arrived at Culmaily from England abt 1820. If you come across the itty-bittiest mention of them it would be just like eating candy. Before I go I want to say that you are like no other webmaster I know about. You participate right in there with us and I appreciate that. 1. RE: Lord Reays County
    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** Generally speaking Lord Reay's country, or more usually the Reay country, refers to the Reay estate as it was in the 18th century - essentially the parishes of Eddrachillis, Durness and Tongue. However, Strathnaver in the parish of Farr had belonged to Lord Reay but was acquired by the Earls of Sutherland - in stages - culminating in 1718. Strathy in the parish of Farr was a separate Mackay property as was the estate of Bighouse or Strath Halladale in the parish of Reay. Sometimes a person is described as coming from the Reay country when they came from the parish of Farr. Malcolm Bangor-Jones -----Original Message----- From: T.Knapp [mailto:theresa.knapp@sympatico.ca] Sent: 03 May 2001 00:12 To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Lord Reays County ******************************************************************* This email has been received from an external party and has been swept for the presence of computer viruses. ******************************************************************* Can someone tell me exactly where Lord Reays County was located...I am searching for info. on: (this is said by Spencer Sutherland 1865)...John Gordon, my grandfather married Jane McKay, daughter of John McKay, taxman of Meikleferry by whom were born sons, Alex, John, Robert, Joseph, and three more, and daughters, one, Christina Gordon, my mother. Four of John Gordon's sons died in infancy in - - - while on a contemplated voyage to America, shipwrecked in - - - - - -. Alexander Gordon, son of above John Gordon was a planter in the island of Jamaica during - - - war. Was hired by the planters of the Island. then - - - - to drive back the Maroons. He entered into a contract to finish the war in a certain time ( in partnership with an English countryman named Calderwood). The rebels were driven back in much less time than stipulated. He was paid his amount, sold his plantation, left the island in 1800 with a Captain Logan in a barque and all hands except the Captain were lost off the Bahama Islands by a water spout. I saw the Captain, he came to Meikleferry to tell us he was saved by sticking to a plank five days. He said "If any part of the Atlantic ought to be dried it was that part where his vessel laid, so valuable was the cargo aboard in Spi - - - -". John Gordon, brother of Alexander went to the island of Martnique, became a planter there in company with 2 gentlemen of the same name. Gordon didn't think they were any relation. They made a fraction between them - the longest lived was to become heir to their joint property. One of the Gordon's died, my uncle and the other on his death split partnership and my uncle got money for his part of the plantation either murdered or left the island, nothing more was heard of him. We made inquiries in - - - - to the McKays, his cousins, and the above was all the information we could get. The last that was seen of him was walking in the - - - wharf on a - - -. This was about the year 1802. Robert, the older brother of the above also went to Martinique and died after of yellow fever. Neither of the three brothers were married to my knowledge. The other daughter of James(John) was Christina Gordon, my mother who married Donald Sutherland, a taxman of Meikleferry who died in 1798. She survived my father, and later married Capt. George Munro. He was previously married to Mary Matheson, daughter of Dr. Matheson on In(ner)? Rosshire. Their children, John and Annie both died. John died in the West Indies, Annie died in Ireland. Any information on these families would be truly appreciated. Theresa Coleman ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== You may, at times, wish to check out previous messages to this list. 1. Ardachu, Rogart
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hello list My Mackenzie family and some of my Mackays lived at Achevely, Achillie, Ardochie, Ardachu, Ardchu. My great, great, great grandparents were Kenneth Mackenzie, son of Colin Mackenzie and Barbara Gordon, and Mary Jenny. Kenneth’s twin sons, William and Colin, were born at Achevely, Rogart. His daughters, Jane and Barbara were then born in Ardchue. In 1813 he was again in Achevely where his son Angus was born according to the Old Parish Records. Enquiries in Sutherland brought the following information regarding Achevely: In 1938 and in records in the Sutherland Estate Office the precise place was written as Acheillie. 50 years prior to that it was written as Achillie. In 1833 it was written as Achvalie or Achvelly. It has been proven that Achavelly and Acheveby are one and the same place through the use of tenant’s names in the Estate office. On old maps this spot is named Acheileidh. In 1750 it was written Achvilie, and in the 1764 records it is Echevilie. A croft on the spot is known as Inshure, Inschure, Inchure. Nearby is Achu, Ardchu, Ardachue. It has been assumed that the family did in fact not move. The 1881 census in Rogart shows Angus Mackenzie, son of Kenneth and Mary, as tenant of ten acres at Ardochie. Living with him was his sister, Susanna, a spinster, and his nephew William Mackenzie, son of his brother, John. Was Ardochie Ardchue? In 1750 Ardchu did not exist but Inchoraig did. Inchoraig and Inschure – same place? The modern map shows only Ardochu, Rogart. I believe this is the spot where not only Ardachue and Ardochy stood but also Inchoraig and Achevely. From the Estate Papers we know that there were quite a few families at Ardchu, or Ardachu as it was then written, in 1825. Niel Mackay, John Murray, Niel Sutherland, William Sutherland, James Campbell, Roderick Macdonald, Hugh Mackay, Kenneth Mackenzie and William Murray, were all crofting in Ardchu. I have information on some of these families but would love to find out about the James Campbell family. Anyone know them? With so much marrying within the small communities of Sutherland many of these families link together. Would be interesting to know what became of them. 3. Tacksman: one who holds a tack or lease of land from another; a tenant who paid his rent in money or kind often to a Highland chief and obtained a larger rent in money or kind from peasants, living on the difference between the two. 'Kind' could be, meal, lambs, butter, cheese, capons, hens, chickens, eggs and tallow." (A Scots Agricultural Glossary) Chambers Eng Dic suggests that the word 'tack' - a tenure or lease, comes from Scots 'tak' = 'take'. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Meibusch" <raigmore@tmba.design.net.au> To: <SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2001 12:23 AM Subject: tacksman > Would SKS be able to explain the term tacksman. 2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** In the Highlands there were, to simplify drastically, small tenants and large tenants. The large tenants were known as tacksmen. The word derives from the Scots word tack, meaning a lease. It should not be assumed, however, that because a man is designated a tacksman, that he has a lease (occasionally one comes across a tackswoman - usually a widow) The term was more an indication of status, largely based on the size of the holding. Tacksmen often possessed several farms, some held whole districts. They farmed some land themselves and sublet the rest to subtenants. In the past the tacksmen provided the officers for the clan as a military unit and this continued when landlords raised regiments for the Crown. It is often said that the tacksmen were related to the chiefs/landlords. Some undoubtedly were, albeit at a distance. There were others, however, who were incomers. In terms of land, the subtenants were on a par with the small tenants. However, they often had a harder time of it as the tacksmen required them to provide many days service in the year, ploughing, sowing, harvesting, digging peats etc Complaints of such treatment are evident in the emigrations of the early 1770s. Towards the end of the 18th century the tacksmen were removing subtenants to make way for commercial cattle farming/sheep. Estate managements - both on the Sutherland estate and on Lord Reay's estate - tried to limit the numbers of subtenants the tacksmen removed. The term continued to be used in the 19th century, even with reference to the large sheep farmers. By the 1820s the Sutherland estate management was dead against tacksmen having subtenants - although there were still some farms held by tacksmen and subtenants until the 1840s. 3. Does anyone know where one can locate the names of those buried in the Earl of Sutherland tombs....I understand there were renovations in 1838, and the floor was dug up and the remains were all re-buried....but is there a list somewhere that lists those once/presently buried there? Perhaps Kirk Session records? Theresa.

    1. Lord Reays County
    2. T.Knapp
    3. Can someone tell me exactly where Lord Reays County was located...I am searching for info. on: (this is said by Spencer Sutherland 1865)...John Gordon, my grandfather married Jane McKay, daughter of John McKay, taxman of Meikleferry by whom were born sons, Alex, John, Robert, Joseph, and three more, and daughters, one, Christina Gordon, my mother.
