    1. RE: Golspie Parish marriage
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Theresa If you look at the Old Parish Register of Dornoch and if the marriage is shown on this then it should at least give you the area from where they came but I must point out that not all marriages are shown on the register. Normally it reads something like: Alexander Murray, Balvraid, married Johan Mackay, Achvaich. This will at least narrow down your search to a more specific area. You can arrange to see these registers through your local LDS Family History Centre. 3. Hi Garry, Kirkton is an area of the parish of Golspie. It was quite common in highland parishes for areas around a church to get that name. But beware -- it may not be where present church is located. The other date you noticed is indeed the date parents were wed. If you require more details on Golspie get in touch. Grant

    1. My brick wall
    2. Ian Morrison
    3. Dear fellow list-members, I can tell from several month's postings that there are many experienced, resourceful genealogists among you so I am picking-up on Christine's suggestion and asking for your help in getting past my brick wall. Here it is: My great, great granfather, Donald Morrison, was born in Durness (out of wedlock) on Nov 14, 1813 to Hugh Morrison and Fairly Reay MacCulloch. I have traced Fairly's birth, siblings, and parents but can find no record of her subsequent to Donald's baptism. Some of her family moved to Dalvichie, Lairg and I have contacted one of their descendants but they have no information on Fairly. Over 50% of the entries in the Durness OPR show patronymics; but not this one. The minister describes Hugh as "shepd. Balamhulich, a young lad." In the 1841 census, someone born in 1813 would be recorded as age 25. There was only one Donald of that age in the district and he is shown living in Lerin with a John Morrison age 75, i.e. born 1762 to 1766. I am fairly certain this Donald was my GGgrandfather because he and his family are recorded in succeeding censuses at the same croft. A (third) cousin lives there now. There were no Hugh Morrisons in the right age range in the 1841 census. I assume that John was Donald's grandfather. I assume that Hugh, being described as "a young lad" in 1813, was born between 1788 and 1795. There were four Hughs born during that period in Durness, but only one born to a John; in 1793 to John Morrison (alias macuilleammacuisdeaniceachainnruaidh) and Christian Calder (alias Donn). Both had previous marriages. This Hugh married Joanna MacCulloch (who may have been a cousin of Fairly) in 1818 and the family emigrated to Canada in the 1830's and settled in Lyn Ontario (now part of Brockville). I am in contact with a descendant but he was unable help me positively identify the "correct" Hugh. Can anyone suggest how I might confirm the "correct" Hugh ? If my assumption is correct, the patronymics take me back three more generations to Eachan Ruadh (Hector-the-Red). Over 25% of the Morrisons in the OPR have him in their patronymic. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Sorry I was so long winded. 2. Garry Andrew
    3. Hello, I am new to the list and wish to post a query. I am researching my grandfather, Donald Sinclair. I have very little information, but have had a look at a birth certificate for one of his children who was born and christened at Kirkton, Parish of (looks like) GOLSPIE in the county of Sutherland. Can any list member explain this to me ? Is Kirkton a village name, or a church name. This child was born 1924, January 23rd., and the registration date in 1924, February 8th. Another date is shown below the mother's name of 1917, February 17. Would this have been the marriage date of the parents ? Any help greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Garry W. Andrew Brandon, Mb. 3. I am looking for a letter, which I know for want of better Knowledge, was sent to Northern papers many years ago; Twas W.P. Mackay who wrote it and verbatim I will quote it, "Its time to get a free passage to this country you should know." In my wild erratic searches, visions come to me in urges Of him espousing the virtues of a country so young in real terms, Of a land replete with plenty, where a dozen could mean "20" He wrote of this new country to his kinfolk by the burns. He had talked in visions splendid of the food and feast extended Of veggies and bread, fresh fruit and good cheap meat, He cajoled and he implored, to some displaced and those ignored To take advantage of a bounty so plentiful and sweet. Now I am sitting in my dingy, little study where a stingy Ray of hope struggles feebly down the List of e-mails long, Tis you that I beckon, and for mine, tis you I reckon, That can help me find his letter and amend this painful wrong. Tho I dream sometimes still, that I'd like to change with Will, Like to take a turn at pioneering, in the Outback or the Coast While he faced the round eternal of the List and the infernal Replies to every bloody query 'cept any one I post. So if you're out there reading and sympathize my pleading Find his letter from Australia to the papers round Caithness I seek its full text, to be informed instead of vexed Please help me find this dispatch and relieve my wrath-ness. ------------------------------- See what frustration does to you. 3. There is a very nice description of Embo House in Memorabilia Domestica by Donald Sage, when he visited the occupants of the day who were renting it, Captn Kenneth MacKay and wife. Sage refers to it being built by Robert Hume Gordon, related to the Earls of Sutherland. Construction started 26th October 1767! (I wonder how anybody would know that day with such precision...)
