    1. MCKAY/SUTHERLAND FAMILY
    2. judy rogers
    3. Hi All, Just reposting my interests in the following family. ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND born February 1756 Golspie and MARON (Marion) MCKAY (Mackay). I am still trying to find birth details for Maron and Alexander. They married 29 December 1785, Dornoch and she died 22 July 1830 at Birichin. Would her Death Certificate show who her parents were or was her death too early to have a lot of information recorded? They had six children, David, James, John, Margt, Helen (my gg grandmother) and Kenneth. All were born in Dornoch. Any help with the above would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Judy - In a very very wet Sydney. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** The expansion of the electorate was a long and drawn out process, beginning with the Reform Act of 1832. Up until Reform one can work out who the electors were - essentially people with an interest in land, landowners, wadsetters, and the many with a manufactured 'fake' vote. In Sutherland you had to possess land with a valued rent of £200 Scots - elsewhere in Scotland £400 Scots. The valuations were based on overall values set in 1667. Unfortunately, very few 19th century electoral rolls have survived for Sutherland. The voters, however, will turn up in other sources, including estate rentals and valuation rolls etc. Malcolm Bangor-Jones -----Original Message----- From: Christine Stokes [mailto:chris@northants26.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: 08 May 2001 21:05 To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: Register of Voters ******************************************************************* This email has been received from an external party and has been swept for the presence of computer viruses. ******************************************************************* Sara I feel sure someone else will know better than I do on this subject but as far as I know until very late the only people who qualified for a vote were landowners. Users who are unable to get into the Website are now receiving a message indicating the site is busy and they should try again later. Furthermore, we are working with our sponsor Compaq Computer to increase capacity within the next few days. We are aware of the full gamut of problems, especially the registration, membership and international zip code bugs that many users maybe experiencing. 1. Register of Voters
    2. Sara Thomas
    3. The book about Golspie I mentioned in an earlier email speaks of a 'register of parishioners entitled to vote for county-councillors in 1889-90' This list had 243 people on it, 73 of them women. 'It must ... be noted that this is an analysis of a list of ratepayers only, and that a considerable number of heads of families were not on the list through being in arrears of poor-rates.' My question is: have any of these lists been preserved, and if so, where might they be? They wouldn't show young people or poor people, or most of the women, but still, they might yield something... 1. RE: SINCLAIR,
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hello Garry Welcome to the list. If you would like to put the addresses in Golspie for the couple on the marriage certificate with their names then I will look to see who was living there in 1881 census. With luck it may be the families you are seeking and this will give you a good start. It should also tell you on the certificate the age of the bride and groom? I am researching my grandfather, Donald Sinclair. I have very little information, but have had a look at a birth certificate for one of his children who was born and christened at Kirkton, Parish of (looks like) GOLSPIE in the county of Sutherland. Can any list member explain this to me ? Is Kirkton a village name, or a church name. This child was born 1924, January 23rd., and the registration date in 1924, February 8th. Another date is shown below the mother's name of 1917, February 17. Would this have been the marriage date of the parents ? Any help greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Garry W. Andrew Brandon, Mb. 3. Hi Grant Nice to see you back on. Hope it was a great trip? Have a look at Highland Hearts. Added the 1811 census for Golspie while you were away. I will be in Sutherland next weekend. It was quite common in highland parishes for areas around a church to get that name. But beware -- it may not be where present church is located. The other date you noticed is indeed the date parents were wed. If you require more details on Golspie get in touch.
