    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hello Sue For reasons best known to themselves the Golspie registers do not always include mother's names before the early 1800s. May be worth looking for children to the father only. Christine Highland Hearts http://www.highlandhearts.com/ -----Original Message----- From: shadden [mailto:shadden@gateway.net] Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2001 6:14 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: McIntosh/Gordon Marriage I hope someone on the list might be able to help. I am looking for the children of William McIntosh who married Margaret Gordon in Golspie on 22 October 1751. Did this family then move to Rogart where they had a son William born in 1760? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Sue Hadden shadden@gateway.net ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== You may, at times, wish to check out previous messages to this list. 1. RE: Eviction
    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** The legal process of removing enabled a landowner to remove a tenant on condition of giving sufficient notice - 40 days before the term day which was usually Whit. The legislation goes back to 1555! A tenant could not be removed if he/she had a valid lease which still had years to run. The legal processes are in the sheriff court records. They are uncatalogued. All they provide is a list of names. The reasons for removal were many. Not all removals were to clear the small tenants to make way for sheep farmers. Tenants were subject to the process for not paying their rent. In many instances landlords used removal as a threat to ensure better behaviour in the future. Many tenants were subjected to a legal summons but were never removed. There is a very important distinction between removing and eviction. The initial process of removing did not give landlords the actual right to evict (that required more legal procedure). Many tenants left quietly of their own accord and did not require to be evicted from their homes by the sheriff officers. I would imagine that Kirkstone is trying to be Kirtomy. 1819 was the year when major changes were made in Strathnaver. Kirtomy became a crofting township. In 1818, in preparation for 1819, all the existing tenants were subject to process of removal, including John Macdonald,. This ensured that the landlord could re-arrange the township into crofts for entry in 1819. Why John McDonald was not given a croft is not clear. Perhaps he chose not to accept a small holding, or perhaps, for some reason, the landlord did not want him as a tenant. 3. William MacDonald shows up in 1811 in Newland, Farr, Sutherlandshire with himself and one other male in household (I believe this to be my gr gr gr gr grandfather John MacDonald) 6 females (one probably being his wife!) with a total of 8 to the household..... In 1812 my John MacDonald gets married to Margaret MacDonald on the parish record it states he is from Newland, Farr,Sutherlandshire and she is from Armadale, Farr Sutherlandshire! They name their one and only son William MacDonald so I would say my deduction of William of Newland in 1811 will be John's father..... But for Margaret.....there are two that could be her father.....and since no second son was born ...(or at least found!) I have no clue as to who her father could be.....and since this early census only gives head of household and both McDonalds' in Armadale are male.....well you see my problem..... Has anyone any suggestions on how I will go from here?? to find siblings for John and or Margaret...John obviously had a lot of sisters....and if he had brothers then...they had left the nest by 1811 Has anyone a list of....soldiers by name of McDonald after or about 1815?? One of these two had a brother that became a Major....I have his picture in uniform taken about 1867-1870 and he is quite old.....by then.... If anyone would like to see the picture let me know and I will send it to them, he is holding what is known apparently as a "Wellington Hat" Also....is there any burying grounds for Newland, and Armadale?? Cathy....suggestions most welcomed!!

    3. Guide to Sutherland and Caithness, by Hew Morrison, 1883, p30 - While at Golspie, in August 1829, Beriah Botfield of Norton Hall described two scenes which impressed him very much. The first was 'a flock of men, women, and children of all ages, hasting in their holiday attire to embark on board a brig from Brora to Upper Canada'. The other was when he had 'an opportunity of observing, with a mingled feeling of respect and admiration, the deep devotional character of the Highland peasantry, who, however they may spend the other six days of the week, never fail to remember that the seventh day is the Sabbath, as the decency of their apparel, the staid and reverential expression of their countenance, and the constant observance of the sacred ordinances, abundantly testify'.

    3. Hello, Marla I find a potentially useful geographic note using the index to Scottish History Society's Fourth Series - Volume 8: Papers on Sutherland Estate Management 1802-1816 - Vol. 1; editor R.J. Adam, MA [Edinburgh; copyright 1972; SBN 9500260 3 4 (set of of two volumes)] Page lviii, Volume I "... though Donald Sage gives no indication of the fact in his description of the removals, a large part of the low lands along the east bank of the river, between Kildonan kirk and Balnavaliach, was lotted out for settlement by John Roy under Young's direction." Notes: The parish is Kildonan, the year 1812 or 1813, the river is the Helmsdale. Re Donald Sage on removals: see Memorabilia Domestica (Wick, 1889), pp. 248-9. I would guess that Balnavaliach was upstream from the church - but where exactly? Please, would some kind soul instruct me on this point. Best wishes, Frances bishad@direct.ca PS - I do not have a map that shows Balnavaliach. Knockfin was east of River Halladale (between the river and the Caithness border). Achintoul was to the south. Loch an Ruathaire and Ellig were to the west of the river. Please share the good news if you find a source for a comprehensive pre-Clearance map.
