"I am a Sutherland Shire man and my oldest brother is in my fathers holding David Murray Skelbo Dornoch The rest of my fathers family are in America So I had to go to farm service when I could not get a holding I have a great many relations in Sutherland Shire such as John Murray Farmer Davochbeg ...also William Murray Doll Brora Dr Sutherland Brora and some in the most of Sutherland Shire". 2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** Estate papers for the Skibo estate only really pick up in the latter part of the 19th century. Prior to that one is facing a distinct challenge. Given the history of debt on the estate, there are references in the Court of Session records. But these are only searchable at the National Archives and even then, a huge challenge. I would never recommend these to anyone without a severe health warning. The sasines, on the other hand, are indexed for the N Highlands (although one has to be careful that a significant number of sasines were registered in Edinburgh rather than at Fortrose). There is a printed abbreviated version of all sasines for 1781-. However, it is only available at a few locations. 3. The book is quite thick and does not have a detailed index rather it lists all the Fowlis MUNRO families from Donald who died c.1053 to Sir Hector, eleventh Baronet. The Cadet Families are listed as Munros of Rhives, Munros of Kiltearn, Munros of Fearn etc so I would need to know just in which area to search.-full list below-some places I cannot find on the map. Most I assume are in Rosshire with only a few in Sutherland. Cadet Famies; Culcairn, Obsdale,Newmore, Culrain, Milntown, Kilmorack, Allan, Culnauld, Tarlogie, Pitlundie & Bearcrofts, Auchenbowie, Craiglockhart & Cockburn, Edmondsham, Fearn, Ingsdon, Coul & Balcony, Erribol, Culcraggie, Kiltearn, Ferrytown of Obsdale, Milntown of Katewell, Ardullie, Teanoird, Killichoan, Tain, Milntown of Alness, Teaninich, Fyrish Contullich & Kildermorie, Dr Thomas Munro, Tullochue & Knockancuirn, Assynt, Achany, Katewell, Limlair, Pittonachy, Novar, Rhives, Findon, Braemore, Pontzfield, Leality now Rockfield, Lexington (American), New England (American). I am unable to get past a certain point in my research as I cannot find the parentage of John MUNRO supposedly born c.1795 in Golspie, married c. 1815 place unknown to Eliza SUTHERLAND also of Golspie and died at Drummuie in 1851. John 's occupation is listed as firstly a shoemaker then an ag. labourer. So, I am trying to put together all the Munro families in Golspie. 3. In the ancient cemetery of Scibberscross, Strath Brora, there are many stones with a fleur de lys emblem. It has been said to me that this was the insignia of those who had Jacobite sympathy. Apparently men wore a white rose for the same reason. I understood that most of Sutherland had little or nothing to do with the 1745. Can anyone explain this or confirm the use of the fleur de lys? 2. Trying to find info on John Cormack who was living at Dunrobin Mains, Golspie in the 81 census. I think he may have died in the 1880's but have not confirmed it yet. He was 30 years old in 1881, also Janet Jessie Bruce married a MacKay during the same time period. I can't find her either. She was living in Creich in 1881 with her brother John Bruce. Does anyone have a 1891 census that would be willing to do a lookup? Thanks, Charlie USA

    3. A Scottish death certificate gives you the following: Deceased's name and marital status with spouse's name plus the deceased's occupation The date and precise time of death and the place where the death occurred The full name of deceased's parents plus whether they are dead or alive and the maiden surname of the mother The cause of death and whether or not a doctor was seen The signature and the status of the informant of death - usually a son or daughter etc They are very useful bits of paper. 3. There are no death certificates in Scotland prior to 1855 when statutory registration of births, deaths and marriages began. Prior to that the only place to find a death is those lucky enough to have a gravestone still standing in one of the churchyards. There are very few stones compared to the numbers who died. In a few instances there is a mention of a death in the Old Parish Registers but again they are few and far between. You can look at these registers at your local family history centre if you order the films. When a person shown on the census records after 1851 it is easier as the spouse is then shown as widow or widower which at least gives an indication of death during the preceeding ten years. 1. Hector or James!
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. Can anyone tell me if it has ever been known for a Hector to be a James? Is there any sense in thinking that a James Grant could be known as Hector? Would love to hear from anyone who has found an instance of these two names being interchangeable. 1. RE: purchasing of commissions
    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** In the second half of the 18th century there were a number of Regiments raised in Sutherland - Fencible and otherwise. The Sutherland family exercised a very strong influence in deciding who should become officers. Patronage, as it was called, was part of public life and extended to posts in the customs etc. The middle classes - the large farmers etc - were forever writing to the Sutherland family or their lawyers, trying to persuade the landlord to put in a good word in the appropriate place. PS A word about the 'Duke'. The Countess of Sutherland succeeded in 1766. She married Earl Gower in 1785 but continued to be known as the Countess. He became Marquis of Stafford in 1803 from which point she was the Marchioness of Stafford. He became the Duke of Sutherland in 1833. After his death that year, she was known as the Duchess-Countess.
