Hi, not a ridiculous question. Used to confuse me. I have records that show Helmsdale in Loth in 1809, 1821, 1831 and 1841. In 1861 Helmsdale was part of Kildonan parish. I do not think they moved anything other than the boundaries of the parishes. Sorry to ask what will surely seem a ridiculous question to those who live in the area, but can someone tell me the geography re Helmsdale, Kildonan & Loth. I know my Henderson & Bruce families come from Helmsdale, but some of the birth records state Kildonan & some state Loth. Are these 2 parishes located in the town of Helmsdale? Is it geographically feasible for a family to live in Helmsdale yet register births in 2 different parishes or would the family have had to move? Hi Brenda, I don't know if it is of any help, I have a Margaret McLennan who married a Charles McLean (possibly here in Australia) in 1866. I haven't even looked at this branch yet, but if you find a Margaret, I'd love to hear. It is possible her middle name is Ord which initially I thought odd but given that many are given mother's maiden names and their middle name, anything is possible!! I only have her year of marriage no other info. I don't know if it of any interest but Robert "Bob" Grant, often known as Captain Bob, of the Dornoch butchering family was a great friend of my father's and I knew him as I was growing up. This is recent history but if you need to know more, please contact me. Elspeth
My ancestors were also from the Helmsdale area (John Macpherson and Janet McIntosh). They were listed in the Loth Parish in 1841, and in the Kildonan Parish from 1851 on. Apparently, the parish moved: The Kildonan Parish was decimated by the Clearances, so it was given part of the Loth Parish. Janet

Christine: You said: > Around 1841 George again left Sutherland settling in New Zealand where he became a leading sheep and cattle breeder and successful landowner naming his farm Blairich. Check out www.google.com and you get: From the Wairau to Okaramio John Cameron is the key figure in the family story as he is the father of Elizabeth (from whom the Dickson/Hammond family are descended), of John Cameron Jnr, and of Kate (from whom the Nees family section trace their maternal origin. He was born in Scotland in 1822 and grew up at the time of Highland history when sheep ruled the glens. John became a skilled shepherd, probably following his brother Donald into employment on the Lochiel estates and at "Blairich" in Sutherlandshire. There he became known as and trusted as a shepherd by the McRae family. A high-quality sheep flock had been established at Blarich (or Blairich) in the parish of Rogart, Sutherland by George McRae1 and it seems reasonable to presume (because of the proximity of the Clan McRae lands to Lochiel) that the laird made the best of this improvement programme. The young Cameron sheep-men may have been trained at Blarich, they were certainly known to the McRae family and Donald and John's expertise was respected.2 Duncan, much younger, probably visited his brothers and learnt about sheep first-hand but in addition he seems to be more experienced in village life, transport and machinery. AND Neil McKAY, his father and brothers had been victims of early highland clearances and had been removed from 'Atnacalli', in the Strathmore, around 1810, and settled in Rogart. Marion was said to be of the 'Blairich McDonalds', the same family as that of Sir John A. McDONALD BW Brenda

George MacRae was sheep manager looking after 9,000 sheep, on a farm in Lairg owned by Major Gilchrist. He later went to the Red River colony in Canada returning to Rogart in 1824. In Rogart he was said to be a manager for the Duke of Sutherland at Blairich also looking after sheep. Around 1841 George again left Sutherland settling in New Zealand where he became a leading sheep and cattle breeder and successful landowner naming his farm Blairich. Does anyone have any information on either George or on Blairich? Hi Everyone I really do not mean to carry this subject on but, did anyone else try replacing the sulfnbk.exe file like Symantec said to. I went to there website for this hoax and followed what it said to do to replace the sulfnbk.exe file, but according to the SFC I am not missing any windows files. I also tried the find option to see if it could find the sulfnbk.exe on my windows98 cd rom, and again no luck. Did anyone else have this problem? Yes, the file is not on our backup CD, but I'm sure we can get along without it. It is a file to reinstall long file names, and probably will not be used by the ordinary person. Christine, For the record, I found the file on my hard disk and have double deleted it. I'm amazed that Norton etc. can't 'tell' its software to isolate/delete this file if detected when the software does a regular sweep. I don't know if it's any comfort, but I have checked with one recent correspondent, and he hasn't been infected by me. I daren't tell you all the public bodies I've contacted recently, but believe me, Scotland will grind to a halt on 1 June if I don't act quickly! Incidentally, it's not enough to have wiped the file once --- we need to check again in the final minutes of 31 May in case of reinfection. Let's hope it's a hoax. Hello list I have just returned from our holiday weekend and amongst my mail found the following warning of a virus about to strike. I followed the instructions and found that it was also on my computer. I have deleted it totally but strongly recommend that anybody who has received mail from me in the last couple of months should also check. I know I said a while back that we should not respond to virus warnings but I would hate to think that I infected any person. So please check your machines. I will not be answering any of the personal emails for the next few days. I want my machine thoroughly checked first. Christine Highland Hearts http://www.highlandhearts.com/ Liz received a virus warning from one of her geneological friends (see below). I found the file on my PC and removed it (as described). I have no idea whether it this file actually does house a virus but it seemed prudent to take this advice. Removing the file has not caused any obvious problem **************** It was brought to my attention yesterday that a virus was on all of our computers here at work. I do not know how long it has been on our computers, but Virus software can not detect it. It will not become active until June 1, 2001, at that point it will become active and will be to late. It wipes out all files and folders on the hard drive. This virus travels thru E-mail and migrates to the 'C:\windows\command' folder. To find it and get rid of it off of your computer, do the following. Go to the "START" button. Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH" Go to "FILES & FOLDERS" Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive. Type in; SULFNBK.EXE Begin search. If it finds it, highlight it. Go to 'File' and delete it. Close the find Dialog box Open the Recycle Bin Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin You should be safe. > The bad part is: You need to contact everyone you have sent ANY E-mail to in the past few months.
