Hi Robin There was a Norman Macdonald family in Rogart said to come from a Major Macdonald who is buried in Rogart. Norman Macdonald appears to be the son of a James Macdonald son of the Major. Now it is said locally that all the Macdonalds in the old kirkyard in Rogart are of the same family but this is hard to prove. Descendants were known as the Jimmy Normans; the Willie Normans, etc. Norman is absolutely not a common name in Sutherland so I think your Norman must have some sort of link with this Rogart family. Wish I could think of a way to advise you but I have been struggling for ages myself trying to sort out all these Rogart Macdonalds. According to what I found on Norman McDonald he should have been in Golspie for quite awhile, thats if the information is true. Here it is Norman McDonald b. abt 1749 in Golspie, married Janet Gunn Dec 13 1774 in Golspie. This is according to the IGI, and I have not found any other birth record for a Norman in all of Scotland that even comes close in the IGI. Might be worth trying Golspie High School to see if it has a copy. The school had a few good old books at one time but I don't know if that was one. Interesting that it appears on the net from France. Ive heard of this book though I've never seen a copy. Something in the far reaches of my memory (not the most reliable of things) makes me think that decendants of one of the contributers was mentioned as being still in Golspie. This I assume was picked up on the net> Grant

Hi I remember reading in the newspaper last year about a bowling club in Melbourne whos members decided to sell their greens which were prime real estate. They changed their mind when it was found that James Munro the former Premier of Victoria had given them the land but inserted a clause that if the land was ever sold the money was to go to his descendents. Regards Colin
Hi Robin Evelix is in Dornoch parish. If you go to www.streetmap.co.uk Put in Dornoch and tick UK place When map of Dornoch comes up keep moving to the left and you will come to Evelix. Unfortunately the parish register keepers in Golspie did not think mothers very important and so up until the early 1800s only fathers are shown on the registers. If you put in Norman Macdonald as the father and search ALL you should see the children born to him. Norman Macdonald is not a common name so you should get a good idea. Only way to check they are his children is to follow it through the OPRs and see if they were all born in the same place or look at the 1841 census records in the hope they are there with their children. How long do you think he was in Golspie? I can look him up on some lists I have here. Can you tell me where Evelicks is? The IGI has it as ROC and Sutherland, so I am confused now, which according to my husband is nothing new. The IGI has Norman McDonald and Janet Gunn married in 1774 in Golspie, but there are no children mentioned on the IGI. Is that unusual? Found out this much: NICHOLSON, Edward W.B. (ed.) Golspie. Contributions to its folklore by Annie and Bella Cumming, Jane Stuart, Willie W. Munro, Andrew Gunn, Henri J. MacLean, and Minnie Sutherland (when pupils of Golspie School) London: D. Nutt, 1897 xvi-352pp. Illus. Music + 14 plates (some photogravure) + fldg. litho. map. Gilt pict. cloth (ex-library). Available on the internet from France at £28 sterling plus postage! Too much for an old book. Perhaps there is a copy in Golspie library? ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** This is an old book - 19th century from memory - and has I think been mentioned before. One should not pay too much for a second hand copy. It has some interesting material but is definitely not a history of Golspie. For that one should buy the late Margaret Grant's book and booklet. Hello Christine, The final sentence from the extract from the Grolier Encyclopeadia says that James MUNRO did marry: "He married in 1853 Jane Macdonald, and had a family of four sons and three daughters." Unfortunately, there is nothing about all those children in the entry. The following extract form the book "The Land Boomers" by Michael Cannon was sent to me some years ago. I am interested in a Donald Munro and his brother John who lived in Melbourne. They were cousins of my Gt Grandfather and were from Lairg. Melbourne 1880's onwards James Munro claimed descent form a baronet of the same name. Was born in Scotland in 1832. Became printer by trade. At 21 married Jane MacDonald in Edinburgh & had 4 sons & 3 daughters. Emigrated toVictoria 1858 - became printer. James was a teetoller, started Real Estate Bank, Federal Bank and rose to become Premier of Victoria. Depositors invested 2 million sterling and when the bubble burst Munro hastily had himself appointed Agent General in London and fled the Colony. Later returning to face creditors & Insolvency Court. His son Donald became prominent in Victorian Land boom. Had a successful auctioneer - estate agency with Baillieu - Munro & Baillieu - lots of noices for land sales with their names in the better parts of Melbourne. They too went broke. Donald Munro resigned in 1887 just before he went broke but had to face the courts. Alexander another son appointed Manager of one of his fathers companies. son in law Robert Wallam? Balding also in one of their companies. Pam cook Christchurch, NZ
Hi Grant Can you confirm Wemyss Cavaick's real name? I remember "Wemyss" visiting his homeland when I was a small boy. To extend on Isabellas point about Cavaick (various spelling as is so often the case in the Highlands) being close to Brochrobbie and Badnellan is correct. Brochrobbie was generally seen as the area below Cavaick close to the river. The most easterly house in Badnellan is just above Cavaick. Ive seen some overlap in Brochrobbie, Badnellan and Cavaick when checking records. Grant ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== You may, at times, wish to check out previous messages to this list. I was at Cavaick last weekend visiting my lifelong friend Richard Bremner a decendant of "Wemyss Cavaick" who still lives in the family home. Grant
