    2. ***************************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. ***************************************************************************** The parish of Reay was split between Sutherland and Caithness. Under, I think, the 1975 local government reorganisation, Caithness was expanded to include Tongue and Farr. This unpopular decision was reversed but not before some atlases and books had incorporated it. In the Penguin Buildings of Scotland volume for the Highlands and Islands, for instance, Tongue is under Caithness. Confusing. 3. Christine - In your Murrays, do you have any information on Ann Murray who was married to Henry Sutherland, probably about 1800 in the Dornoch area? We are particularly interested in learning more about their daughter Euphemia (born 1807). We have a Euphemia Sutherland who married William Sutherland in Oxford Co., Ontario, in 1833. We believe they both came from Sutherlandshire. Euphemia (Effy) and William's children (in order): Barbara, Isabelle, John, Ann, Henry and Alexander. Isabelle married William Geddes who emigrated from Rogart prior to 1851, and they became my husband's great-grandparents. We haven't been able to find anything on William Sutherland's parentage and/or siblings either beyond dates of birth (1808) and death (1858) shown on his gravestone. Euphemia's name is also on the stone, but any information was obscured when the stone was set in cement and we have been unable to locate any written records for Old Log Kirk. We believe Euphemia died sometime between son Alexander's birth (1846) and the 1851 census when William was listed as a widower. Thanks for any assistance. 3. Hello Christine, Time for me to repay the favours! I've had a look at the Australian Vital Records Index which covers New South Wales (1788-1888), Tasmania (1803-1899), Victoria (1837-1888) and West Australia (1841-1905). Unfortunately could not come up with anything positive. If there had been a death record it may have listed his father's name or place of birth however these indexes are by no means conclusive. I am planning a day at the local Genealogical Society library soon so I will have a look at the records they have. 3. Frances (in Australia) - We have Calders, too, from Sutherlandshire. They start with John CALDER, b. 1801 in Swordale, who married Margaret McLEOD in 1825 in Tulloch. They had Janet, George, Anne, James, Donald, Christena, Jessie, Georgina, Margaret and John. Their son, James CALDER, b. 1832 in Creich, married our Johanne McKAY in 1862. They had Margaret, Christena, John, William, James, Donald, Isabella and Jesse. John and Margaret are buried in N. Embro Cemetery in Oxford Co., Ontario. James and Johanne went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and are buried there. Could there be any connection with your Calders? Regards, Diane Geddes ------- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. G'day to you too Jeff There are many days when I wish I was in the tropics. If you have gauged the traffic on the site here correctly it should be real busy this week from the UK! Our weather forecast reads like the middle of winter with heavy rain and gale force winds! You making that trip to Sutherland yet? Here it is either hot and dusty, or hot and muddy. Glad to hear there are many new people on the list and at the risk of being repetitive, I'll just run my interests past again. I am looking for an ANDERSON family from Brora and Golspie. Parents were George ANDERSON (born C. 1798) and Elizabeth Sutherland (nee) FRASER (born 1793). George was the son of William ANDERSON and Margaret (nee) SQUAIR of Brora. Their children were John William ANDERSON (born 1826 in Clyne); George Sackville ANDERSON (born 1827 in Clyne); William ANDERSON (born 1834 in Golspie); Margaret Squair ANDERSON (born 1836 in Golspie); and Colin Granville ANDERSON (born 1839 in Golspie). The family was highly visible in Golspie records during the 1830's but had disappeared by the time of the 1841 census. George's older brother, James William (aka Willoughby) ANDERSON went to Pictou NS in 1832, and I think some of Elizabeth's brothers did likewise, so there is a strong possibility that the family went to Canada, however, my GGF, John ANDERSON stayed on in Golspie in the care of Ann McGLASHAN, the keeper of one of the inns. He went to Australia in 1853. I would be most interested in hearing from anyone who could shed light on these people. 3. Hi Chris Knowing your interest in Sutherland GRANTS reminded me that several years ago I did some research for a fellow member of the then New Zealand Clan Grant Society. It was a while ago and my notes are packed away in New Zealand (as sometimes I think my memory is also!!), but I'm sure the immigrant ancestor was a Robert GRANT from Clyne, SUT, an early immigrant to New Zealand (c1840?) who became a large runholder in the North Island. He was from a large family of GRANTS and his father (I cannot remember the name) died at Clyne in 1855 (with all that lovely detail on his death certificate of course). There was another brother who was also a very successful runholder in New Zealand and there are many descendants. I believe the two brothers also married two Clyne or Brora brides in New Zealand. Sorry I can't remember more, however I'm sure I could talk my father-in-law in New Zealand into a trip to our storage garage to retrieve the relevant file! Peter Grant London (ex NZ)

1. Mackay strays
    2. John McKay
    3. Cleaning up some Clan Mackay family history files and thought I would put this on the list for anyone out there who might be looking for links or limbs of their tree. Per ALR Mackay Burwood Victoria (Aust) - Murdoch Mackay b 1789? married in Aberdeen to Elizabeth McLeod wo both came to Sydney 1827. Issue: Angus born Aberdeen 1824;, George Sackville b. Aberdeen 1826; Elizabeth born Sydney 1829 and Augustus born Parramatta 1831. Per Janet Maher Bendigo - who has a Findlay Mackay in her tree who was born about 1857, parents James and Jane Mackay (nee Pauton - I think, writing difficult to read). Janet not sure where they hailed from originally. From general research - noted that a David McKay (aged 29) arrived Aust. per "Thetis" on 15 Feb 1849 wife Agnes and children William, Susan and Mary. I hope these help someone. I shall continue to post "strays" or queries from from files occasionally with the aim of supporting those on the list.
