    1. [SUT] Scotland Free Census Project - Update
    2. Jennifer Gribble
    3. The Scotland Free Census Project is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe all UK 19th century census returns to create an on-line 'free-to-view' database. The project was launched in April 2002 and to date has 6 active county projects and another 12 due to be underway by the end of the year. Each county project is beginning with the 1841 census returns and will move on to other years at the discretion of the county organizer. I am currently trying to recruit organizers for all open counties, including Sutherland. Organizers are responsible for recruiting and supervising a team of volunteers to transcribe their assigned county. To be an organizer, you just need some time, a computer and access to a microfilm or microfiche reader. All other materials are supplied by FreeCEN, including software, microfilm/fiche, and plenty of advice and instruction. If you are interested in organizing a project for Sutherland or another county, please contact me at [email protected] More information on the project can be found at http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html Thank you, Jennifer Gribble Scotland Recruiter & Ayrshire Coordinator UK FreeCEN Project http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html

    3. I think this is a brilliant idea. I will create a full list of book holdings if you each post which books you have. Bound to be duplicates but would be good if there was a 'library' in each country. My dream is to get to Sutherland one day & do some sleuthing. In the meantime, I continue to search from Canada for my elusive Bruces, Hendersons & Mathesons from Kildonan/Loth/Helmsdale. I am particularly searching for the wife of William Bruce born abt 1791 in Kildonan. William was still alive at the time of the 1851 census, but his wife had died before. They had 4 children, William, Esther, Peggy & Betsy. Also searching for the parents of Gordon Henderson who married Christian Bruce (on the other side of the family) Mar 12, 1824 in Loth. Their children were John, George & Gordon. Actually, I'm looking for lots more, but that is a good start. 3. Hi, Folks I have set up some new pages on my website www.cmy.org.uk with photographs and transcripts of a few gravestones in the Tongue Parish ceneteries. Some of these memorials are included in my own research, others have been photographed for members of the Tongue List - some just because I like them! Most people on these stones were born, lived and died in Tongue Parish. The pictures have been heavily compressed. If you want to make a print of "your" stone, or study the wording in more detail - just ask, and I'll send you a better file. Grateful for your input on layout, the search facility, etc. Good luck with your research. Mary Young

    2. I have been trying to track my Hamilton family and have hit a dead end. I am looking for any information on James HAMILTON born around 1786 in Clyne. He married Ann CAMERON from Golspie and their first son Robert was baptised in Clyne 28 February 1814. They then must have made a move to Caithness where all there other children were born. James died in 1851 in Bower. I can find no record of either his birth or his marriage. Can anyone advise me on likely sources of information (beyond the Scotlandspeople web site which I have thoroughly searched). Many Thanks Cathy Goodwin ([email protected])
