    3. I fear I'm one of the people who have written to just Christine, instead of posting to the list as a whole, for my inquiry. My apologies :) I'm looking for a John GORDON, born between 1825 and 1827 in Golspie. His death certificate and several census records list his birth place as Golspie, and his parents as Donald GORDON and Elizabeth McLEOD. I've looked in the IGI, and Christine has looked in her records, and no match has yet been found. He moved, before 1849, to Angus county (he married Elizabeth CUTHILL there in 1849. I've found a listing for a John born to a Donald GORDON in Golspie, but the years and mothers (at least what is listed on the Death Certificate) do not match. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. I'm visiting Scotland next month, and if I could track this down, it would be quite helpful. Thanks! 3. Regarding the free census for Sutherland. Christine is right, it will take someone with a lot of time and a certain amount of computer savvy. I am currently involved in transcribing a section of the 1841 census for Argyll, and though I am the first in 3 levels of checking the same record, I am finding it very slow going and quite time consuming...also, I am only one of a dozen or more the coordinator has to handle. As to my list of available records: Ross & Cowper Sutherland Monumental Inscriptions pre 1855 Peter Harrington Culloden 1746 [campaign series #12] John Prebble The Highland Clearances George Eyre-Todd Highland Clans of Scotland: Their History and Traditions. 2 vol, printed abt 1923 Fitzroy MacLean Scotland A Concise History, revised ed Australian Vital Records Index 1788-1905 [CD set] 1881 Canadian Census [CD set] British Isles Vital Records Index 1530 - 1906 [partial records] 1880 United States Census [CD set] 1881 Scotland Census [CD set] Canadian Genealogy Index 1600s to 1900s [CD set] FTMakers CDs on Virginia; Pennsylvania; Connecticut; Rhode Island and New Jersey, Mid-Atlantic Genealogies US Military Records 1784 to 1811 [CD] FTMaker CDs United States/Europe Births 900-1880; New England local and family histories; and selected US/International marriage records I also have about 20 volumes of FTMaker's family history CDs. Frances McDonnell Aberdeen Obituaries 1823-1839 and 1800-1822 Sheila Livingstone Scottish Customs I also have large files on Hawaiian genealogies, with access to Hawaiian records. Quite a few Scots settled in Hawaii in the 1800s. I have a book called Scots in Hawaii, and have access through the Caledonian Society for other local records relating to Scots who settled here. Finally, I for one have received tremendous help from the members of this list. I may not post on an active basis, but I read every message and have quite a few saved for future reference. I have learned so much from all the various postings; it shocked me to read there was thought of shutting it down. 1. [SUT] Scotland Free Census Project
    2. Are members aware of the above? The Scotland Free Census Project is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe all UK 19th century census returns to create an on-line 'free-to-view' database. The project was launched in April 2002 and to date has 6 active county projects and another 12 due to be underway by the end of the year. Each county project is beginning with the 1841 census returns and will move on to other years at the discretion of the county organizer. Is there an organiser for Sutherland? Is this something people might be interested in doing/have the time to do? Does anyone know how to go about it? edward

    3. Hi, Please Christine, don't even consider the question 'Do you still wish there to be a Sutherland mailing list'? I know the list goes quiet every so often but if only other lists were as helpful and friendly as yours. Oh that I had more relatives that lived in Sutherland. Reposting my family interests Hugh Campbell married Louisa Munro in 1822 at Clyne. I can't find Hugh Campbell's birth or death but he and his wife are buried at Clyne Kirkton. Receiving a photo of their headstone was very much appreciated. Louisa Munro was born 1791 at Reay, daughter of William Munro and Ann Campbell. Any one know of this family ? Hugh and Louisa had 5 children all born at Gordonbush. Anne b. 1823, married Alexander Chisholm and went to Australia. Ellerington, b.1825, married Marion Sutherland and remained in Brora and had family. William Munro b.1829 died age 9 years Lexi b.1830 no record of her after 1861 census Hugh b. 1833 went to New Zealand Robert b. 1837 married Margaret McKenzie in 1865 and then went to Australia. 3. Would your Christina have a sister Jane? My " forever " search for my GGgrandmother Jane McKAY born around that time as she married in Portgower in 1828 continues. 1. [SUT] Military Buttons - a Postscript
    2. Sara Thomas
    3. In case you think my time would be better spent on genealogy than on buttons, I wish to state than an ancestor of mine lost his buttons at Waterloo. He was in the Royal Horse Artillery Rocket Troop --- a very brave lot, since the rockets frequently turned round in mid-air, whizzed back and hit the senders. Sara
