All our local libraries used to have fisces for us to lookup things, now they have computers. This should mean a stack oof fisces are being made redundant, and could be given to volunteers who would use them for historical lookups, if one knew who to ask???/ Elizabeth

Hi Edward, There is not currently a coordinator for Sutherland, but I am hoping to recruit one. The "way to go about it" if interested is to contact me and I will provide more details to help you make a decision. Overall I have found that there is a great deal of enthusiasm out there for the project. So far none of my organizers have reported any problems finding volunteers - in fact two of the projects have already assigned out all their parishes for transcription. This is fascinating. All round the world there are many Scottish place names but how many actually came from Sutherland? Would be wonderful to pinpoint them all. I know one of my own ancestors named his farm in South Island, New Zealand, Strathfleet. There is of course Kildonan in Canada. More? Kathy, My name is Dr Guy Sutherland-Barnicoat and I live in Park City Utah, USA and am very interested in the CD about Macdonald's in Sutherland, as my grandmother and a number of my family were Macdonald's from Sutherland and particular, Golspie. The family were basically all fisherperson and were very inter married. I've found the Scotlandpeoples website very helpful recently, even after Scots Orgin got out of the business. You can basically download/print all but the marriage records which to my dismay all cost 10 pounds each as they do not have them on imagery, but they have fairly specific names of the couple and dates. Any help you and/or the group can give me would be helpful. I start with Donald Sutherland/ Annie MacDonald who were married in Golspie January 16, 1807. Annie was born in Brora/Clyne in about 1780 and died in Golspie October 7, 1866, Donald was born in Golspie abt 1780 also. I have them having 5 children all born in Golspie, Janet 10/16/1804; John 5/9/1809; James 1812; Alexander 5/22/1816 and Thomas 1822. Again any help would be appreciated. Finally as my father the Barnicoat is Cornish, and I've been doing that tree, we should be so lucky as the ability to get records in Scotland is far superior to that of the UK..........Guy -----Original Message----- From: Cathy Wagner [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, October 03, 2002 1:09 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [SUT] Available Reference Sources Well group My list is small...smile I have the bm of MACDONALD surname in Sutherland from the Scottish Parish Cd the LDS has I have got The Edinburgh Almanack 1831 Ordnance Gazetter of Scotland 6 volumes both were gotten from Archive CD Books and neither cd is searchable so could take a while to do a look up Cathy Wagner ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== Please visit our NEW POSH web site at www.sutherlandheritage.com ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
I have been a volunteer on the Fife list for this Project for ages, but since I haven't got a microfiche or film reader, I've heard nothing from the organisers. So clearly, hard copies are not available. Would they buy fiche readers in bulk and sell on to us cheaply? A small point --- I'm curious to know what guarantees there are that we will continue to be offered free access to the index in perpetuity. A great deal of voluntary labour will be involved, plus cost of hardware. Despite the large number of Sutherland emigrants to Northern Nova Scotia, there are very few references to their homeland in their new communities. Here a few: New Lairg in Pictou County and found on some maps. However the train and post office chose to call it Landsdowne during the 1900's. New Lairg is preferred by the natives. Berrichan (sometimes spelled Boirachan), a farming community located south east of the village of Earltown in Colchester County. It was vacated in the early 1900's. Spiddle Hill, north of Earltown, was said to have been named after a place in Sutherland. The old church records call it Cnoc na Spidail. An early settler came from Slettill in Strath Halladale which may have been the intended name. Brora Lake is found in south east Pictou County. Cnoc Na Guidh is a hill found near Earltown which was settled by people from Strath Brora who named it after a feature in their home area. Surnames were far more common in naming geographic features. There is a Sutherland River, Baillie Brook, at least three Matheson Brooks, Bein Na Mhathanach, (Matheson's Mountain), MacKay's Brook, Murray Brook, etc. throughout Colchester and Pictou Counties. There is no organiser for Sutherland. We did discuss this on the list a long time ago. I cannot take this job on as it will be all time consuming and would mean that I would have no time for POSH, managing this list, the web site, our graveyards, washing my hair! Whoever takes this on will have to have a microfiche reader, lots of people to help, and be reasonably computer literate. The software is provided by the main organiser. Here is the latest news I have on the project: "The Scotland Free Census Project is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe all UK 19th century census returns to create an on-line 'free-to-view' database. The project was launched in April 2002 and to date has 6 active county projects and another 12 due to be underway by the end of the year. Each county project is beginning with the 1841 census returns and will move on to other years at the discretion of the county organizer. I am currently trying to recruit organizers for all open counties, including Sutherland. Organizers are responsible for recruiting and supervising a team of volunteers to transcribe their assigned county. To be an organizer, you just need some time, a computer and access to a microfilm or microfiche reader. All other materials are supplied by FreeCEN, including software, microfilm/fiche, and plenty of advice and instruction. If you are interested in organizing a project for Sutherland or another county, please contact me at [email protected] More information on the project can be found at http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html Thank you, Jennifer Gribble Scotland Recruiter & Ayrshire Coordinator UK FreeCEN Project http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html " If anyone wishes to take this on please contact Jennifer direct and then let us all know. I am certain that if an organiser for Sutherland can be found plenty of helpers would then follow. Some of the list have still got the virus. My hubby is an IT bod and I've done the updates with Norton, and scanned my system but when it comes through, as it has just now, we've still not managed to destroy it, just quarantine it. Be careful if you do online banking or anything like that. Apparently hit has a 'key logger trogan' which though I'm not sure what it is, I'm assured by hubby it is pretty nasty. Treat your systems as unsecure until it has finally been killed. Katrina
