First, a big thank you to Christine for replying to my request for information on Hamilton's in Sutherland. As you say, there were not many in Sutherland. My James moved to Caithness around 1815, where again there were few Hamilton's. This in itself has been an advantage as it has made it reasonably easy to track the family from there and I have a good tree laid out all stemming from James Hamilton (b abt 1786) from Clyne and Ann Cameroon (b 1788) from Gospie. If anyone is interested in this leg, I would be happy to supply the details. His birth place is noted only from the 1851 census (he died within months of the census) but I am fairly confident it is correct as he married Ann Cameroon from Golspie and I have found her birth records and family. I have found several Hamiltons baptised around the same time period in Clyne (but not my James). Date Father’sName Mother’s Helen Hamilton 26 Apr 1784 Robert Hamilton Isobell Sutherland William Hamilton 20 Sep 1784 Robert Hamilton Christy Sutherland William Hamilton 22 Oct 1784 John Hamilton Janet McKay John Hamilton 05 Nov 1785 Robert Hamilton Christy Sutherland Margt. Hamilton 20 Dec 1790 William Hamilton Katherain Sutherland With so few Hamilton's, my James must be related, probably to all of them but I cannot be sure. I may well have to be satisfied that I can go no further given the sparse records. However, I would like to understand more about the movement of people in the time period. I have ordered the CD on the Sutherland estates and read several books on the clearances. At this stage, I am not sure if he was part of these major upheavals or whether it was just a migration for other reasons. Possibly someone could recommend sources of information on the history of the area which will be helpful. I live in Kent which has an excellent archive of local history and will again volunteer to look up information if it can be helpful to anyone. Thanks again. Cathy Goodwin (nee Hamilton) Kent, England
Hi Listers I am trying to find some info for a distant cousin of my husband who is descended from a Robert McKAY and Christian/Christiana MACONOCHIE/McGECHRAN (possibly McKECHNIE). This couple emigrated to Australia aboard the City of Edinburgh in 1837 both aged between 20 - 26. The information I have is that they were both from Sutherland and both baptized by 'Lewis Rose, Minister'. I wondered if anyone on this list might have access to the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticae and would be able to look up which church he would have been at around 1811 - 1817? I would be grateful for any other information anyone might have on this couple. Thank you Elaine
Welcome back Sue. You are right to stay awake till bedtime. That is the part I hate most about transatlantic flights! I do hope you took photograph of the marker at the side of the road? It was great to meet so many people with whom I had been in e-mail correspondence for several years. Listers may remember that I found valuable information about how John came to emigrate from 'Memoirs of a Highland Gentleman' by Evander McIver. A descendant of John Clark ROSS turned up at the reunion with the original copy of the book sent out to Texas in 1905, complete with newspaper cuttings of the ROSS family that John had pasted inside the cover. There simply wasn't time to look properly at everything that people brought, so photocopiers and scanners are going to be working overtime this week! Rossville was by-passed by the railroad and is now really just a crossroads, but I was able to see the graves of John and William buried there, along with numerous descendants, and several family members who now live elsewhere in the US have already put their own tombstones there, with just the date of death to be filled in, to make sure their relatives know they want to be buried in Rossville!!! Hamilton is not a common name in Sutherland as you have probably already found out. The family below was one of the few and I now wonder if this John Hamilton could be related to your James? I am in contact with two descendants of this family if you feel it is worth pursuing. ANN MURRAY [c1810-5/8/1880] married JOHN HAMILTON [c1786-19/6/1866]. According to Ann's own death certificate, which was signed by her son, James Hamilton, she is the daughter of Robert Murray and Catherine Mackenzie. She married John Hamilton, son of Robert Hamilton and Isabella Sutherland (DC). Ann and John, a farmer, had the following children (HAMILTON) born in Clyne: Robert, born 27 September 1830 East Brora (OPR); Elspat, born 26 February 1833 Dalchalm (OPR); Florina, born 18 December 1834 East Brora (OPR); Isabella, born circa 1834 [married Robert MURRAY - see 6-035]; Catherine, born 10 February 1837 East Brora(OPR); Alexander, born 19 March 1838 East Brora (OPR); Alexander, born 13 July 1840 East Brora [died 15 February 1855 Brora (OPR/DC); Elizabeth (Betsy), born 23 October 1842 Dalchalm [married George Mackay] (OPR/MC); John, born circa 1851 and James, born 8 March 1854 [died 23 April 1908 East Brora, mason, his daughter, Flora Hamilton, signed death certificate] [married Isabella Sutherland] (OPR/DC). In 1841 at East Brora lived John Hamilton, tenant, with his wife Ann and their children Robert, Bell, Florina and Alexander. In the 1861 census we learn that John was now a lotter with a two roomed house. With his wife Ann and their children Ann, Hellen, John and James, they still lived at East Brora. John Hamilton died at East Brora in 1866 from Bronchitis which he suffered from for three weeks. His son, John, signed the death certificate. In 1871 at East Brora Ann was a widow and tenant. Her children Ann, Helen and James were still at home plus two granddaughters, Robina, age 4 and Elizabeth, age 3. Robina is the daughter of Helen. In 1871 and 1881 young Elizabeth was at Achnagarron, Rogart, with her aunt Betty Murray. Ann Murray died from heart disease in Clyne 1880. She was shown as a widow on the death certificate. At one time Clyne was the only parish in Sutherland where Hamiltons were to be found, but some families of that name have lived there for generations. Probably the Hamiltons and the Melvilles of Clyne came North at the opening of the coal pit, for the natives then had no knowledge of mining. It appears the existence of coal in Brora was known as early as 1529. Joseph Macleod in his book "Highland Heroes of the Land Reform Movement" mentions James Hamilton, son of John Hamilton and Ann Murray. This book was written in in 1917 and states that James Hamilton of East Brora, 'a good and true man' had passed away - he actually died in 1908. They then must have made a move to Caithness where all there other children were born. James died in 1851 in Bower. I can find no record of either his birth or his marriage. I've just learnt from an account by my (maternal)Mackenzie grandfather that his grandfather James commanded the militia involved in the evictions of the Duchess of Sutherland's crofters at Culrain. Just down the road was my paternal 3xgt grandfather (Gray) and his Mackenzie wife --- poor crofters who probably had friends in Culrain..... I feel very sad. Sara

Hi, Karen A BIG GOLD STAR! As you will have noticed, FOUR of the 1858 Tongue deaths are in Scullomie. They're not in our immediate family and I hadn't yet looked up their deaths.. So you have added enormously to my knowledge. And No.11, the 4-week baby, MARGARET MACKAY, would have been a sister to Malcolm Newlands' grandmother, Maggie, born 1864. Regards, Mary
Christine, I have a book called Sutherland's County of Oxford Gazetteer and directory 1862-3. It lists all heads of families, schools, businesses temperance orders, and a little report about each place in Oxford County, Ontario of which West and East Zorra were townships. West Zorra is now just Zorra township. The book lists four Caulders as living in West Zorra at that time. They are Donald, James, John and John. All lived on the 8th Concession, either on Lot 18 or Lot 20. Donald and James are listed as plasterers. We actually own a piece of land that was a Caulder farm. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information. Lynn Zorra,ON Canada

Hi Angi, Thanks for the reply, I have the same details so far and think it does link back to Thomas of Northumberland but am curious about the two Hugh Mather's marrying Campbell's. I haven't been able to work out yet if they are the same person and there was a mistake made in the register with the baptism dates and wife's christian names or there were two Hugh's born! Cathy, absolutely only when you have time but if there are any Calders on this list would love the info. One of the daughters of my 3 x great grandparents, Hector Grant and Janet Duff, married a Calder and went to live in Zorra. I have information on them including a wonderful photograph of their tombstone which a member took for me but would love to find out if there kids continued to live in Zorra.
