Lynn - I found it most interesting that you own a piece of land that once belonged to the Calders. James Calder and wife Johanne McKay were my husband's great-uncle and -aunt. They showed up in the Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada, 1881 census and then migrated to Winnipeg where James died in 1882. Johanne stayed there and died in 1928. Do you know any history of the property you now own? I believe that James' father John lived on Lot 18. I know that some of John's children stayed in the Oxford Co. area as they are buried in N. Embro Cemetery and Kintore Cemetery. Perhaps they would have continued to farm on Lots 18 and 20. We are most interested in James and Johanne but would be happy to have information about the rest of the family, too. >From your e-mail address, I am guessing you live in Oxford Co. My husband's grandfather owned the hardware store in Embro, and the building still stands today with his name on the side. Peter - Sorry I don't have any information on the Clearances. I looked for McRaes in the N. Embro Cemetery transcript and found none. Perhaps Lynn will find them in the Oxford Co. publication. What a small world, running into someone named Ross Tulloch. Diane and Lynn, Your Calder information is remarkably familiar to that of my McRaes. Alexander McRae was also born in Parish Creich, abt.1786. He married Annie (Nancy) McKay of Doola in Lairg on Dec 22,1820 and had 4 or 5 children while a tenant at Tulloch between 1822 and 1831, before emigrating to Pictou,NS in abt.1831. Is there anything in your research that might shed any light on Tulloch and the Clearances during this timeframe ? Also are there any McRaes in the Sutherland's county of Oxford publication ? As an interesting aside, I was interviewiing someone yesterday for a job and his name was Tulloch. Turns out his middle name is MacRae ! His family was from Ross-shire. We're going to follow up to determine any connections. Malcolm, I'm very grateful for your correction --- my grandfather's account was obviously inaccurate. He never met his grandfather, and learnt of this episode in his life on a visit in 1909 to Tain and Ardcronie, Kincardine, where his grandfather had a farm on retirement from the army: "Our grandfather [James Mackenzie] was a man of note in his time, and left a good name behind him in the neighbourhood. He is remembered about Ardcronie as a soldier, and his command of the Militia at the evictions of the Duchess of Sutherland's crofters in Culrain, a few miles west [sic] of Ardcronie, was all the service he had [in the Militia]." (He fought at the battle of Vinegar Hill, in Ireland, in his earlier army career.) My grandfather met an old man of 96 who, when asked if he remembered the Adjutant, replied."Aye, well! I shaved him and prepared him for his burial." James died in 1844 aged 74. Could it be that all the ills were even then being heaped on the head of the Countess, and are there any accounts of the evictions at Culrain? I wonder if there are any list members related or connected to General James MURRAY? He was the British force's second in command at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, a 15-minute encounter that delivered North America to the British. A year later, on Sep 8, 1760, Murray was appointed the first Governor General of Canada. Piper Elizabeth Murray, age 12, will play Scotland the Brave for the Queen today during her visit to Winnipeg. General Murray is Elizabeth's 5X great grandfather. Pat Winnipeg Canada

We all find things in our genealogical researching that we do not like but my attitude is always someone had to do it. Oh if only our ancestors could have been perfect - but then would we have liked them as much? I so much want to find more stories about the illicit whisky making and smuggling that was rife in Rogart. Betya my folks were chief whisky makers! Hi, story needs to be a couple of A5 size pages long at least. You can take three or four if you wish. If you have any photographs they can be included by sending them to me. Where a story includes facts that you do not have official sourcing for you can say something like "according to family tradition" etc, etc. Yes, include details of the ship, kids etc. Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com -----Original Message----- From: Margaret and Darren Gaven [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 01 October 2002 15:46 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [SUT] Ref OUR WEB SITE Hi! I still need to submit my story on George Henderson & Betsy Bruce who emigrated from Helmsdale to Canada with their young family in 1871 when the herring disappeared & George lost his hand made shoe customers. Actually, that is pretty well the whole story, although I can add bits. Can you remind me how long it is supposed to be & are we to put in kids names, details of what ship they came over on etc?? Can we mention things we have not had confirmed but have been told many, many times by parents & grandparents (i.e. the ship they were on encountered some sort of difficulty & the passengers all had to cross over a plank to another ship)?? Many thanks. Thanks for that Lynn. I have no way of knowing if the plasterers were 'my' Calders but will try to check. Wouldn't it be fun if the piece of land you now own once belonged to one of my 3 x great aunt's kids? Small world. Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com -----Original Message----- From: Lynn Munro [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 05 October 2002 21:55 To: [email protected] Subject: [SUT] re: Caulders Christine, I have a book called Sutherland's County of Oxford Gazetteer and directory 1862-3. It lists all heads of families, schools, businesses temperance orders, and a little report about each place in Oxford County, Ontario of which West and East Zorra were townships. West Zorra is now just Zorra township. The book lists four Caulders as living in West Zorra at that time. They are Donald, James, John and John. All lived on the 8th Concession, either on Lot 18 or Lot 20. Donald and James are listed as plasterers. We actually own a piece of land that was a Caulder farm. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information. If you can bear with me I have just written a note to a minister friend in Sutherland. Hopefully an answer about your Lewis Rose will come back soon. Maybe some other list member has heard of him - I have not heard his name before. This couple emigrated to Australia aboard the City of Edinburgh in 1837 both aged between 20 - 26. The information I have is that they were both from Sutherland and both baptized by 'Lewis Rose, Minister'. I wondered if anyone on this list might have access to the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticae and would be able to look up which church he would have been at around 1811 - 1817? I would be grateful for any other information anyone might have on this couple.
