Hi Madaline, I personally have no knowledge of this family but there is a little more info. in the Durness OPR that might be of interest to you. The address for the births is Badamhoir/Badavoir, the same as your Calder/Ekels. John's patronymic is macEanmhicean'icannich, which I think is son of John, son of John, son of Angus. The last name is a guess, since I can't think of a Gaelic name that would sound like "annich" (It could be Kenneth) Isobel's patronymic is nin Robmacean'icenich - daughter of Robert, son of John, son of ? Angus? Kenneth? The baptisms I saw were: Catherine Nov 6, 1783; Robert July 29, 1787; and Barbara Feb 7, 1794. Just new to this list and am looking for info on a William MCDONALD who arrived in New Zealand in 1865 on the GLENMARK. I am looking for the family that he came from as we have found 3 possibilities. His Father's name was given as William MCDONALD as well on the first William's Death Certificate. Can anyone out there point us in the right family direction please. Thank you, Joan in NZ.

Hi, folks, If your interests go beyond tracing grt/aunt Aggie in the next street, then check out "The Family and Local History Handbook" at www.genealogical.co.uk It has lists of libraries, history centres, government archives, with info on using many of them. There are feature articles on everything under the sun. It's published every year with info brought up to date and new articles. At £7.99 it must be the bargain of the year! There is a deal on if you buy Editions 5&6 ( the only two available ). And before any one asks, I have no connection with the book except as a very satisfied reader!
Hi again Madaline, I mis-typed the address (again!). I'll try one more time but if I don't get it right, just search under Aberach and I think you should find it. Hi Madaline: Calders were numerous in the Parish of Durness, which is a large parish. They also had at least two aliases; Ekel (or sometimes Eagle) and Donn/Down (presumably after Rob donn , the famous Gaelic poet who was a Calder. Some also used the name of Bain but that is a common alias for several names. There was a Hugh baptised Dec 9, 1770, born to William Ekel, alias Calder, alias Macdholicustan (son of Donald, son of Hugh) in Mussell. There are several children of a Hugh Calder listed under the West Moine Mission Baptisms in the Durness OPR. West Moine is east of the Town of Durness, near Loch Eribol I think. The children are as follows: Isobel - 24 July 1804; Mary - 29 June 1806; Johanna - 12 May 1808; William - 12 Feb 1811; Effie - 12 May 1812. Unlike the entries for Durness proper, the mother's name is not shown, except for Effie where the mother's name is recorded as Marion macKenzie. The place of birth in each case is Badevoir, although the spelling is different in every case. It may be a hamlet or even a farm? The 'Aberach" Mackays descend from Iain Aberach, younger son of Angus Dubh the sixth Chief of MacKay, and half-brother of Neil Vass, the seventh chief. He acted as clan captain, during Neil's absence and was rewarded with the Strathnaver lands. He had numerous descendents, and Margaret Aberach MacKay might be one of them but I don't know this. If you are interested in these Mackays, you may wish to visit www.chebucto.ns.ca/Humanities/FSCNS/Scots_NS/MacKay/Strathnaver.html Ian Ontario, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: Howard Blaxland Sent: Thursday, October 10, 2002 3:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SUT] Calder's I was wondering if any one would have any information about a Hugh Calder born about 1770 and who married Catherine MacKenzie 18 June 1803 Durness, Catherine MacKenzie was the daughter of John MacKenzie and Isobel MacKenzie, he had at least five children before moving to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She married John McKay at Lairg in 1846 with issue: Christina (1847-1925) m. Wlliam McKean 1864 Robert m. Anne Magilton (sic) Marion m. William Fuller William m. Margaret Stephenson Margaret m. Thanks again to Karen, we have this great list of Tongue Parish deaths, 1857 Recently I had super results from a query to the SUT List about my husband's Kildonan people (thanks again, Sheila!) So here's hoping again <vbg>. 1857 deaths Item 11 is Margaret McKAY, single, age 77, Clashbain, Skerray, Tongue. Fa DONALD McKAY, decd. mo JANE [no maiden name given]. Informant DONALD BANNERMAN, neighbour. Clashbain has 1 house now, but in the mid-1800s 2 houses were listed No.1 was the croft house. No 2 was occupied intermittently (probably the first house, abandoned when a better one was built). The family in No.1 Clashbain were a DONALD McKAY 1785-aft.1874 (born "Graimb-more" Farr) and his wife CHIRSTY POLSON 1801-1874 (b. "Aulter-liole" Kildonan , fa John Polson, mo Betty Bannerman). No.2 was occupied in 1851 by Margaret McKAY, laundress (born Farr). Donald McKay, Clashbain, was age 72 in 1857, and I suspect the decd. Margaret was his older sister - or even a younger aunt! But the enumerator listed her as a separate household, alas, so no relationship shown. Does anyone on the Tongue or SUT lists know more about John Polson and Betty Bannerman? Or about "Donald Bannerman, neighbour"? I only have access just now to the 1881 census on CD, there are no Bannermans in Tongue Parish by 81. Glenure also had several illegitimate daughters. Louisa succeeded to the estate of Bighouse on the north coast and is generally known as Mrs Mackay of Bighouse.
