    3. I took some time today to sort out some of the piles of paperwork strewn across our dining room and tried to put it into Families rather than obscure piles. One piece of information I did find is a copy of a copy of a copy ? of a Map Published by John Thompson in Edinburgh 1823 of Sutherland attested by Francis Suther -Factor to the Countess,Major William Clunes,Gabriel Reid Esq. Capt. Donald McKay R.N. for Lord Reay's Country This Map shows Townships? in 1823 and is very difficult to read has anyone got a clear copy? I will try to scan this and then decipher Township? names where practicable but no promises the print is very small the contours very dark Iain Membership Secretary POSH Preserving Our Sutherland Heritage A Resident of Keighley West Yorkshire www.sutherlandheritage.com member's interests in Sutherland http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~suthlist/index.html

    2. Hi seekers, There was a national census taken in 1811, but most of the records were destroyed. However, some survived and an occasional one still turns up.Some Sutherland records strangely enough, survived ( Assynt,Golspie, Farr ) and I have a copy of the the Assynt records. They are a bit frustrating as only the head of the house is named- the rest are lumped together under males, females, etc. It's not easy to work these out as the headings are poorly handwritten. I got them from the Highland Region Archives in Farraline Park, Inverness, Ref. D269 in the book "Guide to the Highland Council Archive". Incidentally, these archives are a goldmine of information from all over the Highlands, from school records to company records, estates to harbour trusts, airfields to archaeology. It's not just Council records- everything is grist to their mill. All kinds of records are deposited for safe keeping. Quick look...Meikle ferry fund committee 1809.....Ness angling club 1849.......Caithness valuation rolls 1878-1974. Tel. 01463 220330 Fax. 01463 711128 Fraser MacKenzie.

    3. Hi Madaline, I was very interested in your e-mail about Catherine Mc KENZIE, as it probably means I have been barking up the wrong tree!! An ancestor of my husband's, Thomas MATHER, born in Northumberland in 1783, moved to Durness and was a shepherd at Balnakeil and Kervaig. As well as several legitimate children, he had an illegitimate daughter Hannah in 1815, who took his name. Hannah MATHER's baptism record in Durness says that she was born in adultery to a Ket McKENZIE. Hannah later married Lachlan ROSS at Eriboll, and the 1851 census lists Lachlan and Hannah and their four children together with 'Catherine McKENZIE, mother-in-law, aged 67, pauper, born Durness'. As I could not find any other, I had rather presumed that the Catherine/Ket McKENZIE who gave birth to Hannah MATHER and was 67 in the spring of 1851 was the same Catherine McKENZIE baptised on 6 November 1783 in Durness to John and Isobel McKENZIE. I would be grateful to have more information on Catherine, as if you are sure she married a Hugh CALDER and moved to Cape Breton then one of us, probably me, is wrong!! 1. RE: [SUT] Melbourne Exhibition Building - James Munro
    2. Lori Fletcher
    3. Hi Lizzi James Munro (1832-1908) born 7 January 1832 in Sutherlandshire Scotland, son of Donald Munro and his wife Georgina nee Mackey. Educated at Armadale village school he was apprenticed in 1848 to the Edinburgh printing house of Constable & Co and soon joined the total abstinence movement. In December 1853 he married Jane Macdonald and in 1858 with his wife and 3 children migrated to Melbourne, arriving 7 November 1858. Munro was described as a rough tyke in his early years. He was quick tempered and authoritarian but always easy to get on with if you let him have his own way. With a strong voice and pronounced accent he was known for his invective when roused and a tendency to dance with rage, habits which endured and must have contrasted with his patriarchal appearance of tall, broad figure, massive head and flowing beard. (this book goes on for quite a bit. Was there anything in particular you wanted to know? He died on 25th February 1908 and was buried in the St Kilda Cemetery beside his wife who had died in 1904. He was survived by 4 sons and 3 daughters of his 8 children. From another book written 1888 The Hon James Munro MLA Melbourne, was born in Sutherlandshire Scotland and was educated at the local school at Armadale village. He left Edinburgh for Victoria in the ship Champion of the Seas in 1858 and first turned his attention to printing but left that work to found and conduct the Victorian Permanent Building Society which he had started in 1865. After 17 years service as secretary, he started (1882) the Federal Banking Company and conducted the operation of the bank as managing director for 3 years and is still a director. The Real Estate Bank, a most successful institution, of which he is the managing director was founded by him in 1887. Mr Munro stood for Parliament in 1863 for Dundas but was unsuccessful. In 1873 he was elected member for North Melbourne and was afterwards representative for Carlton until 1881. In 1882 he was elected for North Melbourne and sat for about 2 years and in 1887 was elected member for Geelong. Having held the position of Minister of Education, Mr Munro is an Executive Councillor for Victoria. During his whole life Mr Munro has taken the warmest interest in the Temperance movement and is the acknowledged leader of the Temperance forces in Parliament. He is President of the Victorian Alliance and the Melbourne Total Abstinence Society and at the present time is Chief Officer of the Rechabite Order, a friendly society on a temperance basis numbering over 12,000 members in Victoria. As one of the executive commissioners for the Exhibition of the 1880-1881 and 1888-1889 Mr Munro has devoted himself with characteristic energy to ensuring their success and has also held a similar position on the Commission for the Philadelphia, Sydney and Paris Exhibitions. Sounds like a fun bloke!!!
