    2. Hi John, If you are really keen and are stuck to find an answer to your query, you could try buying a copy of this book. It's available from second-hand booksellers all over the world, but mostly in USA and UK at prices varying from "that's ok" to "WHAT??? " One for sale in NSW @US$90. Try WWW. ABEBOOKS.COM This is a sort of cooperative web site where secondhand booksellers all over the world lodge their stock. You can search for a book by author or title and up it comes with prices and booksellers. MAGIC! Regards, Fraser MacKenzie.

Malcolm Dundee, Scotland -----Original Message----- From: John McKay [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 17 October 2002 09:52 To: [email protected] Subject: [SUT] Charles Mackay - the poet Lister (& especially Malcolm) Have a faded photostat of some poetry written by Charles Mackay from Blackie & Son "Poets & Poetry of Scotland" complied I think by James Grant Wilson. Seems rather decent stuff. Copy is of pages 380 - 389 (I think) and notes that Charles was born at Perth in 1814 but spent much of his early years in London. Somewhere else in there (I remember reading before it faded) is said that he was a 'minor poet'. Seems he visited the States in 1857 as Dr. giving "lectures which well illustrated his genius". Has anyone got this book and if so, copyright considered, can they help me obtain a reasonable print of Charles' work in this? Sounds like an interesting fellow. Any help? 3. Hi all I know before I bid on this book I should have actually asked what your thoughts on it were then....smile but here is the book....I bought my first ebay buy ever I would like to know what any one's thoughts are on it , if they know of this book..is it a good source book?? etc THE ORIGINAL SCOTS COLONISTS OF EARLY AMERICA 1612-1783 by David Dobson. Published 1990 hard back book with dust jacket. About 150,000 Scots emigrated to America before the Revolutionary War, but the records on them are notoriously hard to find. However, it has been clear for some time that in archives in Scotland and England there is much information on a number of these emigrants. David Dobson has extracted data from a wide variety of sources including family and estate papers, testamentary and probate records, burgh muniments, sasine and deed registers, Sheriff's Court records, Court of Session and High Court of Judiciary records, port books, customs registers, contemporary diaries and journals, contemporary newspapers and magazines, professional and university records, Privy Council and colonial records, records of Episcopalian and Presbyterian churches, monumental inscription lists, and the 1774-75 Register of Emigrants. For each of the 7,000 persons listed, a maximum of twenty-three points of information is provided: name, date of birth or baptism, place of birth, occupation, place of education, cause of banishment (where applicable), residence, parents' names, emigration date and whether voluntarily or involuntarily transported, port of embarkation, destination, name of ship, place and date of arrival, place of settlement, names of spouse and children, date and place of death, where buried, probate record, and source citation. 3. Hello Listers, Anyone out there give me any information about The Biographical Register of the St Andrews Society of New York. Reason being- I have just read a booklet Scottish Soldiers in Colonial America part 3 by David Dobson & it refers to James SUTHERLAND his birth which is correct, his death which isnt, it give his parents as Eric SUTHERLAND & Elizabeth DUNBAR, correct & mentions he was in the 26th Regt[Cameronians] & dates & when he returned home etc. This is different info to that given in a modern book of the SUTHERLANDS which gives different Regt. How accurate is this register & how much information does this register have & how can you access it. Barbara Stirling New Zealand
