Since an Act passed in 1854, masters of British ships have had to compile official log books of births, marriages and deaths of passengers at sea, which up to 1874 were sent to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen in Cardiff. Later, their reports of births and deaths on board ship were periodically passed on to the Registrars General of England and Wales, of Scotland and of Ireland as appropriate. The registers of entries up to about 1890, extracted from these logs, are in PRO classes BT 158, BT 159 and BT 160. These are mostly indexed. >From 1852 until 1890, there was a separate log recording deaths of seamen, the registered entries being in PRO class BT 153, indexed in BT 154 by personal name, and in BT 155 by ship. In 1891 the logs merged, births and deaths of crew and passengers up to 1964 being recorded in BT 334. These registers are indexed to 1960. William Sutherland Fraser was a prominent citizen of Dornoch, and I think his family account for all the local connections to Ceylon and Bermuda. I was fortunate to meet a descendent of his family during the summer. From him I have some family info which I will look out for you if you let me know. Regards, Denise Denise, Sutherland, Scotland

3. Can anyone help with this: Angus GORDON, born around 1816 possibly in Farr, went ot Ontario around 1851 with a wife named Catherine and a daughter. It is possible that Angus is the son of John Gordon and Dorothy Mackay who had a child namd Angus in Farr on 4th March 1816. there is also a record of a Catherine Gordon married an Angus Gordon in Farr on 5th Feb. 1847. We know that when he reached Ontario a census record shows his children as Dorothy born 1851, William John born 1855, Alexander born 1857, Jane born 1862 and Janet date of birth not known. Can anyone confirm that Angus is the son of John Gordon and Dorothy Mackay? Any help appreciated. 3. This connection with Isabella SUTHERLAND and Happy Valley (Australia) is very interesting. Isabella SUTHERLAND and John ANDERSON both lived at an Inn in the Golspie Main Street owned and run by Ann McGLASHAN (1841 and 1851 Census'). Census details put Isobella's year of birth at around 1826. John ANDERSON came to Melbourne in 1853 and from 1860 to 1880 worked at the Old Lucky Woman's Mine at Happy Valley (near Ballarat). He then took up land at Port Campbell, which is close to Camperdown where it appears that Isobella SUTHERLAND and John McKAY ended up. There is too much coincidence to for this Isobella not to be the same person. I have also talked to a number of people on the list about linkages between McGLASHAN, DUNCAN, MUNRO, ROSS, FRASER and ANDERSON and particularly linkages between these people and the Western District of Victoria Australia. I am just so busy at the moment, but will get back to this towards the end of the year. Took her back to NZ and had a family. Descendants have visited Tongue within the past 20 years. I had thought they married in NZ, but yesterday a cousin told me they married in DORNOCH. 3. We have just returned from a visit to Scotland and had the opportunity to visit some of the cemeteries in Sutherland. We were very impressed with the work that has gone on to preserve these cemeteries and we can see the amount of work that was done noteably to Clyne Kirkton. The weather was perfect for the whole week we were in the area, sunshiny days every day. Can you believe that? The only time it was bitterly cold, was the day we chose to go grave hunting, so consequently we didn't find any family stones. But we did manage to visit the Golspie library and a very helpful Stuart McLean found some entries amongst his records. So all was not lost. On a quick visit to the Edinburgh archives we tried to find the Free Church records for Clyne, Sutherland and Caithness, but apparently these records are either still with the respective parish church or have been destroyed. Does anyone have any further knowledge on this? My husband's gt gt grandmother Jemima OMAN was supposed to be born in Caithness, although all the census returns I have say Clyne, Sutherland. We don't have a parish for Caithness so the search would have been difficult. If anyone has Jemima married to John SUTHERLAND, parents William OMAN and Barbara MACKAY on their family tree, I'd be very interested in contacting. 1. [SUT] Canadian Grave markers
2. I'm passing this on, as there are a lot of Canadian links amongst you.....(edward): The free-access Northeastern Ontario Canada Gravemarker Gallery website (link is below signature) has attracted a lot of attention in Canada and for Americans who are subscribed to Canadian Rootsweb mailing lists. This site is ongoing and contains over 45,000 photographs af ALL gravemarkers in ALL cemeteries in Parry Sound and Nipissing Districts [County equivalents]which covers a large area in Northeastern Ontario. Currently, I am working on Renfrew County and Sudbury District and when complete the site will constitute a huge coverage of the inhabited lands in Northeastern Ontario and will continue to be a valuable resource for genealogists. Please visit the site and pass on the URL to any "transplanted Canadians" you may know, whose ancestors came from this area of Canada. Good luck........................Murray Pletsch Northeastern Ontario Canada Gravemarker Gallery http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~murrayp Click here: Northeastern Ontario Canada Gravemarkers Album ( Use blue if you are using AOL as your carrier)
