Does anyone have access to, or know the whereabouts of, 1850s Free Church records for Helmsdale (by then in Kildonan parish, I think) ? I've never been able to find a birth record for John Ross, born in Helmsdale in 1855 or 1854, despite repeated searching in civil registration and the OPR. His parents were William Ross, baker, Bonar Bridge, and Margaret Sutherland, who was originally from Helmsdale. If John's birth was recorded at all, it must have been by the Free Kirk. Free Church records are so important for Highland research after 1843, but tracking them down and getting access to them still seems to be a very haphazard process. Is there, somewhere, an inventory of those that have survived and where they can be found? Are any available online? (As a newcomer to your list - having looked through the window now and again, but only now approaching the fireside - can I just say what a great ceilidh you've got going here. I just had to come in!) List - I am the one who posted the long list of 1855 Marriages - decided to go ahead and join the list, you are a fine group, and I have gotten a good many requests ! I am sorry the recent Post of mine involving the 1893 Deaths for Tongue has no further data, these were from the Index microfilm which has no more data than what was Posted. 1893 was not a year to have the original certificates filmed, only the Index. The DH is leaving for a week's trip, so I can work on these Marriages with much less guilt 8-D Have decided it a good idea to Post the ones requested to the entire list, as there are several duplicates of names requested. Then everyone can benefit, that's the point anyway - to find these folks even if you don't know whom they married, or what parents they had. I'll Post the ones already sent out and continue with the requests on the list. If you aren't looking for these, the subject line will be 1855 Marriages, so you can pass it up if you aren't needing this data. Thanks for allowing these numerous Posts. Dear Carol You wrote - >>>Catherine McIntosh of Inchverry House in Tongue married James MacKay a tailor in 1849. They had a family of four...Murdock @1852, John @1854, Flora @ 1856 married Joseph Munroe, and William @1860. Murdock MacKay married a Christina about 1880 in Tongue, and had a daughter Christina there. This family immigrated to Canada in 1884. The IGI does not give the marriage for Murdock and Christina or the daughter, Christina's birth date. <<< The IGI for Scotland includes mainly the Old Parish Records, i.e. Established Church of Scotland. However, starting in 1843, many families in Tongue joined the Free Church. So their marriages and baptisms were recorded in the Free Church Registers and don't appear in the IGI. The FC Baptismal book covers 1843-1877, and is held at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. I had a look today for your people - To Parents, JAMES MACKAY, tailor, Inchverrie, & CATHERINE MACINTOSH WILLIAM MACKAY, born 30 March 1850, bap. 6 May 1850 (Yes, definitely 1850.) MURDO DONALD MACKAY, born 24 October 1851, bap. 4 November 1851. JOHN MACKAY, born 14 July 1853, bap. 17 July 1853. [name entirely faded], F, born [date faded] July 1856, bap. 13 July 1856 (this will be FLORA) The William I found is definitely in 1850. I searched to the end of the book, and found no other births for this couple. Compulsory registration started in Scotland in 1855, so it will be easy to find the details for Murdo's marriage and his daughter's birth. If you can bear to wait a month, I can do the lookup for you. BTW there are other Macintoshes at Inchverry at the same time, I wonder if they are also part of your family. I recorded these births (there may have been more). To Parents, HUGH MACINTOSH, tenant, Inchverry, & BARBARA MACINTOSH WILLIAMINA & GEORGINA MACINTOSH (twins), born 10 Oct. 1848 bapt. 18 Oct. 1848 GEORGE MACINTOSH, born 4 Mar. 1853, bap. 7 Mar. 1853. Hope this has been helpful. Mary Edinburgh, Scotland www.cmy.org.uk

What a wonderful person - of course there isn't a single McMillan among them, I think they just were "passing through" Sutherland! And methinks Meg will get a shock at the unexpected tidal wave of requests. And Christine, you all are doing a marvellous job on the burial grounds, the website is so easy to navigate. I received the following generous correspondence from a non member of our list. Please feel free to take up this kind offer if you wish. I most certainly will for the Murrays! Many thanks to Meg. Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com -----Original Message----- From: Greenwood [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 29 October 2002 17:19 To: [email protected] Subject: Sutherlandshire Post requested by non-subscriber Admin - I am not a member of this Mailing List, but I am subbed to about 20 others, including many from Scotland. In researching my wily daidfolk, there are occasionally records received for other counties, which is why I am writing. I have received a film for 1855 Marriages in Sutherlandshire, but the COOTE I was looking up turned out to be a COOL. The Index microfilm was almost unreadable, I was hopeful, but it was not the COOTE I had hoped for. What I now have is the film, useless to me for 5 more weeks. If it is entirely possible, could you Post the following for me to the SUTHERLAND List ? It is a list of the names of everyone on this very short film, anyone can eMail me for the details or a JPG file of the scanned image. I note there is no Sutherland website, if there is someone who gathers data for this county, I'll be glad to work with them. Sutherland appears to be small, I don't predict a tidal wave of requests. Many thanks for your advice and assistance - Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma, USA and Admin of the newly formed COOTE and GRALAPP surname Lists. If you think it better for me to Subscribe and Post myself, I will do so and Unsubscribe later. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma, USA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Post : Subject line - 1855 Marriage Register entries-Sutherland [long] I have ordered and received Family History Center film # 103358 which is Sutherland county Marriages for 1855. The film is quite small, but I have it for 5 more weeks, I am not a regular subscriber to this List. What follows are the names occurring in that film, if you wish to know details of any of the Marriages noted, please reply with 1855 SUTHERLAND MARRIAGE REQUEST in the subject line. I can send details by eMail, or scan and send a JPG file [image] of the original documents, there are 2 pages for every marriage. Each Register book had 5 entries which went across each page, beginning on the left and continuting across the seam onto the right hand side. Thus, if you receive a scanned image, you will be receiving details on the marriage you requested and 4 others you are not expecting. Posting the details of the other 4 to this List will add to the data in the Archives and might be the answer to someone's mysteries. Requests need to go to Meg Greenwood at [email protected] This Post will be accessible in the future by searching the Archives of this List. Posting data is a delightful obsession of mine that will hopefully continue for a long time. 1855 was a magic year for BMD details, more was recorded than any other year to date. Here are the categories recorded for each marriage : Surname and given name Sex When born, year, day month, hour Where born, if lodging, state where Name, rank, profession or occupation, age and birthplace of father Name and maiden name, age and birthplace of mother, what number of child this was [first, third, etc] Signature of father, mother or other informant with residence and relationship to newborn When and where birth was registered, and signature of Registrar - Note that these Marriage books were filmed from duplicate registers made entirely by hand by the Registrar or the Assistant Registrar, meaning they do not contain original signatures of informants or parents. Thought this would be of interest to others searching for Bannermans in Kildonan/Loth. Ron Letter to the Editor, Northern Times, 25 October 2002: Sir: Can anyone recall hearing of an oil painting of the late Peggy Vass (nee Bannerman) which is said to have hung in one of the Helmsdale hotels- maybe even the Navidale Hotel? Peggy was an aunt of my own late grandmother, Mrs. Johan Ross, of Burnside, Navidale, Helmsdale. Here parents were John Bannerman and Eliza Murray. Peggy was born in the 1820s and married Alexander Vass, a fisherman of Balintore who, we believe, ran a fishing boat back and fore to Iceland. They made their home in Balintore where they had a family of six- John, Isabella, Thomas, ELiza, Nicholas and Ann. She and her husband died within hours of each other in 1885, when typhoid swept the village. Members of her family used to go up to Helmsdale to lok at this oil painting.Id anyone has any recollections of it would they please get in touch?
