    3. Hello Everybody , I am back finally! I have recently recieved death record of my 3 x's g- grandfather Daniel Sutherland GRANT (a.k.a. Donald) He died 30 December 1869 Boston,Suffolk,MA aged 79 y, 2mos. , 21 d. which calculates his b-date exactly to the date I had recieved awhile back from Christine recorded in church record of Clyne , 9 October 1790. Son of John GRANT or WRIGHT and Janet SUTHERLAND . I had found information posted by another descendant of Daniel S. and Jane C. WASSELL of Lunenburg ,NS which intrigues me and would like very much to investigate accuracy of this information , as no primary source was given in regards to: Daniel (Donald) S. GRANT was inducted in to the British military as ships carpenter and this is how he ended up in NS , going from Halifax to Lunenburg. His family (parents & siblings) remained in Scotland and around the time of the War of 1812 he would have been 22 years of age. How can I find out if this is fact or fiction ? Any help greatly appreciated! Thank -you Andrea

    2. Cathy Wagner
    3. Hi all I visited this place today www.nas.gov.uk and I clicked on Justice of the Peace In there it says that there are records for Sutherlandshire from 1740-1968 It would be various records I am sure....petty theft, maybe even clearances...drummed up charges...to make them clear the land??? It would most certainly cover the Jacobites....It would be interesting to know if any of my ancestors were Jacobites... Is it clear to anyone else....how one can access this if not in Scotland, If I wrote to the address here, would it send me copies of the records?? Or would I have to be specific do you suppose. I have no interest myself in later records....only those from 1740 to about 1850is...only a 110 years...not bad eh.....lol Tell me your thoughts after you read it Cathy

    1. [SUT] ROSS, Lairg, 1780 - ?
    2. Jeni
    3. Hi all I have finally subscribed again after a couple of months away and for those on this list who have seen this before, I apologise, however, I need to repost my interests, in case someone new has any information. I am researching the family of Hugh Ross and Margaret Fraser. According to Hugh's death certificate dated 1867, his parents were Donald Ross and Janet MacKay of Lairg. His widow was Margaret Fraser. I have been able to find no marriage of Hugh to Margaret Fraser yet. I have Hugh and Margaret's children, some of whom emigrated to New Zealand. The others are buried with their parents in Lairg Cemetery. I have a Donald Ross, son of John Ross, this could be Hugh's father although I have no idea, at this stage, who the mother would be. I also have an enigma. Willie Ross, son of Margaret and Hugh, had a photograph signed 'from your sisters Jessie and Barbra'. We have found no sisters, Jessie and Barbra yet. They are not buried with Hugh and Margaret. I hope someone new to this list can help me with this one. I have had help from others on the list in the past. My dream is to connect with someone in the family who stayed in Sutherland, who would know more of the Scottish side of the family. The eldest son, Donald (Donat on Hugh's death certificate) stayed in Scotland, marrying, I believe, Kennethina Dingwall and having three children that I know of. And methinks Meg will get a shock at the unexpected tidal wave of requests. And Christine, you all are doing a marvellous job on the burial grounds, the website is so easy to navigate. 3. This mailing list has come up with so much over the past year or two let’s see if anyone can help with this! As you know we are preparing the new POSH members handbook. It occurs to me that we should have a logo! Any one who has any experience of designing such a thing? Made enquiries about having one designed professionaly but the cost is too high. Thinking along the lines of a clan badge sort of thing with Preserving Our Sutherland Heritage through it. A simple black & white logo which would be distinctive and smart. Any ideas.
