    3. An exciting future for the history of Assynt [NL]Posted on 22/05/2002[PARA]A North group's work on an ambitious six year project has taken another step forward with confirmation of funding from Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise (CASE) and the Community Economic Development Programme (CED). Historic Assynt aims to preserve and promote four of the most important sites in north-west Sutherland, and the funding from CASE and CED worth £5,000 will enable them to appoint a project organiser for the first year.[PARA]Costing in excess of £1,000,000 their intensive programme includes conservation, restoration, access and interpretation work at Ardvreck Castle, Calda House, Inchnadamph Church and the Churchyard and MacLeod Burial Vault.[PARA]The group has appointed Architectural Heritage and Buildings Preservation Trust expert Laura Norris to help take the projects forward. Laura has been working on a voluntary basis for Historic Assynt for many months, and will now be responsible for a variety of tasks including sourcing and controlling funds from project partners, and generally co-ordinating the objectives of the project. [PARA]During the 12 months she will also work closely with members of Historic Assynt in a mentoring role. By the end of the year, it is hoped she will have provided the group with enough hands-on training and experience to enable them to continue with the objectives of the project.[PARA]The group has already secured Heritage Lottery Funding for the development phase of the project, but are awaiting news of a further Stage 2 Lottery application approval, which is expected in December 2002. This will enable them to complete the funding package of £736,000 for the consolidation of Ardvreck Castle and Calda House and the associated car park, landscaping and interpretation. Separate funding packages are being sought for Inchnadamph Church and the MacLeod Vault.[PARA]Commenting on the project, Anna MacConnell, the CED Programme Manager employed by CASE said: "This development phase at Inchnadamph is the end result of at least five years of intensive work by members of Historic Assynt. Key to that whole effort has been the need to convince funders of the value of the project to the culture and heritage of the north.[PARA]"We hope that the initial CED and CASE investment will help unlock much larger amounts of support from organisations. Ultimately the hope is that the Inchnadamph project can be seen as a model of community-led conservation and interpretation work."[PARA]Recognised as being of national importance in the history and archaeology of Scotland, Ardvreck Castle was the former home of the MacLeod's of Assynt, although another less satisfied resident may have been the Marquis of Montrose, as he was imprisoned there in 1650. Calda House and Inchnadamph Church are also very significant, both historically and architecturally, however all three buildings are now in very poor condition.[PARA]Given the spectacular location of Ardvreck Castle, its development, integrated with that of the Inchnadamph sites will do much to enhance work already accomplished to improve the tourism infrastructure in the Assynt area, such as the Assynt Visitor Centre, Knockan Visitor Centre and Assynt Field Centre Looks like they do not need any assistance from POSH. We could do with some from them! 3. [Apologies to our readers who missed the photograph of Iain in full Highland regalia wearing the new POSH tartan. A fault developed in my colour printing system] Part III "But what about the reactions of the grass-roots members? I spoke to one recently-arrived (and clearly anxious to integrate) Pommie in Brisbane who said "Strewth!" she spluttered. "Who does she think she is --- Kylie Minogue?" Closer to home, in a hostelry just off the Chingford Bypass, I found a somewhat battered member of POSH who muttered "Poshpyshe? I'll give you Poshpyshe" --- which I took to be a vote of support for the Society. I am less sure about two members from South Glamorgan who both reacted with the same Welsh word, which was at least as long as the name of that village in Anglesey, but which, despite monetary incentives, they adamantly refused to translate for me --- all I could pick out was the word 'diawl', which the editor's Welsh granny says is extremely rude and means 'devil'. 3. Part IV My attempt to visit the heart of the Posh Spice Empire and suss out their intentions met with a brick wall. However, in a caff just round the corner from their headquarters, I met somebody who claimed to be 'close to the throne' --- "Call me 'the Butler'," he said with a sly wink. Let me stress that it was impossible for me to verify his claim to familiarity with the Powers-that-be, but this is what he told me: "You've caused us a lot of sleepless nights --- the loss of revenue is awesome, our shares have plummeted. Cripes, the editorial boards of New Musical Express and Hello! Magazine have resigned en masse over this business --- and you've even managed to put Him off his game, you must have noticed. On the other hand, we don't want to give you any more free publicity by suing you, know what I mean? Er, perhaps we can come to some arrangement?" It was time to make a hasty exit. End. Postscript: (see Part I) it turns out that Christine Stokes talks like a normal human being when awa frae a' that bloomin heather.

    1. RE-[SUT] Trentham Farm
    2. Christine, The Trentham Hotel is on the A9 at the junction with the Dornoch road (B9168) at the Poles. Trentham Farm is near there on the other road at the junction going down to Knockglass and Skelbo. If you have a copy of the Ordnance Survey map Pathfinder Series NH79/89 you will see it there.
