    3. Can someone refresh my memories of the Scottish birth and death records? For what years have such records been kept? Did they go back to the 17th and 18th centuries? my great-grandmother was Julia Sutherland, descended from William of Sutherland (born before 1700), emigrated to New York area ca 1710. Respectfully, O. Ray Pardo

    3. Sorry, yes, I realise I replied too hastily on that one --- there's enough to fight against without exhausting oneself, and others, fighting windmills! However, I will say that if you have an original MS rather than a photograph, it is easier to see what is just an incidental mark on the paper rather than a deliberate stroke of the pen, and, where there are superimposed corrections, it's easier to see which is the original letter and which the correction. Again, I have an original signature in parts of which only the impression of the pen can be seen since the ink has run out. This three-dimensional information is completely missing in a photograph, making the signature indecipherable to somebody who only has the photo. I have just received from the National Archives of Canada the military record of Benjamin Bell GRAY, the great grandson of Alexander GRAY and Lucy MACKENZIE of Creich: he served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WWI, and was killed in action at Vimy Ridge in April 1917. Lest we forget. Sara

As you probably know after 1843 most of the people in the north changed to the new Free Church and of course they aren't included in the Parish Register, Some Free church registers exist, but I know there are none for Latheron. If they were to keep the originals, they would probably stash them away somewhere and restrict access - in the name of preservation BECAUSE they have digital copies - so the end result would be the same as if they destroyed them. 3. If and when you know of the 2003 broadcast time of this programme, I would be happy to record it on video. If anyone knows of a tame copying facility, I would be happy to send it on, or can try to find something in the Highlands. We have some excellent gaelic programmes on radio and TV. (Although I am better if there are subtitles, so most of the radio goes over my head - like the music though). Recent highlight was a dramatisation of Crowdie and Cream by Findlay J MacDonald - a favoutite of mine. Denise, Sutherland, Scotland

    1. [SUT] Gloomy Memories

    3. Have just read in this month’s Am Bratach that BBC2 Scotland will be showing the documentary early in 2003 which is based on the book “Gloomy Memories”, by Donald Macleod. Donald was the man who became famed for his passionate letters to newspapers denouncing the Clearances and the regime that permitted them. This programme will be filmed in Gaelic with English subtitles. I am writing this hoping that someone who lives in Scotland will think to video it so that we poor people in England (and other places) can see it also! 1. [SUT] ORIGINALS FOR THE BIN!
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. The ABERDEEN & North East SCOTLAND FAMILY HISTORY JOURNAL Nov 2002, the Chairmans report includes the following: "The GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE in EDINBURGH has an ongoing project to digitise the SCOTTISH STATUTORY CERTIFICATES of BIRTH, MARRIAGE and DEATH. We are hearing, from contacts at the registrars offices, that after the digitisation has been completed the ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES held in the REGIONS will be DESTROYED. Yes, I said DESTROYED. The copies of the original certificates held in EDINBURGH will be RETAINED." Thought this might be of general interest to you all. Seems like maybe the fight to keep the original certificates in Sutherland was a waste of time! 1. Re: [SUT] Duncan of The Rogart Milita
    2. L Sutherland
    3. Hello all, I was intrigued to find a Duncan Sutherland, under age 30, listed on the Rogart Milita for 1824 at Highland Hearts. <http://www.highlandhearts.com/rogartmilitia.html> There were only 3 birth registrations for the name Duncan Sutherland in a 40 year period (1780-1820). The Duncan of our family was born to James Sutherland and Catherine Campbell, 1797 in Rogart. He, his wife, mother and uncle are burried at the village cemetery in Earltown, Nova Scotia. The age on the list fits and I would believe him(Duncan) to be from our family. His older brother was William, born in 1795. Duncan Sutherland emigrated in 1831. His brother or cousin, John Sutherland came the same year. I would also like to know the following: 1. Does anyone out there have a connection with this Duncan? 2. Where is\was the residence Dalreavach? 3. Is there any information for the other 3 Sutherlands listed at this residence? A.) Sutherland, Donald, a Tailor by trade, at Dalreavach, above age 30, under age 45, B.) Sutherland, John, Labourer, at Dalreavach, under age 30, (I would like to believe this to be my gggrandfather) C.) Sutherland, William, Shepherd, at Dalreavach, above age 30, under age 45. Donald Lee Sutherland (no known relation to the actor. Darn!) _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. 2. Jenny MacKay
    3. Hi Judy & All How about that! Janetas MacKay is my husband's uncle. I'd had a look at the Roll for other family names and didn't give poor Uncle Jock a thought. I must take a closer look at Alexander Matheson as we were told Bob's father Donald (b.1901) & Janetas came out to Australia with 2 Matheson brothers, but they don't appear on the shipping lists coming into Western Australia. If anyone has a connection with Alexander, I'd be interested in your thoughts. Thanks for that Judy.
