    1. Re: [SUT] Scottish Settlers in Manitoba
    2. Patricia Moreau
    3. The following web site is dedicated to the Presbyterian settlers from Scotland who came to this land. Have a look. www.kildonanpresbyteriancemetery.com Article from Winnipeg Free Press Nov 13 2002 by Colin Fraser Jack and Marion Cooper are doing their part to help preserve Manitoba history at the historic Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery. The couple operate Cooper's Memorial Foundations and Leveling, a cemetery restoration and maintenance company with a resume that includes work in graveyards all over southern Manitoba. Over the spring and summer of this year, the husband and wife team straightened 170 markers and restored 40 others at Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery, which is located east of Main Street on John Black Avenue. The company claims that their concrete-based restoration process of fallen and fractured gravestones is the first of its kind in the province. "Some were discoloured so badly you couldn't see them," says Jack Cooper. "And some were broken up in two or three pieces and partially buried in the ground." He estimates that many had been in that state for more than 50 years. Marion Cooper adds that it is especially satisfying rescuing the broken and buried markers thought lost. These markers bear the names of some of the original Selkirk Settlers; a group of Scottish men, women and children who came to the area hoping to make new lives for themselves. They arrived in 1812, setting foot on the banks of the Red River and eventually became an integral part of the Red River Settlement, a community that grew into the City of Winnipeg and Province of Manitoba. "These are pioneers", she says. Over the last 150 years, Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery has become the final resting place for many of the founders and prominent citizens of this part of the country. It is a living monument to the heritage and history of the area. The Coopers were delighted when the outgoing chairman of the cemetery board, Rev. Richard Gillanders, hired them to help keep these records of the past intact. And for his part, Gillanders is very satisfied with the Coopers' work. Gillanders was unhappy with the dishevelled state of the cemetery and the Coopers are part of a plan to keep it presentable. The cemetery board is trying to raise $100,000 to add to a trust fund to continue in the investment and upkeep of the historic resting place. Most of the broken stones date back to the 1860s and 70s, while some are even older. Time and the elements have taken their toll. Many families either have not been able to take care of the tombstones, lost interest, or the lineage has run out. Gillanders says there are many markers in the cemetery where the next of kin is not known. Prominent early Winnipeg names like Gunn, Sutherland and Bannatyne are examples. But on the other side of the coin, this past summer members of the Ross Clan hired the Coopers to level and restore 15 family stones in the cemetery. "It's something the (Ross) family does across the country and all around the world," says Jack Cooper. "They look after them." The fallen and buried stones are dug up with a shovel and pry bar. The pieces are then transported to the Cooper's shop, grinded, flushed, re-lettered and polished. Next, they are put back together in the original shape and encased in concrete. Finally the restored markers are put back on the original foundation. "We get a lot of satisfaction" says Marion Cooper. "It's nice to see some of th really old stones standing up again." D W Kemp wrote a short book about him (1892) - unlike some, Laurie owned up to his true identity. Malcolm Dundee, Scotland

Sorry, yes, I realise I replied too hastily on that one --- there's enough to fight against without exhausting oneself, and others, fighting windmills! However, I will say that if you have an original MS rather than a photograph, it is easier to see what is just an incidental mark on the paper rather than a deliberate stroke of the pen, and, where there are superimposed corrections, it's easier to see which is the original letter and which the correction. Again, I have an original signature in parts of which only the impression of the pen can be seen since the ink has run out. This three-dimensional information is completely missing in a photograph, making the signature indecipherable to somebody who only has the photo. 1. [SUT] Remembrance

    3. Why don't you post the photos -- some at least -- to the list so that everyone who wants to look at them, can. In my mind it's the most poignant kind of genealogy, especially for those who had family perish in the war and may be the only way they'll ever see the places our soldiers died. JDW

    3. I would hate to think the archives would 'bin' the originals. We all know about computer crashes I'm sure, and as technology is zipping along at an extremely fast pace we may not be able to read these digitised copies on newer computers unless the copies get updated along with the computers. I'm sure most of us remember the single speed CDROMs. Yep, it was only 4 or 5 years ago. What are we up to now? 48+! And you can't read those old CDs anymore. What happens? We 'bin' them!! Food for thought.
