    3. Thanks for the info Christine on our memberships, and I shall happily send my money to Ron. But, as we grow, and we shall - let's get Visa? That way we don't have to write the cheque, get the envelope, stamp, go to the postal box. Just a suggestion that would make life easier - and I am sure increase membership as people do like the easy way.

    3. Denise Many thanks. You have made one gentleman in New Zealand a very happy man. This is the second person this week we have been able to help simply through the generous giving of time from people based in Sutherland. Thanks to you all. For interest most of the other families at Torbreck in the 1841 were related to myself, Mackenzies, Mackays etc. In the 1841 census across the Dornoch and Rogart areas - and possibly across all of Sutherland for all I know - there were very many men missing! It is said locally that they objected to this first 'proper' count of people and the relevant questions so took to the heather for the night! I believe this to be true as in many instances they are all home in 1851! 3. POSH is now over one year old. It has been an exciting time during which we have achieved a great deal. For new comers to the list let me remind you of our airms. Preserving Our Sutherland Heritage is a group of people (mainly from this list) who are dedicated to the preservation of the old burial grounds in Sutherland. Many of those are now becoming very old with some stones fallen or broken. Many more have inscriptions which are becoming virtually impossible to read. All money raised by POSH is used to work with local heritage groups in the clearing, tidying and repair of graveyards. We have had great success with Clyne Kirkton and will continue to support them. We will also be moving into a different burial ground in the spring if all goes well. We are currently photographing every gravestone in the county. A huge task which is being carried out by members and willing local volunteers. We anticipate this task being completed by 2004. We will be compiling books on the gravestones, many with further genealogical detail and many, many photographs. The first of these, St. Andrew's Churchyard, Golspie, is now available in our POSH SHOP. Our web site www.sutherlandheritage.com has become one of the busiest Scottish genealogical sites on the web. Some weeks we are recording up to 800 visitors. Unfortunately this huge number is not resulting in benefits for POSH as most visitors only look at our graveyard inscriptions and then leave. As we have discussed on this list there has to be a benefit to POSH to enable us to continue the good work which we are doing. For this reason, your full committee, both in Britain and overseas, have agreed that from now we will move the inscriptions into our members area. We have now taken the inscriptions down and are busy preparing this new area. There will be many more inscriptions on show when the new area re-opens to members on the 1st January 2003. Our indexes to the inscriptions, POSH SHOP, etc., will remain in the public area. Our web master, Linda Brownridge, is currently working hard preparing everything. I feel sure you will all wish to join me in saying a huge thankyou to Linda who has given up many, many hours to look after our web site. As you all know we have been discussing a subscription rate for future membership of POSH in order that we raise the necessary funds to allow POSH to move forward. At our committee meeting in Edinburgh last weekend the annual rate for 2003 was agreed at £10 Sterling. However, in order to give all our loyal supporters and current members an advantage we also agreed that members of this list can join for the special price of £7.50 Sterling. This price is effective for those who pay before the 31st December 2002 via their local representative. After that date all subscriptions will be £10. So what do you get for your subscription? Membership gives you unlimited access to the graveyard inscription area on our web site, a useful members handbook which will be mailed to you as soon as your cheque is received, 20% discount on all purchases from the POSH SHOP plus the knowledge of knowing that every single penny is used to preserve our heritage. Our handbook contains articles by Malcolm Bangor-Jones, Reverend J Leslie Goskirk, minister of Lairg and Rogart plus many other interesting articles. It has a full list of our members interests plus many tips on researching. A very useful little book which has been financed by advertising from Sutherland companies. Your subscription can be made in your local currency. Please use the link below to convert to your local rate. Please check this on the day you write your cheque. http://www.xe.com/ucc/ Please send your cheque together with your full name and postal address plus your email address to the appropriate person named on our contact sheet at http://www.sutherlandheritage.com/contact.html . If you have any queries please email me on [email protected] or contact any committee member. For our friends in the USA please note that we now accept US dollar cheques sent to Ron Patrick in Canada. Full details on the contact page. Now a couple of pleasant extras!! At this time of year it is always difficult to know what to buy for Christmas gifts. This year what about a subscription to POSH? All our current members may purchase extra memberships at the same special price - £7.50. Think how happy you could make someone with this gift. If you wish to take up this special offer please say it is a gift when sending in your payment and we will enclose a special card with the members handbook. Sara Thomas has purchased and donated to POSH a CD, Cànan nan Gàidheal (The language of the Gael), sung by Catherine-Ann Macphee, CDTRAX 009. As we allocate membership numbers to those who pay subscription before 31st December we will put a ticket in the draw. The draw will be take place on 31st December and the winner will be informed immediately. Please also note that the current passwords which some of you have for our members area are now out of date. We will issue all those who subscribe a new password with their members handbook. May I suggest that you print this email and keep it handy. We look forward to receiving your subscriptions and assure you that as always every penny will be used to Preserve our Sutherland Heritage. 2. Christine Stokes
    3. On Monday this week I plodded my way through the 1910 editions of the Northern Times while in Edinburgh. Found this interesting obituary for a Donald Murray – what is most interesting is the reference to his job as ground officer! 6 Jan 1910 death notice Donald Murray at Poles, Dornoch died 2 Jan. Obituary Mr Donald Murray, farmer, Poles died Sunday last. Mr Murray on retiring from the Duke’s service at Ben Armine a few years ago took the small farm of Poles and the post of ground officer. No man filled this proverbially delicate and sometimes embarrasing position better. He was an elder in the United Free Church. His elder brother was Baillie Murray of Glasgow. He leaves a widow and large family. Buried at Golspie yesterday. Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Thanks to Adair for the inscription from New Zealand. I am now collecting inscriptions for those buried overseas where the gravestone states native of Sutherland or native of Dornoch, etc. Also where it is known that the buried person was born in Sutherland. One day I hope to have a section on our web site for these important stones. If anyone has any of these with photographs if possible please send them to me. Thanks Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com -----Original Message----- From: G L & D A Genge [mailto:genge/[email protected]] Sent: 21 November 2002 08:02 To: [email protected] Subject: {not a subscriber} Gunn grave Good morning listers, We have been going through old travel notebooks extracting and filing information. Erected to the memory of DONALD GUNN, Native of Sutherlandshire, who departed this life at Taieri Lake January 27 1857, aged 27 years. This grave is in the HAMILTONS CEMETERY, high up on the northern end of the Rock and Pillar Range in Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand. In the 1860's, gold was discovered in this area and Hamiltons was a thriving township up until the turn of the 19th century. Now there is nothing there except the gold tailings turned into a big lake (now a water resevoir), some old remnants of domestic gardens, and the cemetery which is surrounded by a magnificent dry stone wall and looks down over the vast Taieri Plain. The graves have been catalogued and the cemetery cleaned up. It was covered with ivy and periwinkle and nettles. We wish now we had written down more of the inscriptions as there were others from Sutherlandshire (we'll go back one day). This GUNN grave we did note and it may be of interest to someone. 3. Hi everyone, Back from our POSH meeting in Edinburgh. Will let you all know the outcome of what was a very good meeting very shortly. In the meantime does anyone have access to the 1841 census in Rogart? Am looking for any reference to the name McRae or Macrae. We know there was one at Torbreck but do not have the details. Grateful for any help. Thanks Christine Northamptonshire, England www.highlandhearts.com www.sutherlandheritage.com --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. I have found three apprentices from Sutherland in the Edinburgh Register of Apprentices 1583-1800: John MacKay/MacKae son of John M., Golspie, 1677 Hector Monro, son of Daniel M. in Sutherland, 1689 James Sutherland, son of William S. in Dornoch, 1644. N.B. These were found by searching for 'Sutherland', so could be others under 'Dornoch', 'Go(l)spie' etc.. For further details, see www.scotsfind.com and register! (Lots of other databases for your lost relatives.) Sara

    3. Hello, As I’ve just joined this list, may I ask if anyone out there has common links with my family listed below: Robert SUTHERLAND married Isabel (Bell) MACINTOSH on 7 Oct 1810 at St. Andrew’s, Golspie. They are both buried in the old kirkyard. Robert was a farm grieve at Dunrobin and at some time possibly lived at Dunbeath. His gravestone gives a date of death 4 Jun 1841 age 50 and his wife’s inscription gives her date of death 10 Dec 1862 aged 71. They had eleven children: John, Catharine, George, Donald, Margaret, Robert, Margaret, Isabel (Bell), Janet, unknown, & Nancy. Isabel married John McKenzie 7 Jan 1848 at Golspie and had 11 children and at least 65 grandchildren. John was an elder in the Free Kirk. There must be some relations out there ! Best wishes to all Phil 18 Nov 2002
