Hi, Edward, Nothing wrong with your memory! There is a long tradition of Orkney ships trading up and down the west coast of Scotland. My father often mentioned them coming into Loch Broom. They were called FLOATING shops ( accent on floating ), possibly to distinguish them from shops that didn't!! In some west highland communities there are families with Orkadian names whose forebears arrived in connection with the floating shops. It's never mentioned in the local histories "down here ", but I believe there is quite a lot of info to be found in Orkney. Must dig sometime. Regards, Fraser MacKenzie, Sutherland.
There are a number of recent messages on the guest book at Highland Hearts (www.highlandhearts.com) which may be of interest to some on this list. Perhaps an opportunity to find a cousin! A descendant of John Sutherland and Christian McBeth is asking where is Balvalaich? Can anyone help? Message number 55. Message number 54 is seeking ROSS from Eddrachillis and message number 49 is a descendant of the Watson family from Golspie. I want to make sure I have at least a reference to books/booklets etc. to do with Sutherland which have been written or edited by people on the list. E.g. Christine, could you remind me of yours? (Sorry to pick on you first!) Sara
I feel sure I speak for us all when I say how sorry we are that this wonderful old man has now passed on. You are very lucky to have had someone like him in the family. He was the gg grandson of John Sutherland and Janet Campbell who emigrated in 1831 from Dornoch to Earltown, Nova Scotia. Colin was a fourth generation woodworker. He served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in World War Two as a piper. Some of his training was at Edinburgh Castle. In Northern Nova Scotia, Colin was well known for his excellent fiddling with the telltale Scottish flavour. Much of our family history survived thanks to his memory. He had many accomplishments, but perhaps his greatest was the saving of several North Nova's lives during the closing days of the war. Colin was modest about this heroic event and the story only came to light during the last year. He always told the family he would live to be eighty eight. And he did just that. No, I am not looking for information but a real live today person who actually lives in or near Sutherland, New South Wales. There is a large Celtic gathering there next summer which would be an ideal place for POSH to be launched on to the local scene but would be better if we had a person. Having said all that it would be interesting to know the background to the place - do you have that? Over the years I have carried out quite a bit of research into this family and now believe that John Sutherland was a son of William Sutherland and his wife Janet Campbell of Rogart. Janet was born in January 1773 at Knockarthur, Rogart, daughter of Alexander Campbell of Knockarthur. There is no way now to prove any of the above. The old Parish Register does not include sufficient detail. I have corresponded with descendants in Canada and feel that the above is as close to the truth as is possible now. Having said that I keep looking! We believe John's mother to be a Janet Campbell. Her sister was Katherine Campbell. Katherine's grave is in Earltown, next to her son Duncan Sutherland who also came out in 1831. The Campbell sisters had two brothers, Donald and Duncan Campbell who both came to Nova Scotia with rather large families. Records for Donald indicate he emigrated from Clyne. While Duncan Campbell had children born in Rogart at Dalbain, Tannachy, Inischemy, and Knockarthur. There is some evidence to suggest that John SUtherland and his cousin Duncan originated in or near Dalreavoch. We have a published book on this matter entitled "Donald Campbell, Duncan Campbell and "Coach" Sutherlands: Sutherlandshire to Pictou County" by Joan Bourque Campbell, published in 1987. Hello again, We visited Sutherland in 1993. Lynn, Sandy, Aimée, and I were the only Sutherlands in Sutherland! Our recollection is that it was named for one of Captain James Cook's crew who died within sight of land. His name was Forbie Sutherland, from the Orkneys I believe. There is a plaque to tell this and information on Captain Cook's having landed. If I am correct, it is claimed that Forbie was the first white person to be interred in Australia. Regarding Visa - this is something we did look into and it will happen in due course. However the cost to POSH of using credit cards is too expensive at this stage. Sorry about this. Hope that trip to the mail box is worthwhile. I have just remembered two stories my grandmother told me as a child which I thought would be of interest, altho' my memory may not be perfect. When she lived in Achmelvich as a child, their local 'supermaket' was a sailing ship that periodically came round the coast to trade (barter I recollect) with the locals. The ship came from Stromness I believe. She said they would trade eggs, chickens, fish, etc for 'luxuries' like tea. Are there any records of this that anyone might know about? Can anyone confirm how accurate this tale might be? A second story I recall, was how the landowner's cart would come round at election time to take the men away to vote, and how they were told who to vote for. Again, any comments or corrections will be most welcome. Regards edward Limpsfield, Surrey
