    1. [SUT] Occupation: Forrester
    2. Michelle Collins
    3. Greetings, all... I have not been able to conquer a brick wall standing in my way, and I am hoping to try a different approach -- researching any records that might exist as a result of my ancestor's occupation. My wall is my ggg-grandfather's family records. He is John GORDON, and his death record in Angus County lists him as being born in Golspie c. 1824-1826. His parents are listed as Donald GORDON and Elizabeth McLEOD. I'm unable to find any record of their marriage or even birth information about John. On John's death certificate, however, Donald was listed as occupation: Forrester. Would there be any records in the Golspie area for anyone who might have worked in the forresting industry? Or would this have been a highly transient kind of work, and perhaps Golspie was just a stop along the way? I have searched all throughout Scotland for the GORDON / MCLEOD connection and for a matching birth record for John to no avail. Any tips or information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Michelle Collins Chicago, IL USA __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sign up now. http://mailplus.yahoo.com

    2. Peter McRae
    3. Hi Peter, Greetings from Canada ! Brrrrr... I have noticed some correspondence recently re your McRaes in Sutherland and especially as it concerns the 1841 census in Torbreck. Glad to hear you seem to be having some success. If you remember I have been researching Alexander McRae, b.abt. 1785 in Parish Creich, married Annie McKay from Doola in Rogart Dec.22, 1820, had several children in Tulloch, near Bonar Bridge, and then emigrated to Pictou County, Nova Scotia abt. 1831. If they followed Scottish naming patterns, Alex's parents were John and Margaret McRae, while Annie's would have been Donald and Margaret (or possibly Jean or Jane) McKay. But unfortunately I have no direct proof of the parents. I'm wondering if anything that you have gleaned recently connects, even remotely, to any of my McRaes ? 3. Thankyou all for responding to my MacDonald query and thankyou Malcom for clearing that up....I think some time ago (billions of years ago when i first signed up..smile) I had been looking at some parish records and they had a lot of alias to them....I inquired as to what they stood for, and yes I remember that it could describe them as a person, or give lineage....etc etc, but some reason it was stuck in my head that the first alias was maiden name of mother.....isnt the first time something wrong got stuck in here.....lol..... Misinterpretation.......is all.... I guess no one has heard of Thomas before tho.....or that Sutherland MacDonald....I am quite curious about him now....have been from get go....but didnt pursue it when even if I could figure him out...I still didnt have the connection to my Margaret.... I am rather out of sorts.....my chair broke....gotta sit on this awful thing my daughter dragged out of her garage......have a kidney infection from H*** first batch of antibiotics didnt work,......now they are wondering if I have some stones.....somewhere..... So if by chance anyone looking for me doesnt hear from me....well it might be because I am not here.....but will email eventually Cant stand....barely walk....agonizing Cathy

    2. Christine Stokes
    3. POSH MEMBERSHIP Have received a good number of subscriptions during the past week but plenty of room for more! POSH is now over one year old. It has been an exciting time during which we have achieved a great deal. For new comers to the list let me remind you of our airms. Preserving Our Sutherland Heritage is a group of people (mainly from this list) who are dedicated to the preservation of the old burial grounds in Sutherland. Many of those are now becoming very old with some stones fallen or broken. Many more have inscriptions which are becoming virtually impossible to read. All money raised by POSH is used to work with local heritage groups in the clearing, tidying and repair of graveyards. We have had great success with Clyne Kirkton and will continue to support them. We will also be moving into a different burial ground in the spring if all goes well. We are currently photographing every gravestone in the county. A huge task which is being carried out by members and willing local volunteers. We anticipate this task being completed by 2004. We will be compiling books on the gravestones, many with further genealogical detail and many, many photographs. The first of these, St. Andrew's Churchyard, Golspie, is now available in our POSH SHOP. Our web site www.sutherlandheritage.com has become one of the busiest Scottish genealogical sites on the web. Some weeks we are recording up to 800 visitors. Unfortunately this huge number is not resulting in benefits for POSH as most visitors only look at our graveyard inscriptions and then leave. As we have discussed on this list there has to be a benefit to POSH to enable us to continue the good work which we are doing. For this reason, your full committee, both in Britain and overseas, have agreed that from now we will move the inscriptions into our members area. We have now taken the inscriptions down and are busy preparing this new area. There will be many more inscriptions on show when the new area re-opens to members on the 1st January 2003. Our indexes to the inscriptions, POSH SHOP, etc., will remain in the public area. Our web master, Linda Brownridge, is currently working hard preparing everything. I feel sure you will all wish to join me in saying a huge thankyou to Linda who has given up many, many hours to look after our web site. As you all know we have been discussing a subscription rate for future membership of POSH in order that we raise the necessary funds to allow POSH to move forward. At our committee meeting in Edinburgh last weekend the annual rate for 2003 was agreed at £10 Sterling. However, in order to give all our loyal supporters and current members an advantage we also agreed that members of this list can join for the special price of £7.50 Sterling. This price is effective for those who pay before the 31st December 2002 via their local representative. After that date all subscriptions will be £10. So what do you get for your subscription? Membership gives you unlimited access to the graveyard inscription area on our web site, a useful members handbook which will be mailed to you as soon as your cheque is received, 20% discount on all purchases from the POSH SHOP plus the knowledge of knowing that every single penny is used to preserve our heritage. Our handbook contains articles by Malcolm Bangor-Jones, Reverend J Leslie Goskirk, minister of Lairg and Rogart plus many other interesting articles. It has a full list of our members interests plus many tips on researching. A very useful little book which has been financed by advertising from Sutherland companies. Your subscription can be made in your local currency. Please use the link below to convert to your local rate. Please check this on the day you write your cheque. http://www.xe.com/ucc/ Please send your cheque together with your full name and postal address plus your email address to the appropriate person named on our contact sheet at http://www.sutherlandheritage.com/contact.html . If you have any queries please email me on [email protected] or contact any committee member. For our friends in the USA please note that we now accept US dollar cheques sent to Ron Patrick in Canada. Full details on the contact page. Now a couple of pleasant extras!! At this time of year it is always difficult to know what to buy for Christmas gifts. This year what about a subscription to POSH? All our current members may purchase extra memberships at the same special price - £7.50. Think how happy you could make someone with this gift. If you wish to take up this special offer please say it is a gift when sending in your payment and we will enclose a special card with the members handbook. Sara Thomas has purchased and donated to POSH a CD, Cànan nan Gàidheal (The language of the Gael), sung by Catherine-Ann Macphee, CDTRAX 009. As we allocate membership numbers to those who pay subscription before 31st December we will put a ticket in the draw. The draw will be take place on 31st December and the winner will be informed immediately. Please also note that the current passwords which some of you have for our members area are now out of date. We will issue all those who subscribe a new password with their members handbook. May I suggest that you print this email and keep it handy. We look forward to receiving your subscriptions and assure you that as always every penny will be used to Preserve our Sutherland Heritage. 3. Hi All Well with the fantastic help of Denise Ferne....I have deducted the father of my Margaret MacDonald. There is only one logical man that could be her father. If anyone is interested in how this deduction was made....just ask and I will be glad to tell you However..now that I have made the connection I would like to know if anyone on the list is related to or knows anything at all of this man Thomas MacDonald of Armdale married to Mary Bain proven children so far Margaret MacDonald (my direct) married John MacDonald Barbara MacDonald born 1775 died 1860 in Armdale And another "probable" is Mary MacDonald born 1783 married Hugh MacKay had at least one son Thomas MacKay died in Brucefield, Ontario, Canada her death record states she is of Armdale, Sutherland, Scotland Now on the list of men in Armdale are some MacDonald's that are alias Bain >From what I believe Malcolm told me some time ago....this would mean that their mother's maiden name was Bain?? Is this correct?? Is there any record of Thomas MacDonald around besides the death records of his children, he is not listed on the list of persons between 18-45 of Farr...this would be because he was already over 45 years of age. The 1811 return has him listed with 4 males in house and 3 females...and himself. If his wife was still alive then the girls are accounted for, but I have four boys here I need to find....smile I notice on the 1819 return that there is one Sutherland MacDonald, would this fellow be a son to Thomas MacDonald?? He doesnt seem to be anywhere else...later. I have one Sutherland MacDonald.....also in Brucefield Ontario where I found Mary MacDonald/MacKay....could this guy be my elusive...Major MacDonald??????? Denise has helped me come a long way with my family, because of her I now have wonderful maps, pictures of the area......even pictures of Pouleriscaig, with wonderful writeups on it as well, which is where my Jane was born. I never dreamt it was as small as it is......but now I have a mind's eye of the place...Thankyou Denise.....you really are my hero!! I anxiously await.....for any answers Cathy
