Hi Christine: Here is what I have: "24 Dec 1813 (rather than 1814) Angus Mackay Mackenzie, farm servant, Knockbreack....Effy Macpherson, Durin" I think the name of the place should be Cnocbreac (speckled hill or perhaps trout hill). Durin, which is shown as Durine on some maps, is virtually part of Durness village. I'm glad you have the confirmation that you were seeking. Just checked the IGI (never thought till now to do a batch number search - much easier) and it is the marriage of Angus MACKAY to Effy McPHERSON; the Mckenzie may be the priest. Hope all this helps someone out. I was pleased that my Ewan McMILLAN's entry was very legible. And there is now no doubt that he is the same Ewan that you fished out for me before from 1811 - father of illigitimate Mary; foxhunter to Mr Dunlop. Many of our members seem to have servers who block their mail when their mail box is full. I believe this mainly happens to those using hotmail, msn, etc. Just recently there has been a considerable number of bouncing messages from the list where the reason given is mail box full. If this sounds like you will you please try, whenever possible, to ensure that your Sutherland list messages can come through. I always feel bad about unsubscribing anybody but when we have bounce after bounce there is little choice. I think Rootsweb have started to do it for me as I give folks too many chances! Many thanks PS The list has gone very quiet the last few days. Perhaps world events? Unfortunately, Dr. Hew Morrison's transcription of the Durness OPR ends in 1814. Therefore, only the first marriage that you have listed is included. His transcription reads as follows: [George Mackay, Macdhohil, servt., Borley ....Margaret Morrison*, alias Nin Eachin, Clashneach. *Mackay is written over Morrison 31 Dec] (in year 1814) "Macdhonil" means son of Donald and "Nin Eachin" means daughter of Hector. My gt gt gt gt grandparents were Robert Gordon married to Barbara Mckay at Farr. Their daughter Johanna (Johan) born in 1800, married George Gunn in 1820, and lived in Camster, Caithness. Robert and Barbara Gordon also had a daughter Barbara Gordon, who never married, but did immigrate to Canada with her niece, Barbara Gunn and her husband Alexander McIntosh of Tongue. I have found no information in the IGI of this family. Any help would be wonderful. Carol ( McIntosh) Small
Hi all My Logan's originate from the Creich parish and I have often wondered whether Donald Logan was an ancestor of mine. There appears to be a limited number of Logan's in the area and the surname appears to be possibly from elsewhere and tranplanted there at some point. I was wondering whether there are more records on Donald Logan (a reader of Gaelic) available. The name Donald appears through a few generations of my family, so maybe a traditional name ? Any thoughts anyone ?? A very interesting account. Although it refers to a time long after my gt gt grandfather Thomas Gray (b.1918)had left Creich, it prompts me to wonder again how and where he is likely to have gained the knowledge to allow him to enter King's College, Aberdeen at the age of thirteen --- he isn't on the roll of Aberdeen Grammar School --- is there a roll for Dornoch Academy?
